Background
Huang Chao led a rebellion originating in Yuzhou under the banner of “Heavenly Equalizer,” declaring an aim to overthrow the Great Xia court and bring equality under heaven. Soon after his rebellion became known, he sent Xu Wenjing to recruit Lin Mo, offering him the title of Dragon Perch Valley General, authority over Guangnan Commandery, and eventual enfeoffment. Lin Mo recognized that Huang Chao intended to use Black Wind Stronghold to distract the court, declining open allegiance while leaving room for a secret alliance. 104
During the Zhongyuan campaign, Huang Chao fielded roughly 500,000 rebels against 200,000 Imperial troops. His core Yellow King Army and Sacred Artifact, the War Horn, enabled his forces to resist the Imperial Guard with extraordinary ferocity, but his army was eventually broken by Li Siyi's Heavy Cavalry. Huang Chao escaped south under the rear guard sacrifice of the One-Eyed Dragon and the Yellow King Army. 212 214 216 217
After ambushing pursuing Imperial troops at Crouching Ox Mountain, Huang Chao abandoned the route toward Kyoto and marched south into Lingnan Dao. His advance created the opening Lin Mo used to seize Pu County's Earl's Manor vault while Wei Zhaodu redeployed his main army northward. 248
