Chapter 44: Rainy Day
Around 5:15 PM, I had been driving for about five minutes and could already see the construction site ahead.
Across from the construction site was my home.
Sitting on the leather seats, the comfort was incredible. However... I was still a bit bothered by having hit that zombie just now. I parked the car on the side of the road.
I got out and walked to the front, finding only a slightly bent bumper and some chipped paint on the car body. Everything else was fine.
"As expected of German engineering... so sturdy."
Patting the hood, which made a 'thump' sound, I mused whether I should modify the car a bit. I couldn't do much else, but at least I could handle some basic bodywork and repainting.
"Maybe add a bull bar to the car?"
Getting back in the car, I looked up through the windshield at the sky, which had turned as black as the bottom of a pot. I wondered if I should head to the city hospital first to check out that helicopter.
It had been a month since the outbreak. Who would send a helicopter at a time like this?
Although I didn't know the model, I could tell it was military-grade. The Huaguo emblem on it was very conspicuous.
But what was their purpose?
I racked my brain, but I couldn't figure out why they would send a helicopter to the city hospital at this time.
Still... I'd find out tomorrow.
I just hoped things would go smoothly and I wouldn't encounter any more monsters.
I started the car, and the instant I did, a single drop of water landed on the windshield with a 'pat'.
"It's raining?"
Pressing the window control on the door, the car window slowly rolled down. The humidity in the air suddenly felt refreshing. Raindrops landed on the asphalt road on this summer day, drying unusually quickly.
It was hot inside the car, but I couldn't bring myself to turn on the air conditioning. Gasoline was precious now, at least... until I found a spare, I should save as much as I could.
I started the pickup truck again. As I drove faster, my neighborhood gradually came into view. The construction site opposite was still sealed off by a tall iron door.
In my estimation, there were at least dozens, if not hundreds, of zombies inside. The people who worked at the construction site had excellent physical condition, so the zombies they produced likely wouldn't be weak.
There might even be mutated monsters!
But thankfully, these monsters had their own territory. They probably wouldn't come to my neighborhood, right?
Honestly, ever since I got home, I'd been feeling lost. Should I find some survivors to live with, or build a fortress alone in my own home?
Both options had their pros and cons, and equally significant drawbacks.
If I looked ordinary, or was my old self, the first choice would definitely be to group up. That way, we could look out for each other if any problems arose. There's strength in numbers, as the saying goes.
But now... even though I used to have very high standards, having seen all sorts of uncensored "adult" pictures and "adult" movies that could be finished by just one or two people...
Anyway, I'd seen a lot. But anyone who could compare to me... honestly, besides using Photoshop and extreme makeup, I hadn't seen anyone on the internet who could...
The women could still put on makeup and dress up a bit to look less attractive, perhaps blending into the survivor groups, but now...
Even if I tried to hide it, I wouldn't be able to blend in. My current appearance is just too eye-catching. Moreover, I haven't learned how to use makeup. Even if I wanted to dress up to look less attractive, I couldn't...
So... if I found a survivor base like this, I'd have to guard not only against zombies but also against my fellow humans.
Conversely, if I were alone, the situation above wouldn't arise. However, surviving alone outside is extremely dangerous. Things that some teams can easily accomplish are difficult, or even impossible, for one person.
For me, this is a very difficult decision, so I haven't figured it out yet and can only take it one step at a time.
If it really doesn't work out... the choice of going alone would be more suitable for me.
The most crucial thing is... that 'extraordinary state' for reasons unknown. As long as I can use it skillfully and reduce some of its side effects, I can live quite well in this apocalypse alone, provided I don't court death.
Without realizing it, the car had driven downstairs. I parked the car by the roadside and turned off the engine.
I felt a bit lucky. After all, if it weren't for the rainy weather, the nearby zombies would have heard the car's engine to some extent and would have rushed over. But now, as the rain grew louder, the car's sound could no longer be heard.
"Heaven helps me..."
I reclined the car seat. I wasn't in a hurry for this minute anyway. I reached into my pocket and took out a Changbai Mountain cigarette. I flicked open my ZIPPO and took a satisfying drag. There was a small button on the lower left side of the seat; this car's seats and even the table were fully electric.
As soon as I leaned back, I stretched, and all the joints in my body felt as if they had gone soft.
"This car's sofa... is so comfortable..."
I felt a little sleepy. As I stretched, I happened to touch something on the back seat.
"Clack."
A very faint sound, but for me, any sound required vigilance!
I suddenly turned my head, and what appeared before my eyes... was a black hat.
A very common baseball cap.
"Phew... you scared me to death."
I reached out and picked up the hat. It looked quite high-class. I casually put it on my head, and only when I put it on did I realize that the top of the hat had some extra space?
"This is..."
I suddenly remembered the figure of the female zombie in the parking lot. Her hair seemed to be a little longer than mine. Could it be... that this hat could accommodate long hair?
Thinking about it, I tossed my head, swinging my long hair to the side. I grabbed it with my hand, and using the hat, I tucked my hair inside from bottom to top. Then, I put the hat on in one go!
The moment I put it on, I felt a cool sensation on the back of my neck. That was... the long-lost feeling of my skin being caressed by a gentle breeze.
"Finally... I've dealt with this long hair."
I still remember the first time I encountered a green monster; I almost died because my hair was grabbed. Today was good; I found many useful tools, and I even found a hat that could hide my hair.
And just then, suddenly... amidst the sound of rain in the distance, a strange sound was mixed in~
"Hissing hum~~ Hiss"
In an instant, a shiver ran through my body. I rolled over and sat up, immediately turning on the windshield wipers. Accompanied by the "smack~ smack~ smack~" of the wipers sweeping water stains back and forth on the windshield, I also saw clearly in the distance... the thing the sound was coming from.
"Helicopter!!"
Chapter Forty-Five: Missed?
"Hum~~~"
The helicopter's rapidly spinning propellers created a tremendous amount of noise. Even from the ground, I could clearly hear the sound the propellers made!
"Damn it!!"
I punched the handlebars. It was too late after all. But no matter what I did now, it was too late. The helicopter, accompanied by a "hum! hum! hum!" sound
