Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial awakening | 12 | Spiritual Sense emerges at Qi Refining Layer One. Chen Mo can perceive his surroundings in a roughly 3-meter radius and inspect his own body, but extending it farther causes mental fatigue. |
| Major expansion | 837 | Its range doubles during an advancement; Chen Mo can sense a mine more than 1,000 meters away and later imprint the Green Jade Sword and Soul Chasing Nails with it. |
| Sea of Consciousness refinement | 1175 | While at Foundation Establishment Layer Three, Chen Mo endures spiritual pressure that refines his Sea of Consciousness and Spiritual Sense, though it causes headaches and sluggishness. |
| Mental Power consolidation | 1176 | A week of seclusion improves the cohesion and defensive quality of Chen Mo’s Mental Power and Divine Sense. |
| Enlightenment-driven growth | 1579 | At Foundation Establishment Layer Four, an enlightenment expands and condenses Chen Mo’s Sea of Consciousness; his range reaches 700 meters, nearly 100 meters farther than before. |
| Artifact-nurturing enhancement | 1813 | Repeatedly nurturing the golden armguards strengthens Chen Mo’s Divine Sense beyond that of an ordinary Foundation Establishment Layer Five cultivator. |
| Control-focused improvement | 1848, 1849 | Increased Mental Power improves talisman drawing, array carving, lifting capacity, and control of the Soul Chasing Nails and Green Jade Sword. |
| Refined 1,000-meter range | 1854 | Although his Sea of Consciousness shrinks by about one-third after absorbing an imprint, his range remains 1,000 meters and his control and lifting capacity become more efficient. |
| Soul Guiding Flower enhancement | 2425 | After advancing to Foundation Establishment Layer Six, Chen Mo’s range reaches 1,500 meters. His Sea of Consciousness is stated to possess peak Golden Core-level strength. |
Background / History
Spiritual Sense is initially introduced as the means by which cultivators access jade slips. A jade slip records a cultivator’s Divine Sense, allowing another cultivator to read its contents by placing it against their forehead and entering it with their own Divine Sense. Restrictions placed on such items can repel, injure, or severely damage an intruder’s Spiritual Sense. 2
Chen Mo receives the foundation necessary to cultivate through Ye Shang’s true essence seed, but does not develop Spiritual Sense until reaching Qi Refining Layer One. Once awakened, it gives him a clear, panoramic awareness of his surroundings and allows internal observation of his body. 2 12
The Universe Bead steadily supports this faculty by slowly increasing soul power during cultivation. Soul power determines the scale of a cultivator’s Spiritual Sense, reduces the risk of cultivation deviation, and improves the likelihood of successful breakthroughs. 12
Over time, Chen Mo’s unusually strong Sea of Consciousness becomes one of his greatest advantages. It improves reconnaissance, artifact control, array work, combat awareness, and resistance against hostile mental techniques, while also making him a potential target for cultivators seeking powerful Spiritual Bodies or tool spirits. 1815 2425 2656
Abilities & Skills
Panoramic Perception
Spiritual Sense functions as an all-directional awareness separate from ordinary vision. Chen Mo describes it as a clear “third eye” with no blind spots.
- Perceives objects and movement in a 360-degree area around the user. 12
- Can detect minute details, including dust floating in the air. 12
- Functions in total darkness and can supplement Chen Mo’s natural night vision. 1849 2615
- Gives Chen Mo a substantial reaction advantage against attacks from multiple directions. 1914
- Allows long-range observation of terrain, caves, spiritual-energy sources, hidden patterns, and ongoing battles. 839 1607 2466
Internal Observation
Spiritual Sense allows a cultivator to inspect their own physical and spiritual condition.
- Chen Mo first uses it to observe the state of his body after entering Qi Refining Layer One. 12
- He uses internal scans when concerned that a Spiritual Body may have entered him to devour his soul or possess his body. 428
- It helps him observe alien energy within ability users’ cells and ability channels. 1489
- It reveals changes to his Sea of Consciousness, soul awareness, and Mental Power after breakthroughs or injuries. 1854 2425
Spiritual-Energy Detection
Spiritual Sense can perceive Spiritual Energy, true essence, yin evil energy, and related fluctuations.
- Chen Mo detects dense Spiritual Energy in underground spaces and concealed tunnels. 839 2516
- He identifies spiritual fluctuations from objects, including a jade pendant containing yin evil runes. 2435 2446
- He distinguishes cultivators’ Divine Sense from other forms of mental activity, such as the Divine Sense controlling a sandstorm. 2466
- He detects environmental abnormalities, including blood being absorbed through ground patterns toward a temple structure. 1607
Artifact Control
Chen Mo uses Spiritual Sense to refine, operate, and improve the responsiveness of magical artifacts.
