Background / History
Tywin ruled the Westerlands with enough authority to make House Lannister wealthy, prestigious, and internally united. The Westerlands’ strength was attributed less to its depleted gold mines than to decades of his rule. 112
When Robb Stark captured Dreadfort and took Roose Bolton prisoner, Tywin immediately recognized that the North was becoming difficult to undermine. He concluded that Robb had anticipated and countered Roose’s plans step by step. 44
Following Eddard Stark’s death, Tywin prepared House Lannister for a decisive war against the North and Riverlands, declaring that the family would either establish a lasting dynasty or be annihilated. 86 Robb’s capture of Lannisport and Casterly Rock dealt a major blow to Lannister prestige and forced Tywin to divide his attention between Riverrun and the defense of his ancestral lands. 115 128
Appearance
Tywin is an older man with white hair and pale green eyes. He favors luxurious, meticulously tailored clothing marked with House Lannister’s lion imagery. 44 149 176
- Pale green eyes. 44
- White-haired by the time of his negotiations with Olenna Tyrell. 176
- Wears refined leather coats and Lannister armor, often featuring gold-thread lion insignia. 149 176
- Maintains a composed, imposing bearing even while exercising power over King Joffrey. 149
Personality
Tywin is calculating, ruthless, and intensely concerned with House Lannister’s power, reputation, and survival. He treats political relationships as transactions, rewards useful service, and discards allies or subordinates once they become liabilities. 167 198
He is capable of adapting after defeat. Robb’s magic, the fall of Casterly Rock, and the collapse of his earlier campaigns repeatedly force Tywin to change strategy rather than surrender the conflict. 131 169 176
Tywin can show concern for his family, particularly Jaime and Kevan, but his political priorities often override personal affection. He dismisses Tyrion’s successes, assigns him dangerous political tasks, and publicly humiliates him despite relying on his intelligence. 133 200 226
Abilities & Skills
Military Strategy
Tywin is an experienced commander who relies on traps, feints, siegecraft, and the manipulation of enemy loyalties.
- Orchestrated the Vale cavalry’s encirclement that captured Edmure Tully at the Crossroads. 133
- Used prisoner treatment, false retreats, and infiltrators to destabilize Riverrun and its commanders. 144 163 167
- Planned a wildfire ambush at Riverrun, then turned the defeat at Golden Tooth into an opportunity to bait Robb into another trap. 167 168
- Prepared a multilayered defense of King’s Landing involving wildfire, the Unflagged Uprising, Stannis Baratheon, and Andar Royce. 228
Political Manipulation
Tywin uses titles, marriages, hostages, and territorial rewards to secure obedience.
- Promised Riverrun to House Piper in exchange for luring Robb into a trap. 167
- Offered castles and titles to secure cooperation, including rewards for Bronn and the new lord of Night Song. 133 187
- Pressured the Vale through Tyrion’s mission to win over Lysa Arryn while seeking to isolate Petyr Baelish. 134
- Coerced Andar Royce into fighting by holding Bronze Yohn hostage. 228
Counter-Magic Measures
After witnessing Robb’s ice magic, Tywin sought supernatural means to counter him.
- Recruited unusual individuals through the Alchemists’ Guild in search of powers that could oppose Robb. 176 186
- Accepted Machiro, a Red Priest capable of manifesting fire, into his service. 186
- Treated Jaime’s account of Thoros’s resurrection magic as credible and viewed Red Priests as potential military assets. 200
- Increased wildfire production and encouraged further magical enhancement of its destructive power. 176
Rule of King’s Landing
Tywin assumed effective control of King’s Landing while serving as Hand.
- Ordered the rebuilding of the Mud Gate, later renamed River Gate, using forced labor from Flea Bottom. 149 176
- Ordered adults in Flea Bottom seized for labor rather than raising wages, viewing them as valuable labor resources. 149
- Removed corrupt Gold Cloaks, executed Rhaegar Bronn’s faction as scapegoats, and replaced many Gold Cloaks with Lannister cavalry. 186
- Rebuilt Flea Bottom and restored order sufficiently to gain public support among some residents and merchants. 188
Major Arcs
War against the North and Riverlands
Tywin underestimated Robb’s early rise, then faced escalating setbacks as the North captured Dreadfort, Lannisport, Casterly Rock, and the Twins. He continued to seek decisive engagements against Robb while attempting to seize Riverrun and fracture Stark-Tully alliances. 44 115 131 167
Alliance and Betrayal of House Tyrell
Tywin approached Olenna Tyrell after Robb’s victories weakened House Lannister. He used Robb’s magic and New Law to convince her that House Stark threatened the traditional nobility, securing an alliance on Tyrell terms. 176 177
He later turned on House Tyrell, participating in a campaign that weakened the Reach and arranging terms that demanded its submission, military resources, and Margaery’s marriage to Tommen. 198
Fall of King’s Landing
Tywin assembled his final trap as Robb’s army approached King’s Landing, coordinating Lannister forces, wildfire, Stannis, Andar Royce, and the Unflagged Uprising. 228 Robb’s overwhelming power broke through River Gate, however, and Tywin surrendered rather than flee. 230
Seven days later, Tywin publicly confessed to ordering the murder of Elia Martell and her children, poisoning King Robert, and framing Eddard Stark for treason. Robb executed him and stripped House Lannister of its noble status. 231
Relationships

- Tyrion Lannister — Youngest son. Tywin recognizes Tyrion’s intellect but regularly demeans him, assigns him difficult missions, and dismisses his accomplishments. 133 134 226
- Kevan Lannister — Brother and longtime deputy. Kevan provides counsel and commands Lannister forces; Tywin entrusts him with major campaigns and personally responds when he is wounded saving Tywin. 86 169
- Cersei Lannister — Daughter and political ally. Tywin works with Cersei to preserve Lannister control of the Iron Throne, though his authority overshadows hers and Joffrey’s. 149 228
- Joffrey Baratheon — Grandson. Tywin treats Joffrey as an immature obstacle and exercises more practical authority in King’s Landing than the king himself. 149
- Tommen Baratheon — Grandson. Tywin considers Tommen more suitable than Joffrey and patiently instructs him in the conduct expected of a king. 175 176
- Robb Stark — Principal enemy. Tywin initially calls Robb a “wolf cub,” later acknowledges him as a terrifying direwolf and devotes his remaining strategies to defeating him. 44 131
- Olenna Tyrell — Temporary ally. Tywin negotiates a Lannister-Tyrell alliance with Olenna, then later betrays House Tyrell in pursuit of broader control. 176 177 198
- Machiro — Red Priest recruited to provide magical support against Robb Stark and the perceived “God of Cold.” 186 190
- Oberyn Martell — Enemy and captor. Oberyn finds Tywin after King’s Landing falls, but Robb prevents Oberyn from killing him before the public trial. 230 231
