Background / History

The Shadow Clan civilization is located roughly one thousand light-years from the Solar System and was the first extraterrestrial civilization to invade Blue Star. After Blue Star's coordinates were leaked, spatial rifts began appearing worldwide and releasing Shadow Clan members to slaughter humans. Such rifts generally remain for about half a month before disappearing naturally. 67

Their incursions are known as Shadow Calamities. A Starry Sky Passage cannot be sealed once it forms; defenders must instead contain the emerging Shadow Clan until the passage disappears. 73 Blue Star has fought them for hundreds of years, with established early-warning systems providing at least one hour of notice before a calamity erupts. 335

The Hidden Spirit Organization worships the Shadow Clan and assimilates humans in exchange for Shadow Clan-derived power. Its members can infect others, use a Shadow Clan biological network for encrypted communication, and undergo rituals such as shell-snatching to alter their bodies and consciousness. 32 126 333

Later revelations identify the Cangxu Civilization as the force orchestrating the prolonged conflict, including redirecting Starry Sky Passages between civilizations. The Shadow Clan's near-immortality makes them an especially effective weapon against lower-tier civilizations. 405

Known Forms and Threat Levels

Form Physical indicators Documented threat level
Infant Body Usually 1.5–2 meters tall; taller individuals are generally stronger within this stage. 15 36 Even the weakest Infant Bodies require a coordinated team of students to defeat. 15
Strong Infant Body Around 2 meters tall. 35 36 Can overwhelm multiple fighters; its roar can significantly disrupt Martial Will. 35
Juvenile Body Begins at roughly 3 meters; documented examples range from five to six meters. 15 123 Normally requires First Break Martial Artists or stronger; exceptionally large examples can challenge Second or Third Break combatants. 15 104
Young Body Can exceed 10 meters in height. 191 Comparable to early- through late-stage Second Break Martial Artists. 190 210
Adult Body Usually returns to approximately human size. 36 No specific combat benchmark is documented.
High-level members Seven Breaks and above possess a degree of true physical-body nature. 425 Nine Breaks members can speak, use profound Divine Abilities, and possess human-like intelligence. 423
Demigod-level members Produced or supported by a Mother Nest. 428 A single Mother Nest can summon up to three Demigod-level Shadow Clan members. 428

Appearance

Shadow Clan members usually manifest as pitch-black, liquid-like humanoid phantoms that condense out of shadows. They may grow from small Infant Bodies into towering giant forms before eventually shrinking again at the Adult stage. 15 36

  • Their bodies are dark, shadow-like, and can dissolve completely after death. 74 334
  • Wounds release black blood, but even throat injuries do not immediately stop them from fighting. 73
  • They can merge into environmental shadows, making direct visual tracking difficult. 15 16
  • Stronger members may possess enough intelligence to speak human language. 423

Abilities & Traits

Shadow Traversal

Shadow Clan members can enter and travel through shadows, allowing them to disappear during combat and strike from a target's blind spot. Infant Bodies can rapidly teleport through nearby shadows, while stronger members gain dramatic speed boosts by merging with them. 15 16 191

  • They frequently target a victim's shadow from behind. 15
  • Their mobility increases in darkness; three Juvenile Bodies were faster at night than during daytime. 123
  • Their shadow-based movement enables sudden, near-supersonic attacks from large Young Bodies. 191

Mind-Affecting Roar

Their roars interfere with the mind, causing dizziness, ringing ears, fear, impaired concentration, and even illusions. 16 104 334

  • Multiple simultaneous roars can incapacitate ordinary people outright. 73
  • A solid Martial Will can resist weaker roars, though powerful Juvenile Bodies can still destabilize experienced fighters. 35 104
  • Shadow Clan sounds also function as a means of communication and can carry decipherable messages. 334

Extreme Vitality

Shadow Clan members possess unusually tenacious life force. Conventional injuries that would incapacitate humans may not stop them, and their bodies dissolve into shadow after death. 73 74

  • Ordinary blades, spears, firearms, and similar weapons struggle to inflict meaningful damage. 16
  • Human fists can harm them because the human body produces a peculiar magnetic field that deters supernatural entities. 16
  • Starry Sky Martial Artists can ignite this field with Star Energy and wield specialized weapons that are much more lethal against the Shadow Clan. 16 59
  • Star Weapons infused with Star Energy can rapidly destroy their bodies despite their resilience. 73

Mother Nest Resurrection

Most Shadow Clan members are avatars formed from a Mother Nest's consciousness rather than independent physical beings. When killed, they return to the nest, which can generate replacement copies. 334 425

  • The Mother Nest is the core of a Shadow Clan lair and continuously produces new members. 334
  • A black cocoon-like nest can emit black energy that causes slain members to re-form almost instantly. 423
  • The Mother Nest itself possesses consciousness; the members it produces are described as puppets or avatars under its control. 425
  • Members at Seven Breaks and above have some true physical-body nature, making their revival more costly for the nest. 425
  • Destroying the Mother Nest is the only documented way to permanently eliminate the Shadow Clan of a lair. 405 423

Relationships

  • Blue Star civilization — Invading enemy responsible for recurring Shadow Calamities; Starry Sky Martial Artists and the Shadow Hunter Bureau fight to contain them. 67 120
  • Hidden Spirit Organization — Human worshippers and collaborators who gain Shadow Clan traits through assimilation and shell-snatching rituals. 32 58 126
  • Cangxu Civilization — Identified as the larger power using the Shadow Clan to instigate inter-civilization wars and weaken lower-tier civilizations. 405
  • Jiang Ye — Major opponent and a named target of the Shadow Clan; he entered their lair, slaughtered high-level members, and destroyed the Tenth Shadow Clan Nest with the Li Family Demigod. 334 423 425 426
  • Zhou Huaifeng — The Zhou Family Demigod secretly colluded with a Mother Nest and attempted to deliver Jiang Ye to it. 423 426

  • Their fearsome voices are described as a terror seemingly ingrained in humanity, capable of paralyzing untrained civilians with fear. 119
  • One Mother Nest Core recovered by Jiang Ye retains enough authority to produce Shadow Clan members obedient to him. 428
