"Hiss~"
I subconsciously wiped at nonexistent drool. The glucose I'd just swallowed seemed to vanish in an instant, making me glance again at that bag of snacks.
The next second... my mind started wandering again, thinking... if this were a movie or anime... someone would definitely be cracking a joke about 'The Bite of the Apocalypse...'
But I couldn't let my guard down, because in this room, there were actually three zombies!!
These three zombies, back when they were still human, must have grabbed these snacks and hidden in here, yet still failed to escape their fate. My eyes greedily fixed on the food in the corner.
I rubbed my stomach with my hand, stuck out my tongue, and licked my dry, cracked lips...
"Screw it!"
As the saying goes, men die for wealth, birds die for food!
Today! I'm going to be a bird-man!!
Was that too weird a way to put it?
While my mind was running wild, I pulled out my pistol... After all, I didn't have the confidence to face three zombies head-on!
At long range, maybe I'd miss, but at one or two meters, even an idiot couldn't miss, right?
I checked again—the safety was off... It seemed that fight where I almost died because I forgot to release the safety had given me a psychological scar...
Gripping the gun tightly, I looked at the three zombies, all far from the door, and counted silently in my head...
"3...2...1!!!"
I yanked the door open, and the next second, all three zombies turned their heads to look at me at the same time. Their blood-red, rabbit-like eyes made my whole body shudder, a chill surging up from the depths of my heart!
But there was no time to hesitate. If I was going to do this, then this was the life-or-death play!
"ROAR!!"
The three zombies roared almost simultaneously. At the same time, I raised my gun, aimed at the nearest zombie, and pulled the trigger!
"BANG!!"
A sharp crack rang out. I felt a massive force slam into my wrist. If I hadn't braced myself, that one shot would have dislocated it!
And to my delight, my talent really wasn't bad—at least when it came to shooting a pistol, my first shot hit the head dead-on... That must be from years of 'practicing my aim,' right?
Now wasn't the time for random thoughts!
Just then, the other two zombies charged. I dodged to the side, and with a "thud," slammed the door shut again, pressing my back hard against it!
"THUD!" Another dull impact. One of the zombies rammed straight into the door, nearly sending me flying!
"Tch! That's a lot of strength!"
But before I could adjust to the force, the other zombie slammed into it too!
"THUD!!"
My feet slipped, and I almost fell. Gritting my teeth, I held the door steady, raised my pistol, and through the window, I locked eyes with one of the zombies. Its eyes were bloodshot, that crimson gaze fixed on me!
"THUD! THUD! THUD!"
The two zombies inside kept slamming into the door, letting out low growls as they did, but...
"Heh... go to hell!!"
Aiming right at those two eyes glaring at me, I pulled the trigger!
"BANG!"
Another one down! This time it was much simpler!
I holstered the pistol and pulled out the ten-centimeter fruit knife. After all, bullets were a finite resource—one shot, one less.
One shot, and it's not some milky-white liquid that'll be back tomorrow after tonight's work...
Cough... I'm getting sidetracked again.
I shifted my position, keeping a sharp eye on the zombie above that was staring out through the broken window, then I moved to take cover by the side of the door, my hand already resting on the lock.
The zombie inside was slamming against the door in steady thuds. From the looks of it, this zombie had almost no intelligence at all.
Feeling the rhythmic impacts against the door, I timed the intervals in my mind!
"Thud! Thud! Thud!"
"Right now!!!"
I muttered under my breath, twisting the lock sharply! At that exact moment, the zombie lunged toward the now-unlocked door!
"Thump!!"
With the door's resistance gone and the zombie still charging mindlessly, it burst straight out of the doorway, twisting its head at an almost 180-degree angle to lock onto me by the side!
"Hiss!!"
That gaze, that obsession—it was utterly terrifying!
But... I had no time to hesitate now. Once the zombie regained its balance and lunged at me, its immense strength would be something I couldn't withstand!
But for now... the zombie had completely lost its footing, slamming headfirst into the opposite wall!
"Thud!!"
At the same time, I dashed over, straddling the zombie's back, the fruit knife already ready in my hand, and stabbed down hard!
"Shluck!!"
The fruit knife sank to the hilt, and beneath me, the zombie convulsed violently before the hallway fell silent again...
Staring at the motionless monster under me, I broke out in a cold sweat. Taking risks like this wasn't my style, but the lure of food forced me to seek fortune in danger...
Though, those few sausages weren't exactly a fortune—at best, they were just a snack.
With a "shluck," I pulled the fruit knife out, wiped the oddly colored blood off on the zombie's clothes, tucked it back at my waist, stood up, brushed the dust off myself, and walked straight into the room to grab the whole bag of snacks.
Without a second thought, I tore open a pack of sausages and wolfed them down!
In an apocalypse like this, still being able to eat sausages... I guess I'm lucky, right?
I thought to myself as I ate something I'd long grown tired of before.
A meal? Really just two sausages—after all, I needed to save the rest for later. I didn't want to starve to death.
I packed whatever else I could carry, tore open the bag of chips, crushed them, and stuffed them into the small ladies' crossbody bag.
Patting the bulging little bag, I nodded in satisfaction. After a moment's thought, I pulled out the pistol and headed for the end of the hallway, toward the emergency stairwell.
But... when I reached the emergency stairs, I still felt uneasy, so I drew the fruit knife again. Left hand holding the knife, right hand holding the gun, I gently pushed open the iron door.
A "creaaaaak~" echoed through the silent hallway. Knife in left hand, gun in right, all I was missing was a grenade clenched between my teeth.
The hallway was dead quiet, which made even the faintest sounds amplify infinitely, so the noise of the door opening was especially clear.
My nerves were stretched taut. What came into view was a brightly lit staircase—the city hospital had good natural lighting, though scattered bloodstains still dotted the corridor.
and clutter, but overall it looked much cleaner than the hallway on this floor.
I took cautious steps, resting the pistol on my left wrist. Those two shots had given me a sense of the gun's power. Although my strength had increased considerably, it was still good to make things easier on myself. Besides, this pose... pretty cool, right?
I teased myself inwardly as I entered the stairwell. I didn't find anything, but I was careful enough to check behind the door—this kind of plot point shows up all the time in novels and movies, so I made a point of checking the doorway. Finding nothing, I finally let out a breath and instinctively loosened my waistband with my fingers...
"Too tight..."
It wasn't that my waist was too tight—it was my ass. Every step felt awkward, and the waist was too loose, sagging. But at least these were jeans, so my hip bones could hold them up. Otherwise, wouldn't they just fall off?
Letting out a slight sigh, I looked up and down. The stairwell was fairly spacious. Left led down, right led up.
There was no hesitation. I took a deep breath, refocused my attention, and headed toward the stairs on the left.
The stairwell was quiet, and there were windows here, letting me see bright sunlight.
With light, a lot of the fear in your heart gets driven away. Most of the time, people are just scaring themselves.
There was basically nothing in my way. Even if there was, it was just some bags or clutter. But I didn't get off easy either—
