Background / History
Clark Kent lived on Earth while concealing his Kryptonian identity. As a child, he displayed extraordinary strength and speed, including lifting a school bus and saving his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, during a storm. By the Kryptonian invasion, his closest family were his adoptive mother, Martha Kent, and Lois Lane. He wished the surviving Kryptonians could live peacefully among humans rather than remake Earth into Krypton 88.
Superman first appears over Gotham after the city is devastated by an earthquake and abandoned by America. Soon afterward, General Zod broadcasts a demand that Earth return Kal-El and the Codex to Krypton 76 84. The military coerces Clark into boarding a Kryptonian vessel carrying a nuclear warhead by threatening Lois; he agrees in order to protect humanity and keep the battle away from Earth’s cities 85 86.
After returning injured from space, Superman saves Batman Bruce Wayne from Faora during the Kryptonians’ assault. He and Batman later destroy the World Engine, stopping its attempt to reshape Earth’s environment 86 90. When Zod’s forces abduct Lois and Martha, Clark abandons caution to pursue them immediately, then battles seven Kryptonians in an attempt to rescue them 90 91.
Jor-El reveals Kryptonite’s effect on Kryptonian cells and exposes Clark to yellow sunlight, restoring his strength. Clark ultimately defeats Zod in their fated battle. Zod dies recognizing Clark as Krypton’s new hope and asking him to protect Earth; Clark accepts responsibility for safeguarding Kryptonian technology and the surviving Kryptonians 95 98.
Clark later helps Bai Lang understand why White Dream City’s imposed utopia is failing, repeating Jor-El’s belief that humanity must find its own path rather than have its future dictated for it. He subsequently joins the Justice League alongside the other Kryptonians and Earth’s superhumans 156 157.
Lex Luthor’s Injustice League captures Clark after Bizarro matches him in combat and a Kryptonite bullet disables him. The Justice League frees him, but the Kryptonite threat remains a recurring danger during later conflicts with Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate 184 185 208.
During the combined Crime Syndicate and Apokolips invasion, Clark remains determined to defend humanity even after being weakened and imprisoned. Nick dies protecting him from the Second Generation Joker, reinforcing Clark’s belief that humanity’s defining quality is hope 222. Clark later fights beside a middle-aged Superman from another universe against the invading Parademons 224.
After Bai Lang establishes the new universe of Heaven, Clark and Lois become parents to Jonathan Kent. He remains with the Justice League and investigates a vast gate leading to a higher-dimensional realm, disappearing alongside Bai Lang during the transit to the Sixth Dimension 229 230.
Appearance
Superman wears a blue, form-fitting suit marked with an “S” emblem on his chest and a flowing red cape. He is consistently described as tall, muscular, and physically imposing 76 85.
- Blue Kryptonian bodysuit.
- Red cape.
- Prominent chest insignia bearing an “S”.
- Black hair and a sturdy, muscular build 184.
Personality
Clark is compassionate and strongly identifies with Earth despite being Kryptonian. He repeatedly tries to reason with Zod’s forces and believes they could coexist peacefully with humanity 86 97. The destruction caused by the Kryptonian war deeply troubles him, particularly because Earth’s victory comes at the cost of his own people 98.
His protective instincts can override strategic caution. When Lois and Martha are abducted, he immediately acts despite Batman’s warnings that a plan is necessary 90. He is similarly reluctant to use overwhelming force, struggling with the Justice League’s decision to launch a nuclear attack at Apokolips 199.
Clark does not consider himself humanity’s ruler. He supports giving people the freedom to choose their own future, a philosophy that influences Bai Lang’s decision to relinquish control of White Dream City 156 157.
