A Four-Dimensional Battle

Chen Shouyi drew in a breath of air heavy with methane ice crystals and surveyed the enormous planet.

Neptune was called a gas giant, but because of its ultra-low temperatures, its surface was like Pluto's—a massive ball of ice.

Since Pluto had been devoured, this was now the outermost edge of the Solar System, this miniature universe.

Of course, that was from a four-dimensional perspective.

Viewed in three dimensions, there was no way to tell this was the outer edge.

Generally speaking, zero dimensions were a point, one dimension was a line, two dimensions were a plane, and three dimensions were a solid.

On a sheet of white paper, we could easily draw two perpendicular axes, X and Y, then imagine a Z-axis perpendicular to both. This was the three-dimensional coordinate system people commonly used.

So where was the fourth-dimensional S-axis?

Simple logical deduction suggested that the S-axis should be perpendicular to the X-, Y-, and Z-axes.

But there was no way to draw it. It lay beyond the limits of human imagination and understanding—not to mention the limits of imagination itself. If we compared this sheet of paper to the world visible to human eyes, the S-axis would be a pen standing upright on the paper, perpendicular to it.

The world humans inhabited was merely a membrane of the universe, the surface of a hypersphere. The fourth dimension was the universe's true form.
