Background / History
Tian Boguang was a notorious, unaffiliated flower thief whose crimes had made him a target throughout the Jianghu. He was described as exceptionally slippery, having traveled widely and harmed victims across many regions; even other demonic-cult figures reportedly looked down on flower-picking thieves like him 34.
At Huiyan Tower in Hengyang, Tian Boguang held the young nun Yilin hostage. He dismissed Wang Jingyuan after the latter claimed his martial arts were too weak to challenge him, then easily defeated Mount Tai Sect disciple Chi Baicheng and overwhelmed Daoist Tiansong while remaining seated 31.
Wang Jingyuan and Linghu Chong manipulated Tian Boguang into a drinking contest. Wang secretly mixed aphrodisiac into Tian Boguang's wine, then led him to Qunyu Garden, where the compounded drug, alcohol, and exertion exhausted his Internal Energy and left him critically weakened 31 32.
After Tian Boguang was incapacitated, Wang Jingyuan severed his tendons and sinews with Bixie Swordplay, shattered his dantian, and ultimately killed him with Zixia Divine Skill despite Linghu Chong's request for mercy 33. Wang later looted Tian Boguang's manuals, while his preserved head was retrieved from a butcher shop 36 50.
Appearance
Tian Boguang was a lecherous-looking man who carried a saber and projected the confidence of an experienced Jianghu outlaw 31.
- Often appeared with a saber at his side 31
- His eyes became bloodshot after the aphrodisiac took effect 31
- Following his exhaustion, his gaze was described as calm and detached from worldly desire 32
Personality
Tian Boguang was brazen, lust-driven, and contemptuous of those he considered cowardly or weak. He openly acknowledged his identity and initially regarded Wang Jingyuan as unworthy of sharing his table 31.
Despite his arrogance, he could recognize exceptional skill. After Wang Jingyuan used Bixie Swordplay to chop a pork bone without harming his own palm, Tian Boguang conceded the contest and admitted that Wang's swordsmanship was rare 31.
When stripped of his strength and facing death, Tian Boguang became unusually candid. He acknowledged that his apparent enlightenment was temporary and that, if he recovered, he would return to his former habits 32 33.
Abilities & Skills
Saber Combat
Tian Boguang possessed formidable saber skill, enough to defeat or threaten orthodox sect disciples and elders.
- Casually defeated Chi Baicheng with a single flash of saber light 31
- Blocked twenty to thirty of Daoist Tiansong's sword strikes while seated 31
- Cut Wang Jingyuan's palm with a saber strike, though Wang's technique prevented serious injury 31
Lightness Skill
Tian Boguang's movement skill was considered exceptional.
- Dragged Wang Jingyuan into Qunyu Garden using his “peerless” lightness skill 31
- His ability to evade and travel contributed to the difficulty of locating victims of his crimes 34
Martial Arts Manuals
Tian Boguang carried four manuals on his person, apparently originating from the same school.
- Gale Saber Technique — one of two saber manuals found on his corpse 36 40
- Flying Sand and Rolling Stones Thirty-Six Forms — saber technique manual 40
- Positive Step Three Layer Cloud — movement technique manual 40
- Reverse Step Three Layer Cloud — movement technique manual 40
- The manuals required strong desire to cultivate and appeared designed to perpetuate Tian Boguang's corruptive path in subsequent users 36
Relationships
- Yilin — Held her hostage at Huiyan Tower; she was rescued through Wang Jingyuan and Linghu Chong's scheme. Despite his actions, Yilin later showed concern for his condition 31 32.
- Wang Jingyuan — Captured and incapacitated Tian Boguang through deception, aphrodisiac, and martial arts before killing him 31 33.
- Linghu Chong — Drank and dueled with Tian Boguang during the rescue of Yilin; later attempted to persuade Wang Jingyuan to spare him 31 33.
- Chi Baicheng — Nearly killed by Tian Boguang before Wang Jingyuan intervened 31.
- Daoist Tiansong — Fought Tian Boguang at Huiyan Tower and was defeated and wounded 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Huiyan Tower Incident
Tian Boguang's capture of Yilin triggered the confrontation at Huiyan Tower. His overwhelming martial ability established him as a threat beyond Wang Jingyuan's ability to defeat directly in open combat 31.
Qunyu Garden Downfall
Wang Jingyuan exploited Tian Boguang's lust by drugging him with aphrodisiac and arranging for him to exhaust himself at Qunyu Garden. The scheme drained his Internal Energy and reduced him to a helpless state 31 32.
Death and Aftermath
Wang Jingyuan crippled Tian Boguang, then used Zixia Divine Skill to kill him. His corpse yielded four manuals, and his head was later preserved by a butcher with poisonous salt and curing agents 33 36 50.
