Background / History

Titans are the overwhelming threat beyond humanity's walls. Though they appear to be mindless humanoid monsters, they specifically prey on humans; a Titan without a target may wander sluggishly, but one that detects a person becomes a fast, frenzied predator. 5 6

A century before the story, the first King Reiss used the Coordinate ability to control Titans and constructed the three Walls of the Goddess from hardened large Titans rather than using that power to fight back. The dormant Wall Titans remain embedded within the walls as long as they are not exposed to sunlight. 110 111

Lian Ye's examinations of the Female Giant and later discoveries reveal that Titans are fundamentally human-derived biological war machines. Intelligent Titans retain a human “pilot” within the nape, while a mindless Titan is formed when its original human becomes fully assimilated into the Titan flesh. 99 115

Appearance

Titans are enormous humanoid beings with highly variable body types and sizes. Ordinary specimens commonly have bloated, disproportionate bodies, while Titan Power wielders such as the Spirit, Female, and Armored Giants have more humanlike and muscular forms. 99

Titans instinctively seek and consume humans.

Wilderness Hunts

Titans establish the danger of Lian Ye's first world and become the intended prey of Pride Stalker's hunting abilities. His first major hunt is a lone 10-meter-class Titan: an initial nape strike fails to penetrate its defenses, but he kills it by activating Ruthlessness/Cruelty for a strengthened attack. 5 6 7

The kill grants Lian Ye his first Bone Tooth Necklace Trophy Stack, increasing his physical attributes and beginning his progression as a Titan hunter. 7

Fall of Shiganshina

A Titan enters Shiganshina District and approaches Carla Yeager while Eren and Mikasa attempt to free her from rubble. Lian Ye ambushes and kills it at the nape without ODM Gear, demonstrating to the witnesses that a human can treat Titans as prey. 15 16

Battle of Trost

The Spirit Giant's refusal to attack humans leads Lian Ye to suspect that it is not an ordinary Titan. He chooses not to kill it despite having access to its unguarded nape, later cooperating with Eren's Titan form during the operation to seal Trost's breach. 66 79 82

Female and Armored Giant Hunts

Lian Ye defeats the Female Giant by attacking the hardened structure around her nape, then removes Annie Leonhart from the hollow space within. This confirms that at least some Titans are human-operated forms. 99

Against the Armored Giant, Lian Ye abandons inefficient attacks on its armor, cuts the tendons behind both knees, and attacks its exposed front neck. 119 120 121

Revelation of Titan Origins

After learning more about Titan Power, Lian Ye concludes that the mindless Titans he previously hunted were also once human. This knowledge challenges his former hunter-prey worldview and forces him to reconsider whether Titans can simply be treated as trophies. 115
