Background and History

The Nine Mountain Sect is an ancient lineage whose Sect Master inauguration describes it as continuing a ten-thousand-year Dao lineage. Its traditional identity was built around Talisman Methods, lightning cultivation, and talisman arrays. The Sect Master was especially accomplished with killing arrays, while the Divine Firmament Imperial Thunder True Method enabled cultivators to safely combine lightning techniques with talismans and arrays. 85 124 194

Its inherited Spirit Mountain Method contained a fundamental flaw: it relied on a connection between cultivator, spirit vein, runes, and the Nine Mountains that ordinary practitioners could not replicate. Zheng Fa concluded that cultivation methods created by the Nine Mountain Ancestor were therefore traps for normal disciples. 124

Great Freedom Demonic Cult crisis

The sect became a target of the Great Freedom Demonic Cult after Zheng Fa’s actions around the cult’s secret realm. Its disciples guarded the Thunder Pool and blocked the secret-realm entrance despite being heavily outmatched, while Zheng Fa used a Thunder Fire Talisman to defeat two Golden Core cultivators and drive enemy disciples back inside. 182 183

As threats escalated to Nascent Soul level, Zhang Wuyi attempted to awaken the Nine Mountain Ancestor and suffered grave injuries. The sect ultimately chose to move entirely into the Nine Mountain Realm, abandoning direct participation in the disputes of the Xuanwei Realm after the Hundred Immortal Alliance failed to provide meaningful support. 248 258 261

The relocation included dismissed disciples, their families, and mortals formerly protected by the sect. During the evacuation, its forces protected a migration of roughly 300,000 people from the Great Freedom Demonic Cult. 261 270 271

Zheng Fa’s leadership

Zheng Fa formally became Sect Master after receiving the Golden Thread Dao Robe and Nine Mountain Token. The Nine Mountain Ancestor approved his succession, and the sect’s Nascent Soul cultivators, disciples, and resident mortals acknowledged his authority. 283

Under Zheng Fa, the sect shifted from a conventionally organized cultivation sect into a research-driven society. It expanded education, cultivation research, agricultural development, manufacturing, public communications, and merit-based promotion while treating basic theory as more fundamental than inherited secret arts. 262 267 283 291

Rise to a Six Sects power

After the Great Freedom Demonic Cult crisis, the sect emerged as a major force despite its comparatively weak foundation. It participated in the Six Sects Covenant, received substantial territory, and became recognized alongside the five oldest and strongest sects in Xuanwei. Zheng Fa and Zhang Wuyi nevertheless considered the sect “bloated”: its territory and reputation exceeded its available population and high-level cultivator base. 389 393 394

The sect later resisted Haori Mountain’s efforts to divide the Hundred Immortal Alliance, defeated its forces, occupied and rebuilt parts of its territory, and inherited substantial portions of Haori Mountain’s artifact-refining legacy and stored resources. 423 507 562 599
