Background / History
Klein worked at Blackthorn Security Company in Tingen alongside Luther, Leonard, and the other Night Watchers. During this period, he guided Luther toward the Acting Method, explaining that acting in accordance with a potion’s name improves compatibility and lessens its influence. He also led Luther through an underground occult market and publicly credited him with preventing Old Neil from becoming an irreversible monster. 35 36
As The Fool, Klein presides over The Tarot Club from above the Gray Fog. His concern over Luther’s pathway and connection to the Aurora Society prompted him to seek information about the organization from Audrey and Alger. 40
After both had apparently died and later returned, Klein and Luther recognized one another beneath Backlund Bridge. They confirmed that both were transmigrators, exchanged their respective circumstances, and resumed cooperating despite mutual caution. 170 172
Operating in Backlund as detective Sherlock Moriarty, Klein investigated Rian Thomas’s disappearance and traced the case to Lanerius. He and Luther pursued Lanerius together; after Luther killed him, Klein fought Leonard, seized Lanerius’s Extraordinary Item, and used Tarot cards to interfere with later divination of the scene. 232 233 243
Luther later identified Klein as The World within The Tarot Club. Klein admitted the identity but kept his connection to The Fool concealed, fearing the exposure of his final disguise. 409 He subsequently adopted Gehrman Sparrow, a cold-blooded adventurer persona, while preparing to leave Backlund for advancement at sea. 401
Appearance
Klein’s appearance varies extensively according to the identity he is performing. After becoming a Faceless, he can alter his features almost perfectly, though he cannot create additional flesh or change his height. 366
- As Sherlock Moriarty, he wears a beard and gold-rimmed glasses. 192 233
- As a Magician, he uses white face paint, exaggerated black stars around his eyes, flamboyant clothing, and Tarot cards. 243
- As Gehrman Sparrow, he presents a cold, gaunt face, black woolen overcoat, silk hat, hidden holster, and a human-skin glove. 401
- His Faceless ability lets him imitate a target’s appearance, habits, gestures, and speech patterns for more convincing impersonation. 366 522
Personality
Klein is cautious and analytical, especially when confronted with dangerous mysteries. When he received a letter apparently written by another transmigrator, he restrained his excitement, considered the possibility of a trap, and chose to open it through a sacrifice above the Gray Fog rather than directly. 168
He is highly conscious of performance and secrecy. Klein maintains distinct personas for The Fool, The World, Sherlock Moriarty, and Gehrman Sparrow, and can preserve his composure even when conversations threaten to expose him. 254 409
Despite this guardedness, he is protective of allies. He agrees to help Allen find the missing Rian Thomas, sends Allen away when the investigation becomes too dangerous, and feels responsible when Luther’s mental condition deteriorates after the Lanerius operation. 232 233 244
