The grayish-white demon had already crawled completely out of the crack. Its mouthparts opened to their widest, revealing rings upon rings of backward-growing teeth inside, like the entrance to a meat grinder.
It had no eyes, but its head slowly turned in the air, as if searching for something.
Then it turned toward the old men crouching on the ground.
A foul-smelling mucus gushed from its mouthparts and dripped onto the ground with a sizzling sound, corroding small pits into the earth.
"Run!"
Kagome shouted.
But the old men's legs had already gone weak. They couldn't stand at all.
Kagome didn't know where her courage came from. She bent down, picked up a branch from the ground, and stood in front of the old men.
The branch was very thin.
Probably only as thick as her little finger.
Holding it in her hand, even Kagome herself thought it was ridiculous.
