Origin and Nature

Cursed Spirits form when Cursed Energy leaked by ordinary people accumulates and manifests as curses. Jujutsu Sorcerers generally control their Cursed Energy and therefore do not contribute to this process in the same way. 2 23 38 94

• Shared fear can create especially powerful spirits, including curses based on urban legends, famous yokai, and natural disasters. 2
• Spirits born from collective fear of the earth, forests, and ocean include Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon respectively. 5
• A curse may form from humanity's fear and hatred of humanity itself, as exemplified by Mahito. 5

Physiology

Cursed Spirits are beings composed of Cursed Energy rather than conventional flesh-and-blood organisms.

• Ordinary people cannot normally see them unless they possess talent for jujutsu. 10
• They do not require metabolism and can recover from lost limbs or severe bodily damage more readily than humans. 19
• Their bodies are inherently reinforced by Cursed Energy; without such reinforcement, both spirits and sorcerers are comparatively fragile. 15
• Cursed Spirit souls are more resilient to alteration than human souls, whose changes carry a greater risk of severe aftereffects. 23
• They are fundamentally creatures of negative energy. Positive Energy and Reverse Cursed Technique are normally fatal weaknesses. 19 104

Incarnation and Half-Cursed Spirits

Cursed Spirits ordinarily have no reason to incarnate into a human Vessel. Some exceptions seek a physical body to overcome the limitations of their negative-energy existence. 7 8

• Flesh can contain Positive Energy, which ordinary Cursed Spirits cannot produce. 19
• A specially prepared Vessel can be modified to match a particular spirit's Cursed Energy and allow near-perfect possession. 7
• The Half-Cursed Spirit state combines a spirit's nature with a physical body, permitting Reverse Cursed Technique and reducing the species' vulnerability to Positive Energy. 8 70 104

Most Cursed Spirits are instinct-driven and incapable of meaningful cooperation; even packs tend to attack as disorganized hordes. 3 9 19

Intelligent Cursed Spirits represent a major deviation from this norm.

• They can speak, form alliances with Curse Users, use strategy, and pursue long-term goals. 3 12 33
• Their emergence prompted Jujutsu Society to treat them as an unprecedented threat. 3 4
• Enormous Cursed Energy is associated with the emergence of intelligence, as seen in the Special Grade spirits Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon. 5
• Mahito's research suggests that a “legend” or established prototype may also help a spirit gather directional residual Cursed Energy and develop intelligence. 40 103

Imaginary Vengeful Spirits

Imaginary Vengeful Spirits are a rare category with a defined prototype from birth and powers corresponding to that prototype. 41

Cursed Energy Constitution

A Cursed Spirit's body is made of Cursed Energy, granting supernatural physical qualities and resistance to conventional injury.

• Natural Cursed Energy reinforcement gives spirits an advantage over unreinforced humans. 15
• Powerful spirits can regenerate substantial bodily damage, though their regeneration is not limitless. 27
• Their Cursed Energy can be sensed by trained sorcerers, while their physical forms may remain invisible to ordinary people. 10

Cursed Spirits may possess unique techniques tied to their nature or individual development.

• Natural-disaster spirits can manifest abilities related to their originating fear, such as Jogo's flames, Hanami's plant-based techniques, and Dagon's water manipulation. 2 96
• Dagon can fly passively, manipulate water, and create aquatic shikigami. 96
