Background / History

Jieyin resides in the barren Western Realm with his junior brother, Zhunti. The two Saints hope that the mysterious Saint-Making Opportunity will allow them to attain sainthood and improve the fortunes of the West. Jieyin counsels patience when Zhunti becomes anxious about the opportunity, insisting that they should wait until the proper time 20.

When the Immortal Court seeks their support, Jieyin and Zhunti join East King Duke’s faction. Their motives remain unclear, but other powerful figures suspect that the two Western cultivators are borrowing the Immortal Court’s influence for their own purposes rather than submitting sincerely 22. Jieyin later expands a golden ring across all Thirteen Prefectures of Zifu, triggering a devastating clash with East King Duke and allowing the Western pair to claim three prefectures 24.

As the Purple Mansion Immortal Court collapses, Jieyin chooses not to defend it. He concludes that its Destiny has run its course and instead removes the Western faction’s presence from the three prefectures, anticipating the rise of the Demon Race 86.

Jieyin and Zhunti eventually attain sainthood through merit. Their achievement is powerful but imperfect: unlike the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa, they owe the Heavenly Dao an immense amount of merit, earning them the derisive description “Huabei Saints” 113.

The two Saints later participate in several attempts to expand Western influence. They join Yuanshi in seeking control of the Underworld, but the plan fails because of Qin Mu and Empress Pingxin’s intervention 177 411. Jieyin also supports the Western Teachings’ attempt to create Yan, a Human Race rival to Xuanyuan. Yan’s rise divides the Human Race’s Destiny, giving the Western Teachings a temporary share of its fortune 432 433.

Jieyin is more cautious than Zhunti when dealing with Qin Mu. He initially rejects Yuanshi’s proposal to join forces against Qin Mu, judging Qin Mu’s strength and connections too dangerous. He later changes course when the Western Teachings secure Haotian’s support for establishing a Western Heavenly Court. Jieyin then allies with Yuanshi to undermine Qin Mu’s Heavenly Court and spread Western doctrine in the East 587 593 594.

During the Peach Mountain conflict, Jieyin and Zhunti send Saint incarnations to aid Haotian. Their intervention overwhelms the battlefield until Qin Mu defeats the opposing forces and kills Yuanshi. Jieyin and Zhunti lose their dignity, beg Qin Mu for mercy, and are sent away rather than killed 762 776.

After Qin Mu and Haotian destroy the Western Teachings’ foundation, Jieyin and Zhunti lose their Western Dao Field, Fortune, and much of their Saintly foundation. They initially plan to seek refuge with the Dark Night Monarch, but a hidden Buddhist radiance beneath Mount Sumeru changes their plans 879.

The ancient stone gate beneath Mount Sumeru drains most of Jieyin’s Saint Blood before opening. Beyond it lies a Buddhist universe from a previous epoch, containing relics, supreme Dharma artifacts, and the remains of an ancient Buddha whose chest holds a thirty-six-colored Epoch Buddha Embryo 880 881. Jieyin and Zhunti conceal the existence of the Chaos Ancient Buddha when they later meet the Dark Night Monarch, describing their gains only as remnants of Buddhist origin 889.

By Chapter 890, Jieyin and Zhunti are secretly planning to harvest Quintessential Blood from powerful members of the Sect of Interception, especially Duobao Daoist and Zhao Gongming, in order to stabilize their new power and restore the ancient Buddhist ancestor 890.

Jieyin is depicted as an aged Buddhist cultivator with a worn, suffering-looking face. After attaining sainthood, his body becomes a glass-like golden form surrounded by Buddhist radiance and merit wheels 113.

He is deeply concerned with the Western Teachings’ Fortune and the prosperity of the Western Realm. His decisions are usually shaped by long-term political and strategic considerations rather than loyalty to another faction. He refuses Yuanshi’s first proposal to eliminate Qin Mu because he recognizes the danger of underestimating him 587.

Jieyin is also willing to use deception. When the Dark Night Monarch questions the source of his sudden advancement, Jieyin offers a carefully misleading explanation that conceals the Chaos Ancient Buddha and the true nature of the ancient treasury 889.

His caution coexists with considerable ambition. Once the ancient Buddhist treasury appears, his despair gives way to greed and excitement as he rushes with Zhunti toward the Epoch Buddha Embryo 881.
