"Did he really say that?"
After hearing Coulson's report, Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., was somewhat puzzled.
By all rights, their excavation of the secret base should have been flawless. Everyone who might have known about it had been drawn in by him. There was no way they could have exposed it themselves.
So what was going on with this Harry Osborn?
"He said he deduced it from anomalies in the power grid."
Power grid anomalies? That was complete bullshit.
On the surface, S.H.I.E.L.D. had dozens of legitimate organizations using the Osborn Group's power grid.
But those organizations were all lawful, properly registered entities. Their power consumption fully matched their registered information, and there was no way they would make such a basic mistake as abnormal power usage.
Once the electricity reached their facilities, it would be routed into their own grids. S.H.I.E.L.D. certainly would not be stupid enough to use Osborn Group equipment to monitor its own power grid.
In other words, the Osborn Group should not have known that all that electricity was ultimately converging on their Underground Base in New York.
Of course, that was under normal circumstances—unfortunately, Harry had Leining, a life-form composed of electrical energy.
As long as the electricity flowed out of Osborn's grid, Harry could sense where that current was going even without detection equipment.
After thinking for a long time, Nick still could not make sense of it.
"Did the report mention any technology related to this?" Nick asked as he opened his computer.
"No." Natasha answered.
"Then use our own generators for power. Be cautious."
It was a helpless measure. Supplying power with generators would sharply increase expenses, but Nick knew too little about this Osborn.
"Our recent operations have significantly increased the risk of exposure over there. Should we pull back the agents?"
Nick lowered his head in thought for a while, then shook it.
"This Harry Osborn is strange. We don't know his background. Keep him under surveillance at all times."
"But..."
"Besides, according to recent reports, even if the agents are exposed, they won't be in much danger. His intelligence is important. Work comes first."
With things put that way, Natasha could hardly argue further.
The surveillance of Harry began when Norman started developing the Human Enhancement serum. The original intent had been to monitor the Osborn Group, but the target gradually became Harry instead.
Norman's project was ultimately proven to lack practical value and was halted by the military. During that period, Nick Fury had even considered the possibility that Norman might inject himself with the stuff despite the risks, and had prepared numerous contingency plans for it.
Norman, however, showed no abnormalities. Instead, he discovered that Harry had become remarkably capable.
He had gone from an ordinary rich second-generation heir to a great inventor, and Nick still had no idea what had happened.
"Anyway, leave Harry Osborn as he is for now. Keep everything as it was."
"The problem now is Tony Stark."
Just this morning, a militant stronghold in the Gemira region had been destroyed by an unknown force, and the Air Force claimed to know nothing about it.
Meanwhile, an F-22 Raptor fighter jet had been shot down, and the Air Force claimed it was an exercise.
Nick had heard some rumors. The two incidents were very likely caused by the same thing—a new type of weapon.
"Not bad, Frank. How is Lisa recovering?" Harry said as he looked through the materials Frank had organized.
"Thank you for asking. She returned to school last week."
Frank smiled, then continued.
"Mr. Osborn, there's something I'm not sure I should say, but some of the training methods in the materials you gave me seem a little..."
"Ahead of their time?"
Frank nodded.
Frank's assessment was entirely correct. These were, of course, military materials far ahead of the era.
Whether Spartan warriors or Ironclads, they had originally been Super Soldiers created to deal with interstellar warfare, and every one of them was a legend. Viewing interstellar warfare from this era was like an army from a thousand years ago viewing modern warfare.
However, in Harry's judgment, Frank had completed his task well, organizing the materials according to real-world conditions.
"It's understandable that you think these are too far ahead of their time, but starting today, I hope you'll take these materials seriously."
As he spoke, Harry stood and pulled a large-caliber pistol from his waist.
By instinct, Frank's muscles tensed, but then he saw Harry aim the gun at his own palm—
Under Frank's shocked gaze, Harry fired at his own hand!
Bang!
Frank was astonished to discover that the bullet had not passed through Harry's hand!
Harry slowly opened his palm. Although the pistol had left a dark bruise in the center of it, it was clear that this was the full extent of the bullet's damage to Harry...
After the Bio-modification surgery, Harry's bones had become indestructible.
"What... what is that?"
"We'll need a force like this in the future." Harry stepped forward and lightly patted Frank on the shoulder.
"But who's the enemy?"
"The enemy is the enemy. Did you ask that question when you were serving in the military? Didn't your instructor teach you better?"
Frank stiffened. Though Harry hadn't explained what was going on, he could more or less guess something from the combat materials.
In any case, it definitely wasn't one of the Third World countries he had invaded before.
Just then, Harry's phone rang. He waved a hand, telling Frank to leave first.
It was Tony.
"Osborn Kid, you lost this time."
Listening to Tony on the other end of the line, Harry shook his head helplessly.
He knew what Tony meant—Tony had blown up Gemira.
Before setting off to deal with Gemira, Tony had called Harry: "Want another match, kid?"
He had sounded rather like a cowboy from the Wild West.
Naturally, Harry had turned him down. The Green Goblin glider had yet to be fitted with suitable weapons. If he really went, he could only solve the problem with his fists.
Though tearing apart a tank with the aid of an exoskeleton wouldn't be too difficult for him, he had no interest in that.
"Did I ever say I was competing with you over that? Did I? Mr. Stark, that's just a moral victory."
"I don't care. You lost." Tony seemed to be taking off the Mark armor on the other end of the call, accompanied by clanking noises.
"Mr. Stark, I don't object to you making up for your mistakes, but what's the point of blowing up one or two camps?"
"So what do you suggest? I heard your father is planning to run for Governor of New York. You want me to help canvass votes, right?"
"Yes, so will you do me that favor?" Harry admitted it openly, which made Stark somewhat unaccustomed to it.
Tony had a tremendous influence on young people, especially after admitting that he was Iron Man.
If Tony could support him once, then naturally he could support him a second time—during the presidential election.
"...I'll think about it. Gotta go, Pepper's here. I need to hang up."
Leaning back in his chair, Harry knew Obadiah was about to make his move. It was time to offer help when it mattered most.
But he still hadn't sorted out the Green Goblin glider's weapons.
Did he really have to go tear apart that tin can with his bare hands?
