A man reeking of alcohol staggered out the front door and collided with a hooded figure approaching from the opposite direction, nearly falling flat on his back. But with a twist of his waist, he tapped the ground with his right hand and regained his balance.
He was about to curse, but when he saw the other person's attire, his heart jolted. He hurriedly pretended not to have seen anything and walked around the figure.
The hooded figure entered the tavern, and a guard immediately came forward to lead the way. "This way, sir."
The hooded figure gave a slight nod and followed the guard into the tavern's basement. The scattered drinkers in the tavern did not even raise their heads, completely unaware that someone had just passed by.
After passing through a long underground corridor and turning several corners, they seemed to have long since left the tavern's boundaries. At last, the guard stopped and handed the hooded figure over to two burly men stationed at the entrance before heading back.
"Sir, I'll take you inside." One of the burly men remained at the door, while the other led the hooded figure into an inner room.
After another stretch of corridor, they arrived before a closed wooden door. The burly man leading the way knocked, and someone inside opened it with a creak, looking outside suspiciously. When he saw the discreet coiled-snake emblem embroidered on the cloak, he immediately let the visitor into the room and warmly invited him to sit. Soon, only two people remained in the room.
