While these military bases appear numerous, relative to the vastness of Huaguo, there are only just over fifty survivor bases left. Furthermore, most of them don't even have populations exceeding ten thousand. Only a dozen or so military bases have populations exceeding ten thousand, with XZ having the largest at over a hundred thousand.
Presumably... the survivor bases in XZ are where the management class resides. When the chaos began, these people must have all fled to XZ for safety.
And the population base, simply put...
Establishing defense facilities requires... people, right?
Investigating and annihilating monsters and zombies also requires people.
And most crucially, development and reproduction require... still people.
Therefore, after initially stabilizing, these survivor bases immediately contacted the central government and reported their names, seeking national support.
So, you see...
"These people... even in the apocalypse, they're still working so hard to scheme... it must be exhausting..."
Why do I say that?
It's actually simple reasoning.
Among them... the most crucial are the ZF and the XZ survivor base.
These high-ranking ZF officials taking refuge in the XZ survivor base, even those at the very top of the nation, currently have no measures to manage or control these survivor bases. So... how can they gather popular support and bring these regions under their jurisdiction?
It's simple, just extend an olive branch.
And this olive branch is likely this piece of paper in my hand, right?
As long as these survivor bases want to develop, then... fine! You fall under my banner, I'll promote you, and I'll also invest a large amount of resources to gather popular support for the various survivor bases.
This move...
"Brilliant!"
Indeed... this move is truly brilliant.
For the ZF, for these military facilities they can't control and can only let be, the only brilliant move is this. It allows you to obediently come under my banner, and it lets all the survivors in the country know of the ZF's existence. Furthermore, it avoids directly supporting the survivor bases, thus preventing the emergence of warlord-like independent factions where "a general outside the command may not obey the emperor's orders."
This way, all the established survivor bases will be unable to resist the ZF, which has become an almost empty shell, because the public will not want to oppose the ZF. Moreover, this paper marks the most crucial element: the safety of the survivor bases.
If the country were to investigate each one individually, it's unlikely. They probably assess based on the reports submitted. So, why is only XZ marked with an S-class safety level? It's to tell all survivors that only where the ZF is located is the strongest.
Faced with this situation, no one except a lunatic would resist; they would only obediently be brought under control.
And those survivor bases that want to resist, or rather, want to be independent?
Then fine... Firstly, you won't be listed, the ZF won't promote you, and they can even criticize you. After all, in times like these, the leaders of survivor bases are like local emperors. It's impossible for dark dealings not to occur. Once these are exposed, your survivor base's reputation will significantly decrease, and survivors will choose to leave rather than go to such a place.
The second point is even simpler. The fact that the ZF can do something so bold proves they must still hold some trump cards and aren't afraid of you completely breaking away from their control. And this trump card is likely...
My finger traced the paper as I looked at the fifty-odd survivor bases, and a thought of the most powerful deterrent in the peaceful world entered my mind.
"Nuclear weapons!"
Chapter Forty-Eight: So Painful I Could Die
The heavy rain continued to fall all day. I sat by the windowsill, having not slept all night.
Why?
Because of the pain...
My stomach ached terribly all night, making me incredibly irritable. I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. With no other choice, I opened the curtains, sat on the windowsill, wrapped myself in the blanket, and watched the rain all night.
My mood calmed down considerably, but I was exhausted and my lower abdomen hurt more and more. The sticky, damp feeling down there was awful.
"Sigh..."
I let out a long sigh. After enduring this night, I finally understood a profound truth.
"Sanitary napkins... are truly a great invention."
Looking out at the still pouring rain, I knew nothing could be done today. With my weary body, I changed into a legendary sanitary napkin!
The piece of paper from yesterday lay on my bedside table. It contained information about monsters, what to watch out for, and how to deal with them. I had written it all down in my little notebook and put it in my solar backpack.
I casually grabbed a pack of instant noodles and ate them dry. I really didn't have the energy to cook right now. After being tormented all night by my period, all I wanted was to eat something and then get some good sleep.
It was strange, though. During the day, I felt a little better, perhaps because a night had passed and the pain had subsided with time.
I really had no experience with this sort of thing. Everything was a learning process from scratch. Alas... back before the apocalypse, I was just a pure gentleman...
Ahem.
Regardless of the past, my focus now was on how to survive. The information from that piece of paper, for example, was a timely lifesaver, regardless of what the so-called higher-ups thought.
Food...
Although I wasn't lacking at home, with enough to last another month, I couldn't just eat instant noodles every day, could I?
Weapons...
Perfect. I had a Type 64 pistol, and I was short on bullets. Now, the bullets had arrived.
In any case, I could only wait until tomorrow.
However, I had a nagging question in the back of my mind: the helicopter's arrival was very strange. Logically, the closest military base to my city was in SY. It took at least two to three hours to drive to the survivor base in SY, let alone after the apocalypse when there was virtually no hope of reaching it. Therefore, logically, this city shouldn't have been distributing flyers.
After all, it was too far. The number of people who could make it to the survivor base was probably less than one or two out of ten.
"The investment and the return don't match... It doesn't make sense?"
I mumbled to myself, considering every possibility, but I couldn't figure it out before I fell asleep...
Another entire day passed.
Perhaps it was due to the menstrual cramps, but I slept the whole day, from the morning of the 12th until the early morning of the 13th.
At this moment, the heavy rain outside had turned into a light drizzle, pattering on the ground and forming a small stream that flowed along the curbs on either side of the street into the gutters.
Groggily, I got up. After sitting up, I looked at the two lumps on my chest and touched my still faintly aching lower abdomen. I sighed and then sat up. The first thing I looked at was the parking spot outside the window.
My vehicles were still parked outside. The pickup truck and the Yamaha sat there quietly, with a few scattered groups gathering around.
some zombies, perhaps because of the death of that mutated monster. Since the night before last, I've seen a few stray figures here and there.
I glanced down at my watch. It's a good thing, a Longines ladies' watch, and a purely mechanical one at that. It doesn't need any maintenance, and it's absolutely fine with water.
However, it can only display the date and not the month, which is quite awkward. It seems I should get an electronic watch or an electronic clock. As for power... solar panels should work.
Sitting on the windowsill, I waited to see what would happen today. Since that helicopter said three days, if I include the 11th, then it should be the 13th. If I don't include the 11th, then it should be the 14th.
Who knows if they'll count the 11th? So today, I plan to sit on the windowsill and wait. I imagine when they drop supplies, there will be some kind of marker or notification, right?
