Background

Hidan finds the severely injured Uchiha Ci floating on a newly formed hot-spring river near Yugakure City and pulls him from the water. Though he recognizes Ci as a ninja, he concludes that Ci is a good person because none of his wounds are on his back. He introduces himself with the ambition of becoming Hot Water Kage, ending the Land of Hot Water's chaos, expelling foreign ninja, and becoming a “Demigod.” 25

His desire to join the Evil God Cult stems from the Land of Hot Water's devastation during the wars of the great nations. Hidan witnessed villages destroyed by ninja and was embittered when his Hot Water ninja teacher refused to intervene against Chunin attacking civilians. Believing Yugakure and the country's rulers incapable of saving the nation, he sees the cult's promised purge and power as its only remaining hope. 27

Hidan invites Ci to become a sacrifice with him, sincerely believing the ritual to be an opportunity. When Ci instead destroys the local cult members and prevents the sacrifice of a child, Hidan feels that Ci has betrayed both their agreement and his dream. 27 30 34
