"How could this happen?"
Corlys struggled to keep his footing in the wind, staring fixedly at the pale dragon.
Its appearance was unmistakable.
But its slit pupils had turned icy blue, its scales were pale as snow, one of its horns was broken, and its wing membranes were damaged in several places.
It looked like a grievously wounded dragon that had survived a great battle.
"Siga!"
The pale dragon threw back its head and roared. Its jaws split open unnaturally, revealing a shattered jawbone.
The Night King raised his head high, proudly soaring on his dragon.
He flew toward the impassable Wall and raised the ice spear in his hand.
Boom!
A silent cry suddenly echoed across the air, and the army of wights answered with howls.
The pale dragon dived, frost-white dragonflame gathering deep in its throat.
The Night's Watch gaped at the sight, nearly scared out of their wits.
Everyone realized one crucial thing.
The White Walkers, who couldn't cross the Wall, now had the power to fly over it.
"We have to stop it, Melyas."
Resolve filled Rhaenys's eyes as she quickly climbed onto the dragon's back.
Melyas was already prepared. Once his rider had fastened the saddle straps, he beat his wings and took to the sky.
"Dragonflame!"
Rhaenys glanced back at her husband and gave the order without hesitation.
"Siga!!"
Melyas was as swift as lightning. He shot toward the pale dragon and unleashed a vast torrent of scarlet dragonflame.
Standing atop the battlements, Corlys watched in shock as his wife rode into battle.
Before mounting her dragon, she had told him what she intended to do.
"We can't retreat, not even one step, Corlys."
Those had been his wife's exact words. She was determined to keep the White Walkers out.
Corlys's face went numb.
