Background / History
Muramasa is the spirit entrusted with housing the Divine Power of the Divine Sword Muramasa. She identifies herself as the sword’s administrator rather than its intrinsic sword spirit: divine power cannot be stored in cold steel alone, so it is held within her soul while she resides inside the blade. Azer separately senses a consciousness belonging to the sword itself, a presence Muramasa claims not to have perceived. 481
She has guarded Hori for hundreds of years as a Human Pillar imbued with Divine Power. Her existence is tied to the ancient sacrifice that enabled Muramasa’s power to purify defilement, repel invaders, and preserve Hori; the curse left by those events continued through the Asatake bloodline. 490 529 530
Muramasa had known previous wielders, but none prompted the Divine Sword to respond as strongly as Azer. The blade had called to him since childhood, and he finally drew it during the Kasuga Festival—the first recorded successful drawing from the stone. Muramasa then appeared and formally acknowledged him as her master. 480 481 482
Appearance
Muramasa manifests as a cute, petite, ethereal girl who floats in midair. Her incorporeal appearance initially leads Azer to mistake her for a ghost. 481
- Usually moves by flying and can pass through trees, bushes, and other obstacles. 490
- Cannot normally touch physical objects, though she can physically cling to and touch Azer. 489 499
- Is generally unseen and unheard by ordinary people; Azer, Asatake Yoshino, and Hitachi Mako can perceive her, while Asatake Anqing cannot. 482 494 498
- Rena becomes able to see her while influenced by the final Vessel fragment. 537
Personality
Muramasa is childish, expressive, and easily offended, especially when Azer calls her a ghost or questions her competence. She can be unreliable in unfamiliar situations, yet she takes her position as Azer’s manager and Hori’s guardian seriously. 481 490
Despite her spiritual nature and centuries of guardianship, she is notably afraid of ghosts, dark mountains, and Cursed Gods. Her fear does not stop her from entering the Divine Sword immediately when Azer is in danger. 490 526
She becomes increasingly attached to Azer, frequently accompanies his daily routine, worries over his injuries and Divine Power use, and becomes more cheerful after his arrival in Hori. 498 518 525
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual Manifestation
Muramasa can manifest independently from the sword as an incorporeal spirit.
- Flies freely and travels through physical obstacles. 490
- Can locate and catch up to Azer over distance. 490
- Is invisible to most people, although individuals connected to Hori’s spiritual affairs may see her. 482 494
- Has limited ability to affect the physical world outside of interactions with Azer. 489 499
Divine-Power Possession
Muramasa enters the Divine Sword to release the Divine Power stored within her spiritual body. Without her possession, the blade is effectively ordinary iron despite its ability to communicate with Azer. 498 500
- Turns Muramasa into a divine blade that can sever spiritual bodies and destroy entities that should not exist in the world. 498 499
- Allows the sword to purify defilement and easily cut apart Cursed Gods. 491 499
- Can restore the sword if it is damaged or broken through Divine Power. 499
- Consumes her stored Divine Power and leaves her fatigued after extended use. 498
- Does not significantly improve the sword’s mundane sharpness or durability; it is ineffective as a specialized tool for cutting wood or stone. 499
Divine Power Transfer
Muramasa can guide Divine Power from the sword into a compatible wielder. Azer’s exceptional ability to harmonize with weapons allows him to absorb, retain, and cultivate that power safely. 500 501
- Resonates with Azer and gradually transfers Divine Power through the sword’s hilt. 500
- Enables Azer to integrate Divine Power into his body rather than merely channeling it through the blade. 500
- Is ordinarily fatal or crippling for humans; reckless Divine Power use can immobilize the body, disturb the soul, cause coma, or leave the user permanently unresponsive. 518
- Muramasa remains concerned that Azer’s growth in Divine Power may exceed what his mortal body and soul can safely endure. 518
Knowledge of Defilement and Cursed Gods
As Hori’s long-standing guardian, Muramasa understands the threat posed by Cursed Gods, defilement, and the Vessel fragments.
- Identifies the black sludge entities in Hori’s mountains as Cursed Gods. 490
- Explains that Cursed Gods are vulnerable to Muramasa’s Divine Power. 498 499
- Discovers that Vessel fragments absorb residual defilement and create replacement Cursed Gods immediately after purification. 535
- Recognizes the Dog God as the vengeful spirit dwelling within the Vessel. 536
Divine Sword Muramasa
- A katana-like Divine Sword enshrined in a stone at Tatsumi Shrine. 479
- Said to have been bestowed upon Hori by a god during the Warring States period, enabling its people to defeat yokai and repel invaders. 479
- Only those recognized by the sword can draw it; Azer is the first known person to succeed. 479 480
- Sends emotions and responses directly to Azer, including joy, goodwill, and a sense of perfect integration when he wields it. 480 482
- Functions as a countermeasure against spiritual entities, Cursed Gods, vengeful spirits, and other unnatural beings when empowered by Divine Power. 498 499
Relationships
- Azer — Her recognized master and the only wielder with sufficient compatibility to merge with Muramasa and safely retain Divine Power. Their relationship is marked by frequent bickering, mutual concern, and growing trust. 481 500 525
- Asatake Yoshino — Shrine Maiden of Tatsumi Shrine who can see Muramasa. Muramasa wants Azer to help with Yoshino’s family curse, even when Yoshino resists involving him. 482 483 486
- Hitachi Mako — Yoshino’s hereditary protector and an ally in the fight against Cursed Gods. Muramasa recognizes her connection to the Asatake family and works alongside her in the Vessel investigation. 494 534
- Asatake Anqing — Chief Priest of Tatsumi Shrine. He knows of Muramasa’s existence and respectfully regards her as Lady Muramasa, but cannot see or hear her directly. 490 498
- Rena — Becomes able to see Muramasa due to the influence of a Vessel fragment, initially mistaking her for a ghost. 537 538
- Dog God — The vengeful spirit within the Vessel has an implied ancient connection to Muramasa and the god of Hori, causing the Divine Sword’s spirit to react violently when it appears. 536
