Background / History

Clark is an Earth-raised Kryptonian who primarily uses the name Clark, though he accepts Kal-El when speaking with fellow Kryptonians. Before Heisenberg's return, he had little knowledge of Krypton's political structure or of his own ancestor's identity. 152 153

Heisenberg's arrival changes Clark's understanding of himself. He learns that surviving Kryptonians can be summoned to Earth and is moved by the prospect of no longer being the only member of his people. At the same time, he remains concerned that the returning Kryptonians could endanger Earth. 160

Clark has spent thirty-four years absorbing sunlight, giving him greater accumulated solar energy than newly awakened Kryptonians. Even so, he recognizes that Fiona and other trained Kryptonian soldiers may surpass him in combat experience. 192

Appearance

Clark normally wears a deep-blue Superman uniform. During the Huihe Star campaign, he changes into the black uniform associated with Krypton's Military Guild; it includes a black cape and a silver S-shaped chest emblem. 224 240

  • Blue Superman suit — his standard heroic attire. 224
  • Black Kryptonian uniform — improves solar-energy absorption and identifies him with the Military Guild. 224
  • Silver S emblem — prominently visible on his black battle suit while rescuing Kandor City. 240

Personality

Clark is compassionate, protective, and strongly oriented toward helping others. He leaves the Batcave immediately when a fire breaks out in Metropolis, and he approaches Cyborg with empathy rather than treating his unstable condition as a reason to abandon him. 155 173

He carries guilt over his distance from Kryptonian affairs and becomes determined to rescue scattered survivors after seeing how many of his people remain lost across the universe. His desire to belong to Krypton develops alongside his continuing loyalty to Earth. 197 199

Clark initially hesitates to use lethal force, but wartime experience forces him to accept that restraint can endanger his allies. He becomes more decisive during the Huihe Star battle after Diana reminds him that enemies left alive may kill his comrades. 226

He is prone to blaming himself when people suffer, including during the public unrest in Metropolis. Even after being attacked by a manipulated crowd, his first response is to apologize to Heisenberg for the chaos surrounding the Kryptonians' celebration. 247 248

Abilities & Skills

Kryptonian Physiology

Clark's body stores energy from sunlight, granting him superhuman strength, endurance, rapid recovery, and resistance to ordinary threats.

  • Sunlight rapidly restores his stamina and heals injuries, including damaged fingers and bloodshot eyes. 182
  • He can continue fighting after severe trauma; after Brainiac dislocates his limbs, he remains conscious and expects to recover after exposure to sunlight. 231
  • His power is not absolute: Brainiac overwhelms him with red energy and breaks his limbs, while Kandor City's Kryptonian environment leaves him powerless and badly injured. 231 241
  • Kryptonite remains a serious danger; Bruce retains Kryptonite as a potential countermeasure against Clark. 152 249

Flight and Super-Speed

Clark flies routinely between cities, planets, and battlefields.

  • He flies to Cyborg's home almost immediately after receiving the address. 173
  • He travels more than two thousand kilometers through Huihe Star to locate Kandor City. 240
  • His high-speed flight is fast enough that opponents expect him to escape at near-light-speed, though he can still be stopped by specialized barriers. 227

Heat Vision and Super-Senses

Clark can use his vision for both large-scale reconnaissance and destructive attacks.

  • He completes a global scan of Huihe Star, identifying 425 Boom Tubes and approximately 1.64 billion hostile life forms. 226
  • He sweeps the battlefield with Heat Vision, reducing the surviving enemies from an initial strike to fewer than three thousand. 226
  • He can unleash Heat Vision on a planetary scale during combat. 226

Force-Field Control

Clark uses a protective field around himself and those he carries.

  • His field normally keeps blood and debris from remaining on his body during battle. 226
  • On Mogo, he shields Lois and Martha from the planet's hazardous gravity and atmosphere until the environment is adjusted. 216

Combat and Leadership

Clark becomes a more capable fighter through Heisenberg's brutal training and takes an active role in recruiting and unifying the Justice League.

