Chapter 8: The Fastest Interview in History
"Please, have a seat." Yue Wen invited the young woman in, gesturing for her to sit on the old sofa. He then asked, "What should I call you?"
"My name is Zhao Xing'er," the young woman replied gracefully, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear after settling in.
"Congratulations, you've passed the interview. You can start officially tomorrow. You'll be on probation with your first assignment, and one successful trial will lead to full-time employment. How does that sound?" Yue Wen said smoothly.
"I... Huh?" Zhao Xing'er seemed to have prepared something, but she froze after uttering just one word.
Wait.
I passed just like that?
Is the requirement for this interview just to be able to say your own name?
Even getting into kindergarten had a higher bar than this; they made us say our parents' names back then!
For a moment, the young woman began to suspect this was some kind of criminal hideout, a place that would take her on a team-building trip to the southeast after a month and have her inviting friends and family over by the second month...
Yue Wen wasn't lowering his standards because she was attractive; the standards were just that low to begin with.
There was no room for further reduction.
He wasn't looking for a powerful fighter, just an assistant to fill a headcount. When an assignment came up, he would be the one dealing with the Evil Spirits anyway.
He actually disliked it if someone genuinely wanted to help fight Evil Spirits.
As long as the other party was a cultivator, that was enough.
This young lady's eyes held a spiritual light, and her spirit was full and robust. It was clear she had cultivation, and that was sufficient.
"Um..." The success was so sudden it caught her off guard. Zhao Xing'er reorganized her thoughts before saying, "Aren't you going to ask any more questions?"
"Haha, alright, I'll ask one more question," Yue Wen said. "Ms. Zhao, are you satisfied with our Firm?"
"Me?" Zhao Xing'er pondered for a moment, then replied, "Our Firm's storefront is low-key and down-to-earth. The interior is arranged in a way that looks chaotic but is orderly. It looks like a vibrant startup team. I'm very satisfied."
Yue Wen immediately nodded. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you."
He hadn't prepared any interview process at all. There was no need to spend too much thought on this assistant. As long as he had someone, he could get the Firm's business license, and that was enough.
Looking at Yue Wen's smile, Zhao Xing'er even had a rather strange thought.
Did things progress too quickly between us?
Did we really get to this point already?
The fastest interview in history concluded. After she walked out of the Firm, she was still somewhat dazed. After walking a block, she finally took out her phone and sent a message to someone.
"I got the job! The process was a bit strange... but it went pretty smoothly. I specifically found a completely unknown, run-down Firm that looks more like an unlicensed operation than a doghouse, so it definitely won't attract attention."
A moment later, a reply came back: "That's great! Now you can establish yourself in Jiangcheng."
Zhao Xing'er added another message: "The Firm might be rundown, but the boss is a handsome guy."
"Hehe, even better," the other person replied.
Zhao Xing'er then asked, "Are the identity and documents you got for me okay?"
The other person replied with certainty, "Just focus on your work and studies. If there's even the slightest hitch, may I be captured by ten muscular men and locked up for three days and three nights!"
Zhao Xing'er: "Are you sure you're not just making a wish?"
"You should be the one to be careful, don't seriously injure your colleagues again," the other person changed the subject.
Zhao Xing'er's expression turned troubled, and she quietly replied, "I'll try my best."
Having successfully found a new assistant, Yue Wen rode his electric scooter to the East City Cemetery again that evening.
However, this time, he wasn't greeted by just Grandpa Huang.
Old Man Huang walked over with a smile, a stern-looking young man following behind him.
He was a young man in a white training uniform, about 1.8 meters tall, with a lean build. His long, slanted bangs covered his right eye. His eyes weren't large, and his skin was clean. He wasn't particularly handsome, but he had a cool and aloof aura.
"Little Yue," Old Man Huang called out. "Thanks for coming all this way again. I haven't had a chance to tell you, but you don't need to come out tonight to clear out Evil Spirits. They've invited a newcomer."
"Invited someone else?" Yue Wen frowned slightly. He looked at the young man opposite him and asked, "Why?"
"It's not that they're dissatisfied with you. You mentioned yesterday that there were monsters appearing, so I quickly reported it to the higher-ups. They were worried you couldn't handle it, so they specifically invited an Immortal Sect disciple to oversee things," Old Man Huang explained.
An Immortal Sect disciple?
Yue Wen re-examined the young man, thinking that it made sense why he was so aloof.
