Background / History

Thor is Odin's son and the Crown Prince of Asgard. His reckless actions contribute to conflict with the Frost Giants, after which Odin strips him of his power and sends him to Earth as a trial. Deprived of Mjolnir and deeply shaken by his failures, Thor is initially held by S.H.I.E.L.D. after attempting to reclaim the hammer. 93 94 95

While powerless on Earth, Thor lives near Jane Foster and assists her scientific team, including preparing breakfast and sharing his theory of the Nine Realms. He also seeks the return of Jane's confiscated research equipment. 97 98

When Loki sends the Destroyer to kill him, Thor initially intends to fight alongside Sif and the Warriors Three despite his mortal state. After accepting responsibility for the danger created by his past actions, he regains Mjolnir and his divine power, returning to the battle in time to destroy the destabilized Destroyer. 99 101

Thor later defends Earth against Mephisto, rejecting the Lord of Hell's attempts to exploit his guilt over Asgard's troubles. Though Mephisto's true form reveals a level of power beyond Thor's own, Thor refuses to compromise with an enemy of Asgard and Earth. 106 107

Following Odin's death and the destruction of Asgard during Ragnarok, Thor leads 500,000 Asgardian refugees to Earth. They settle in Hawaii near Luna's Tree of Life, though Thor later considers leaving Earth after conflict with the Heavenly Hammer Bureau reveals the vulnerability of his people there. 365 370 389 394

Appearance

Thor is a physically imposing Asgardian warrior associated with Mjolnir, armor, and lightning. During his time on Sakaar, he is forcibly given a shaved head as part of his transformation into a gladiator. 344

  • Wields Mjolnir for most of his recorded history. 93 101
  • Typically identified by his thunder-based powers and Asgardian bearing. 95 106
  • Has blond hair prior to being shaved on Sakaar. 344
  • Is later depicted fighting effectively without Mjolnir. 346

Personality

Thor begins as proud, impulsive, and accustomed to solving problems through force. His exile forces him to confront the consequences of his recklessness, particularly the danger he brought upon Asgard. 94 99

After regaining his power, he becomes more restrained and willing to think strategically. He refuses Mephisto's intimidation, proposes a plan to lure Malekith into a vulnerable position, and seeks Lu Yifang's help when he knows his own strength is insufficient. 106 262

Thor is intensely loyal to family and comrades. He protects Loki even while opposing his crimes, welcomes him back during Asgard's destruction, and remains devoted to Jane despite the strain created by his duties. 167 255 365

His judgment can remain naïve, particularly regarding Earth’s political hostility toward Asgardians. Loki recognizes that Thor possesses a king's strength and leadership but lacks his brother's foresight. 389
