History

Heaven Tablet Realm

The realm was originally known as the Heaven Tablet Realm. When the Nine Mountain Sect entered it through a portal, the Heavenly Palace was already fragmented, though former Immortal residences remained available for settlement 257.

Zheng Fa renamed it the Nine Mountain Realm after Senior Sister Yuan's suggestion. At the time, its rules were incomplete: only lightning-based spells and talismans functioned because the Sun Moon Bell's spiritual-energy circuits contained no other corresponding rune diagrams 257.

The realm's namesake is connected to Nine Mountain Ancestor, who gained sentience through the Mountain River True Form Talisman and comprehended the true form of mountains and rivers, becoming nine spiritual mountains. He states that the Nine Mountain Sect's “nine mountains” refer both to those mountains and to himself 79.

Settlement and rebuilding

The Nine Mountain Sect used the realm as a refuge during its crisis, later relocating 300,000 mortals into it for protection 271. Zheng Fa subsequently accepted cultivators skilled in the Cultivation Hundred Crafts to help establish a self-sustaining cultivation civilization rather than relying on talisman methods alone 283.

The realm developed compulsory education, agricultural guidance stations, cultivation instruction, and settlements for both cultivators and mortals 281. The eventual removal of the immortal-mortal barrier allowed agricultural research and other technologies to move from the Heavenly Palace Islands into the mortal world 351.

Spiritual-root transformation

Venerable Chengkong identifies the realm as an incomplete Grotto-Heaven World, disconnected “above and below” and therefore vulnerable to exploitation. He explains that a Heaven and Earth Spiritual Root can merge with such a world and enable its continued growth 322.

The Pure Quiet Bamboo becomes that root. Its branches support the sky over the Heavenly Palace Nine Islands, while its roots extend through the mortal world and deep into the earth. It changes the realm from a largely lightning-exclusive environment into one capable of supporting many basic talisman types 350.

Contest for ownership

Zheng Fa's Nascent Soul Tribulation awakens the Heavenly Venerate, an ancient Divine Dao being whose consciousness survived within the Sun Moon Bell and the heavenly tribulation. The Heavenly Venerate claims to be the realm itself and competes with Zheng Fa for its mastery 417.

The Sun Moon Bell initially acts as an impartial judge, dividing the realm's spiritual energy equally between Zheng Fa and the Heavenly Venerate. The citizens' prayers to Zheng Fa's idols counter the spiritual energy supplied by the Heavenly Venerate's idols, helping establish Zheng Fa as the new master 417.

Heavenly Court elevation

After Zheng Fa's Yang God Body completes Corpse Release, the Sun Moon Bell merges with his Heavenly Emperor Body. Zheng Fa no longer merely uses the bell to govern the realm; he directly controls the Nine Mountain Realm himself 496.

He reshapes the Heavenly Palace Nine Islands into a celestial system of three constellations—representing immortal gods, administration, and the marketplace—and expands the realm with twenty-eight additional stars devoted to industries and education 496.