  • He withstands repeated injuries during training and gradually learns to counterattack Heisenberg. 184
  • He defeats Steppenwolf with a combination of physical strikes and Heat Vision, returning him to Heisenberg as a captive. 190
  • He recruits Victor Stone by acknowledging Victor's trauma and inviting him to fight Darkseid alongside the Justice League. 173
  • He helps integrate Barry Allen and Victor into the League's Kryptonian base. 174

Equipment / Attire

  • Blue Superman uniform — Clark's usual Earth-based heroic suit. 224
  • Black Kryptonian Military Guild uniform — particle-constructed combat attire that increases sunlight-absorption efficiency. 224
  • Kryptonian battle armor — used for operations in hostile cosmic environments. 207

Relationships

  • Heisenberg — Clark's Kryptonian ancestor, mentor, and the leader who gives him a renewed sense of family and homeland. Clark addresses him as “Great-Grandfather.” 152 160
  • Lois Lane — Clark's lover. She supports his heroism despite fearing for his safety; they later expect a child together. 155 248
  • Martha Kent — Clark's adoptive mother. He brings her to meet his Kryptonian relatives and remains devoted to her well-being. 216 267
  • Kara Zor-El — Clark's younger cousin. Their reunion after her rescue from the Phantom Zone leaves him overwhelmed with grief, joy, and guilt. 197 198
  • Bruce Wayne / Batman — Justice League ally and close friend. Bruce protects Clark and Lois during the Metropolis riot, while Clark later agrees to help protect Bruce. 248 250
  • Diana Prince / Wonder Woman — Justice League teammate who pushes Clark to become more decisive in battle. 152 226
  • Victor Stone / Cyborg — recruit Clark approaches with patience and empathy after Victor's uncontrollable body attacks him. 173
  • Fiona — Deputy Commander of the Kryptonian military. She initially dismisses Clark as an unworthy Earth Kryptonian, motivating his desire to prove himself as a Kryptonian warrior. 190 224

Story Role / Major Arcs

Doomsday and the Justice League

Clark meets Heisenberg after the Doomsday conflict and quickly accepts him as family. Alongside Heisenberg, Bruce, and Diana, he becomes a founding member of the Justice League. 152 154 178

Rebuilding Krypton on Earth

After Heisenberg reclaims the Kryptonian spaceship, Clark supports its conversion into a home for returning Kryptonians and a Justice League base. He is relieved by the possibility that Lois and Martha can live somewhere protected by his own people. 160

Themysciran Training

Heisenberg subjects Clark and the League to merciless training on Themyscira, repeatedly breaking Clark's body to force adaptation. Clark survives the process, improves his counterattacks, and demonstrates his growth by defeating Steppenwolf. 182 184 190

Rescue of the Kryptonian Survivors

Clark assists in rescuing Kryptonians from the Phantom Zone, reunites with Kara, and accepts responsibility for locating survivors scattered through space. He begins identifying more strongly as Kal-El and as a representative of his people. 197 199

Huihe Star and Kandor City

Wearing the black Military Guild uniform, Clark joins the campaign against Brainiac and Apokolips. He becomes more ruthless against Parademons, survives Brainiac's overwhelming power, and prioritizes finding Kandor City over returning to the main battle. 224 226 231 240

Clark locates Kandor City inside Huihe Star's shattered core, bringing hope to its surviving Kryptonians. Entering the city after its barrier is removed leaves him powerless in Krypton's environment, but his rescue still allows the trapped population to begin evolving under yellow-sun radiation. 241

Metropolis Crisis and Infinite Exploration

Clark is targeted by public hostility and propaganda in Metropolis, where a crowd attacks him and Lois. Afterward, he moves with Lois and Martha into a gravity-particle-reinforced home on Mogo, where he no longer needs to conceal his strength. 248 267

As an explorer, Clark enters new universes through Infinite City. In one later world, he resumes wearing his Superman suit and performing heroic work after initially believing its established superhero system was genuinely benevolent. 267 446