- He enters and controls the Universe Bead more freely with Spiritual Sense than with his physical body; within it, his consciousness can control the space like a deity. 14
- He imprints the Green Jade Sword and Soul Chasing Nails with Spiritual Sense to establish refined control. 837
- Enhanced control makes the Soul Chasing Nails faster, quieter, and capable of piercing rock with little resistance. 1849
- He directs the Green Jade Sword through cave walls to cut and excavate rock. 1849
- Spiritual Sense can be split into slivers and placed in puppet array disks so the puppets recognize Chen Mo as their master. 2181
Imprints, Tracking, and Subjugation
A Divine Sense imprint can serve as a spiritual mark on an item, person, or Spiritual Body.
- An imprint on an object or person can allow the user to locate the target within a certain distance. 528
- Chen Mo marks a convoy vehicle so he can continue tracking the woman carrying a Spiritual Energy-emitting item. 2436
- He leaves Divine Sense imprints in the Seas of Consciousness of tree spirits to enforce their submission. 2580
- A Spiritual Body can be subdued by splitting off and branding a trace of Divine Sense onto it; once completed, Lan Caijie is subject to Chen Mo’s commands. 2658
- Such marks are extremely dangerous for the recipient: if betrayal occurs, the owner can destroy the marked soul. 2578
Mental Attacks
Spiritual Sense can be weaponized against an opponent’s Sea of Consciousness, though Chen Mo treats this as a high-risk option.
- The legacy describes Mental Stab, a late Qi Refining technique that attacks mental consciousness directly. 108
- Chen Mo can condense his Divine Sense into a needle-like Mental Stab. 2148
- He can enter an enemy’s Sea of Consciousness and engage in direct soul combat when necessary. 1815 1818
- Chen Mo avoids Spiritual Sense combat whenever possible because damage to it also damages the soul and can be difficult to repair. 2466
Concealment and Focused Probing
Chen Mo can alter how he deploys Spiritual Sense to avoid alerting psychic ability users.
- Psychic ability users can sense Spiritual Sense because both rely on Mental Power. 1528
- He learns a mental Breath Concealment Technique to appear ordinary even when observed with Spiritual Sense. 1528
- He can narrow his Spiritual Sense into a beam or needle rather than sweeping an entire area. 1607 1619
- He can wrap his Spiritual Sense around a mental sensing trap to prevent it from triggering and reduce its energy leakage. 2590
Limitations
- Early range and fatigue — At Qi Refining Layer One, Chen Mo’s range is only about 3 meters, and prolonged extension causes mental exhaustion. 12
- Unknown restrictions — Probing protected jade slips or unfamiliar treasures can cause severe Spiritual Sense damage; recovery may take years, and severe injury can leave the victim mentally incapacitated. 2 12
- Array suppression — Formations, barriers, stone, and special environments can restrict or block Spiritual Sense. In one canyon, Chen Mo’s range is reduced to 3 meters. 2425 2731 2792
- Psychic detection — Psychic ability users are highly sensitive to mental fluctuations and may detect careless scans. 1528 1726
- Mental defenses — A sufficiently powerful cloak can render Chen Mo’s Mental Stab unable to lock onto its wearer. 2148
- Soul damage — Spiritual Sense is tied to the soul; injury, loss, or excessive splitting can undermine a cultivator’s foundation and require prolonged recovery. 528 2658
- Danger of splitting — Splitting even a trace of Divine Sense causes extreme pain and damages the Sea of Consciousness; Chen Mo estimates roughly a week of recovery with Spirit Nurturing Pills after subduing Lan Caijie. 2658
Comparison with Other Mental Powers
| User Type | Mental-Power Application | Difference from Spiritual Sense |
|---|---|---|
| Cultivators | Use Divine Sense for reconnaissance, internal observation, artifact control, restrictions, imprints, and limited mental attacks. 1531 | Every cultivator possesses it after reaching the required cultivation stage; its range and precision depend on soul strength. |
| Psychic Ability Users | Use Mental Power primarily for detection, interference, and direct attacks on an opponent’s Sea of Consciousness. 1528 1531 | Their attacks are difficult to defend against among peers, but their application is described as cruder and less versatile than a cultivator’s Divine Sense. |
| Xiantian Martial Artists | Develop a sixth-sense-like environmental awareness that can form a short-range perceptual domain. 669 | Their perception cannot manipulate objects or interfere with opponents and is considered far inferior to a cultivator’s Divine Sense. |
