Background

The Sharingan is associated with the Uchiha bloodline and is recognized by its crimson iris and rotating tomoe. Uchiha Yu inherited it through her father, an Uchiha Chunin who died on a mission. Her Sharingan first reacted to news of his sacrifice and fully awakened when she turned six. 8

Yu concealed her dual-eye inheritance because her left eye had awakened as a Byakugan from her mother’s bloodline. She used a contact lens to hide the Byakugan, while her Sharingan remained in her right eye. 8

The Uchiha ancestral stone tablet records the Sharingan’s advancement path. Only users who have awakened the eye can read it, and stronger Sharingan wielders perceive more of its contents. Yu learned from it about the Mangekyo Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, and Rinnegan, as well as the existence of Kaguya Otsutsuki. 48

Haku's Transplanted Sharingan

Haku obtained Uchiha Yu’s Sharingan after losing vision in one eye. Before transplanting it, he had the System purify the eye and chose to reset it to an unawakened state rather than pay 10,000 Energy Points to preserve its prior Three Tomoe level. The process created a Sharingan integrated into Haku’s own bloodline and severed its connection to Otsutsuki Hamura and Hagoromo. 39

Orochimaru performed the transplant and monitored Haku as an experimental subject. Ordinary non-Uchiha recipients were known to suffer either severe chakra drain or personality changes caused by the Sharingan’s negative emotions; Haku’s processed eye initially avoided those costs. 40

Resetting the eye removed its normal route of advancement through emotional stimulation. Haku instead had to nurture it with chakra for a year or spend 50 Energy Points to awaken it. Although the System removed the eye’s direct mental corruption, later surges of Sharingan pupil power still intensified Haku’s anger and nearly destabilized him. 40 84

The transplanted eye retained a weakened connection to Yu, allowing Haku to determine that she was alive and feel the direction of her location. Haku and Yu later agree to use their eyes to exchange simple messages while avoiding more traceable forms of contact. 40 47 49

Appearance

When activated, the Sharingan turns the user’s iris crimson and manifests black tomoe that rotate within it. 8 41

Evolution and Higher Forms

The stone tablet states that Sharingan advancement requires massive spiritual energy. Intense emotional fluctuations can temporarily elevate spiritual energy beyond the necessary threshold, causing the eye to evolve and then return matching spiritual power to its wielder. 80

• Mangekyo Sharingan — An incomplete form that gradually loses ocular power and ultimately causes blindness without a same-origin source to remedy its defect. 80
• Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan — Formed by fusing two same-origin Mangekyo Sharingan; described as a “reflective eye” capable of turning a wielder’s deepest subconscious desires into reality. 80

Post-Transformation Retention

After Haku’s later transformation, he can no longer visibly activate his Mangekyo Sharingan. Its abilities remain available through concentration and become instinctual rather than dependent on active ocular manifestation. 148
