The glucose bag was thin and packed full; the moment I cut it open, some of it spilled away, but at this point I had no mind to fuss over such a small loss. Being alive still—that should count as my greatest fortune.
Like a starving female beast, I lapped at the glucose liquid. When I felt my body beginning to recover, I tore open the ham sausage and instant noodles, chewing them dry, washing them down with the glucose, finally filling my stomach.
Letting out a sigh, I pulled out the lighter and gently flicked the flint wheel.
Shhh... shhh... shhh!
Three strikes before it barely caught. My fingers were so weak—this must be the aftermath of that state. No... it should be that the state had consumed too much.
As I thought this, I looked downward, and what I saw nearly scared my three souls and six spirits right out of me. At the turn on the entire sixth floor, over twenty corpses lay there, their bodies charred black, stretching from the corner all the way to the Iron Gate on the sixth floor. The whole flight of stairs was covered in blackened corpses. But what made cold sweat pour down my back was the one whose hand was almost resting on the top of my shoe!
"So close... just a little closer, and I'd have died here!"
After all... I didn't know if I was immune to the Zombie's toxin. Even if I'd come back to life, that didn't mean I was immune.
My strength somewhat restored, I pulled out the Changbai Mountain, shook out a cigarette, lit it, and put the lighter away. In the dark stairwell, only the orange glow of my cigarette smoldered.
Leaning against the cold wall, I drew a mouthful of harsh smoke into my lungs and slowly exhaled. I felt my body had recovered a fair amount of strength. This current body did bring quite a bit of convenience—at least relatively speaking... if it had been the old me, that situation just now would have basically been a death sentence.
But then again, if it had been the old me, I would have considered other methods instead of fighting head-on.
The orange light slowly rose in the stairwell, and I could faintly make out some of the situation below. After a moment's thought, I forced myself upright, slung my backpack on, left the trash bags behind, and, gripping the stainless steel railing, slowly made my way down. Corpses were everywhere underfoot, and stepping on them made sounds like...
Crack... squelch...—disgusting noises. But I had no choice but to endure that sickening feeling and walk down over the pile of bodies!
Just as I reached the middle, suddenly!
Caw...
A strange cry—my foot was grabbed!!
There was still a live one!!!
I'd let my guard down!!!
My strength, already not fully recovered, combined with the unstable balance from stepping on corpses, sent me tumbling instantly!
"Ah!" In an instant, the world spun. Luckily, my backpack and the corpses on the ground cushioned the impact of my fall, or I'd have been hurt badly. At the same time, I clearly felt the hand on my foot still gripping my calf tightly!!
It had rolled down with me!!
My head was still dazed, but the Zombie lunged at me!!
"Ah!!!"
I desperately raised my arms to block its body, a foul stench flooding my nostrils. In the darkness, by the faint moonlight, the Zombie—missing half its face, one entire eyeball hanging out, completely skinless—stared at me with a charred expression. The crimson in its eyes sent a chill of dread through me!
Clack! Clack! Clack!
The Zombie opened its mouth, madly trying to bite me. That gaping maw had completely torn its cheeks apart, its whole face split open wide enough to fit two of something inside.
Fist!!
"Go to hell!!"
In an instant, I jolted awake, instinctively yanking the military knife from my waist. My left hand braced against the zombie's neck, my right hand gripping the knife as I drove it straight up through the zombie's chin in one clean thrust!
"Ptoo!"
Black blood trickled slowly down the blade, and the zombie on top of me, after a few convulsions, went still.
"Ugh!!"
I shoved the now thoroughly dead zombie aside with all my strength. Though I had little energy left, I didn't want that blood sticking to me—after all, I had no idea whether skin contact with that disgusting fluid could transmit the virus or something.
"Huff! Huff! Huff!"
I gasped for air, the stamina I hadn't yet fully recovered now drained once more. Left with no choice, I lay back on the cold backpack to rest.
After a long moment, I barely managed to push myself up from the ground and stand slowly.
"Huff... Care... careless." My breathing still wasn't steady, but I didn't want to stay here another second. Even though all the zombies in the corridor were dead, I couldn't verify every single one...
I admit it—I was scared. But then again, how many people wouldn't be afraid of these things?
Having fallen down the stairs, I was now right outside the Iron Gate on the sixth floor. The moment I got a clear look at the gate, my brow furrowed tightly...
"The door is open!"
Instinctively, I held the military knife at the ready. In the darkness, this blade gave me a sliver of reassurance, even though I barely had the strength left to swing it anymore.
Just as I thought... she ran away.
"That **!!"
I cursed bitterly, but that didn't solve anything—it only let me vent a little frustration. I looked left and right. This floor had almost no patient rooms; above each door hung a laboratory number.
Right across from the Iron Gate, however, was a break room, apparently a place for staff to rest.
Through the break room's glass window, I could see beds inside, along with some daily necessities, and even a television. But in this world without electricity, that thing was worth less than trash.
I pulled the Iron Gate shut behind me. I needed rest... I didn't want to be eaten by a zombie in my sleep because of carelessness. Closing the Iron Gate was a precaution—even though the zombies in the stairwell had all been cleared, an extra layer of security gave me some peace of mind.
Chapter 19: Target! Home!
I pushed open the break room door. The beds were a mess, and a musty smell hung in the air. It looked like that mother and daughter had spent their days here; I guessed one of the nearby labs had been used as a bathroom?
But... speaking of bathrooms, why was it that after eating so much, I still hadn't felt the need to go? Out of habit, I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.
But... sometimes, things just couldn't stand being mentioned.
That urge to pee... it really came right on cue!
It was completely different from when I was still a guy. As for how it was different... well, it was just different somehow!
Who in their right mind would dwell on such perverted thoughts?
Still... thinking about it, this was my first time using this body's bathroom!
How frustrating...
However... a surge of urgency to urinate came flooding in. I didn't know how to describe it, but it was very different from when I was male. The sensation didn't seem to come from my little dick, but from the position of my lower abdomen.
Uh...
No choice. Gritting my teeth, I set my backpack down in the rest area, turned to look left and right, then walked into one of the inner laboratories. I didn't just yank the door open—even though I could barely hold it in, I remained extremely vigilant!
I gently patted the lab door.
"Tap tap..."
There was no sound, but I still knocked three more times. This time, the noise was a bit louder.
"BAM BAM BAM!"
No danger...
Letting out a breath of relief, I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Even though it felt awkward to take care of this business in such an empty lab, in a place like this, what more could I ask for?