Even the weakest and smallest Immortal Sect had background resources that ordinary rogue cultivators couldn't compare to.
For those wild cultivators whose cultivation techniques were pieced together and who couldn't even muster a single intact Magic Artifact, Immortal Sect disciples cultivated faster and safer. When they were at the same level, their combat power was overwhelmingly superior; there was simply no comparison.
Of course, Yue Wen wasn't a traditional rogue cultivator.
He just appeared to be one.
"This is just a cemetery, why are they going to such great lengths?" Yue Wen asked curiously. "Inviting an Immortal Sect disciple must be quite expensive, right?"
Old Man Huang chuckled. "It's definitely not cheap. The higher-ups agreed to invite him entirely because they value our East City Cemetery, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the security supervisor for the East Suburb is my son."
"Then I understand," Yue Wen nodded, patting the seat of his electric scooter. "Please, sir, sit down while we talk. Don't tire yourself out."
"Heh, it's nothing," Old Man Huang waved his hand. "You don't have to refund the money anyway. It's like working one less day, pretty good, right?"
Not good at all.
Does he think I'm here for the money? Yue Wen thought. I'm here for the Lantern Monster!
Otherwise, why would the price be like this?
After a slight pause, he said, "No."
"Hmm?" Old Man Huang and the young man both looked at him.
Yue Wen's expression was solemn. "As the saying goes, 'take someone's money and resolve their troubles.' Since I've accepted the payment to clear out the Lantern Monster, I must personally clean up this entire public cemetery for you! Uncle Huang, this is my principle as a person. I hope you can understand."
"This..." Old Man Huang was silenced by his words for a moment, then scratched his sparse scalp and sighed, "Ah, Little Yue, there aren't many kids like you who are so principled nowadays."
He could have taken the money and left, but he insisted on finishing the job.
Two words: righteous!
The young man's gaze towards Yue Wen held a hint of admiration. He stepped forward and said, "I am Qi Dian from Linjiang Gate. Although you are a rogue cultivator, your principles are worthy of respect. I will stay here tonight to support you. If any troublesome Evil Spirits appear, I will handle them."
In the minds of these Immortal Sect disciples, rogue cultivators were mostly of low cultivation, but cunning and deceitful.
Having no background also meant having no scruples.
Their elders often warned them to be especially careful of these rogue cultivators when traveling, particularly in the wastelands outside cities, where they were even more dangerous than Evil Spirits.
That's why Qi Dian's initial attitude towards Yue Wen was indifferent.
However, after hearing Yue Wen speak like this, Qi Dian realized the man seemed to have good character, and his feelings towards him began to change, leading him to initiate a conversation.
"Thank you," Yue Wen nodded. "With my mere late Unity Realm cultivation, having fellow Daoist Qi here to support me will indeed put my mind at ease."
Linjiang Gate was a local Sect in Jiang City. While it was nothing in the grand scheme of the cultivation world, it was considered a major sect locally.
After all, the entire Tianbei Prefecture had historically been known as a "cultivation desert."
Aside from the people from the Supervision Bureau, this was Yue Wen's first time interacting with a cultivator who had "formal training," so he naturally held the other party in high regard.
However, after he finished speaking, Qi Dian's eyes visibly twitched.
Old Man Huang, standing nearby, was pleased to see this. "That's good. It'll be more interesting for you two young people to work together. Little Qi comes from an Immortal Sect, so he can cover you if anything happens. Little Qi, what's your realm right now?"
What's my realm?
I'm mid Unity Realm. Among the disciples of the same generation in Linjiang Gate, I'm already considered one of the best.
This rogue cultivator looks about my age, and he's already late Unity Realm? If he had enough resources, wouldn't he have a good chance of breaking through to the Gang Realm?
Is this the kind of person you can hire for a thousand yuan?
Qi Dian was surprised inwardly but remained silent outwardly.
Although he was a minor realm lower, he was confident in his combat power far exceeding the other's. However, for an Immortal Sect disciple of similar age to be outranked by a rogue cultivator was indeed not very glorious.
While he was momentarily speechless, Old Man Huang pressed on, "Hey? Little Qi, why aren't you talking? Hehe, do you cultivators from Immortal Sects have to keep your realms a secret?"
Asking, asking, asking.
An old man who can't read the room at all.
Qi Dian gritted his teeth silently, and after a long pause, he blurted out, "I'm ordering takeout. Do you guys want fried chicken?"
