Background / History
Zhu Gaochi serves as Regent Crown Prince while Emperor Zhu Di is imperiled on the northern front. Alarmed by Zhu Zhanjun's proposal to send 3,000 “household guards” to rescue the Emperor, he initially fears that the army itself could bring ruin upon their family. Even after witnessing its equipment and scale, he remains frightened by the political implications of his son maintaining such a force 2 3.
Already burdened by years of overwork, poor health, suppressed emotions, and little exercise, Zhu Gaochi suffers a severe coughing fit while debating whether to grant Zhu Zhanjun's troops a temporary banner. Zhu Zhanjun gives him a Pill for Cultivating Origin and Solidifying Foundation, after which he recovers dramatically; by the following day, his voice, complexion, and authority have returned 5 6.
Following Zhu Zhanjun's departure, Zhu Gaochi backs his son's conditions in principle and promises to manage the capital so he can campaign without concern. He nevertheless shares Crown Princess Zhang's anxiety that Zhu Zhanjun's military strength, wealth, and accomplishments may eventually outgrow the position of Prince Zheng 9.
His physical courage remains a major weakness. After surviving an assassination attempt, he faints upon seeing the arrow embedded in his chest; his fear of blood leaves him ashamed and depressed, particularly because the northern war demands more from a Crown Prince 36 38. He later tries to compensate by requisitioning the Great Snow Dragon Riders and volunteering to lead them personally, imagining a decisive northern victory despite his frailty 39.
Zhu Gaochi repeatedly struggles to reconcile family affection with imperial necessity. He is reluctant to abandon his brothers, even after Zhu Zhanjun exposes Prince Han's network of informants within the Eastern Palace. During the judgment of Zhu Gaoxu, Zhu Zhanjun quietly stops him from pleading for mercy before Zhu Di executes the traitorous prince 118 119.
As regent during the Wu Gao rebellion, Zhu Gaochi accepts responsibility for pacifying the revolt within a month. Later, with Zhu Di and Zhu Zhanjun absent, he finds himself unable to force the ministries and provincial officials to provide grain and support for the northern army, exposing the limits of his authority over the court 133 157.
His illness resurfaces during the northern crisis. Sun Banxian diagnoses chronic exhaustion, depleted qi and blood, internal cold, and potentially fatal damage to his organs; Zhu Gaochi recognizes that the described symptoms match his own condition 160. When his health prevents him from governing, Crown Princess Zhang issues the decree making Zhu Zhanjun temporary Regent. Zhu Gaochi subsequently embraces his son's rise, appointing him Grand Marshal of All Troops Under Heaven with authority over all national forces 171 177.
Appearance
Zhu Gaochi is a stout, physically frail middle-aged man whose poor health is often visible in his pale complexion, shallow breathing, and exhaustion.
- Described as having an obese or plump build 3 157.
- Frequently appears pale, weak, or bedridden during periods of illness 5 38 160.
- Regains a ruddy complexion and vigorous bearing after taking Zhu Zhanjun's restorative pill 6.
Personality
Zhu Gaochi is fundamentally benevolent and deeply attached to his family. He worries for Zhu Zhanjun's safety, appreciates his wife's care for their son, and cannot easily sever his emotional bond with Zhu Gaoxu and Zhu Gaosui even after their crimes become clear 9 118 119.
His compassion is paired with indecision and anxiety. He fears blood, political scandal, rebellion, and the consequences of his son's growing private power; when Zhu Zhanjun's cavalry enters the capital, Zhu Gaochi immediately assumes the family is facing a rebellion 38 80. Court obstruction later leaves him frustrated and openly doubtful of his own effectiveness as regent 157.
Despite these weaknesses, he can become firm when convinced of the stakes. He authorizes a designation for Zhu Zhanjun's forces, commits to supporting his son's demands during the northern campaign, and ultimately recognizes that Zhu Zhanjun's decisive strength is what Great Ming requires 6 9 177.
