Background / History

Hongjun presided over the Zixiao Palace sermons as the Primordial World's sole Heavenly Dao Saint. He kept Xuanyuan, Dijun, and Donghuang Taiyi behind after a sermon, using silence and status to intimidate them; he later arranged an exchange to recover the Chaos Bell and River Diagram and Luo Book for the Demon Clan. 15 16

As spokesperson for the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun covertly sought to preserve the balance between the Witch and Demon Clans so they could exhaust one another during the planned Witch-Demon Tribulation. He watched the Fragmented Spirit of the Chaos Demon God of Destruction threaten the Witch Clan without acting immediately, intending for it to deplete their strength. 28 He subsequently selected East Duke—whom he considered controllable—as the foremost male immortal and prospective ruler of the Primordial World. 39

His conflict with Xuanyuan escalated when Xuanyuan demanded the Thirty-Six-Petaled Creation Green Lotus. Hongjun refused on grounds of destiny, offered treasures from Treasure Distribution Cliff as compensation, and ultimately decided Xuanyuan should be eliminated after seeing his immense Great Dao Merit. 54 55 A later burst of golden power associated with Xuanyuan frightened Hongjun into abruptly withdrawing to Zixiao Palace. 56

Hongjun distributed six strands of Primordial Violet Qi to Sanqing, Nuwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti, while disregarding Xuanyuan; he then opened Treasure Distribution Cliff for cultivators to claim Innate Spiritual Treasures. 91 94 When Houtu's Evil Corpse established reincarnation, Hongjun attacked her directly. Xuanyuan injured him with the Sixth Form of Sky Splitting, forcing his retreat. 101

During the struggle between the Heavenly Dao and newly awakened Earthly Dao, Hongjun appeared as “Heavenly Dao Hongjun,” an incomplete fusion-puppet controlled by the Heavenly Dao itself. The Zixiao Palace sermons were later characterized as part of a scheme binding many listeners' destinies to Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao. 103 104

Hongjun attempted to confine Fuxi within Fire Cloud Cave to suppress Human Race destiny, but Xuanyuan, Nuwa, Houtu, and others opposed him. He framed this defiance as betrayal by someone who had attended his teachings. 130 He also plotted against Xuanyuan with Kunpeng and used the apparent murders of Haotian and Yaochi to create fear and confusion across the Primordial World. 143 144

After merging with the Dao, Hongjun arrogantly ordered Destiny Demon God and Old Ancestor Yang Mei out of the Primordial World. Destiny easily broke his Heavenly Dao defense, humiliating him and exposing the gap between their power. 168 169 Hongjun later clashed with Demon Ancestor Luohu, creating a spatial rift that released Chaos energy into the Primordial World. 195

In pursuit of freedom from Heavenly Dao constraints and the Fragment of the Jade Disc of Creation, Hongjun agreed to cooperate with the Dark Demon, adding the condition that Xuanyuan be killed. 196 His collusion with the Dark Domain was eventually exposed; although he trapped Xuanyuan with the aid of a white-haired woman, Xuanyuan escaped and the Dark Domain forces fled. Hongjun withdrew rather than risk a battle against Xuanyuan's allies. 256 259 260

Hongjun later formed an uneasy agreement with Xuanyuan, who offered Primordial Violet Qi and claimed he could help Hongjun fully control the Heavenly Dao. 294 Hongjun exploited the external threats facing the Primordial World to force acceptance of Haotian and Yaochi as Heavenly Court rulers, threatening to obstruct the remaining Saint positions if opposed. 300 After suffering Heavenly Dao backlash, he reluctantly accepted Xuanyuan's help, only to regain the complete Heavenly Dao and merge with it after its consciousness was erased. 311 321 322

A later account attributes the Heavenly Dao faction's betrayal of the Human Dao and Earthly Dao during invasions by the Chaos Demon Gods and Mount Sumeru Realm to Hongjun's leadership. Nuwa was forced to seal herself, while the Witch Clan was believed annihilated. 461 Hongjun continued maneuvering around the Heavenly Court and Investiture of the Gods, including attempting to place Haotian beside Xuanyuan and being compelled to sign the Investiture of the Gods alongside his disciples. 496 497 501

Hongjun is depicted in more than one form, ranging from an aged Dao Ancestor to a younger, Heavenly Dao-controlled manifestation. 56 103

Hongjun is calculating, patient, and intensely focused on control. He selected East Duke specifically because he believed a powerful but foolish ruler would be easier to manipulate, and he treated the Witch-Demon conflict as a mechanism for weakening both sides. 28 39

He publicly presents himself as a dignified Dao Ancestor concerned with the Primordial World's stability, repeatedly invoking the Heavenly Dao and Xuanmen unity. 56 300 Privately, he is willing to manipulate disciples, exploit calamities, bargain with hostile forces, and collude with the Dark Domain to secure power or remove Xuanyuan. 143 196 256

His confidence often turns into arrogance after gaining Heavenly Dao authority. He openly demeaned Yang Mei and Destiny before being defeated by the latter, at which point his composure gave way to fear and desperation. 168 169 Despite his ruthlessness, he shows concern for Haotian, Yaochi, and Kunpeng, particularly when their safety or future service is threatened. 143 501
