Bai Chi nodded and sat beside me, sipping the wine brewed in this little village with a puzzled look on his face.
They made wine from fruit here. It was sweet and tasted pretty good, and it seemed to have a fairly high alcohol content, too.
I picked up my wine bowl and took a sip of the pale yellow drink. As I watched everyone around me start cleaning up the bonfire, a wave of doubt washed over me.
This village was a little too harmonious. So harmonious that it was hard to believe it was a place where people could live.
No couples, no old women, no fighting. From beginning to end, everyone here had been exceedingly polite to everyone else. This
kind of thing... I'd never seen anything like it.
Another thing: maybe it was just my imagination, but there seemed to be only half as many women as men in this village. That
wasn't really surprising. Before the apocalypse,
the gender ratio had already been severely skewed. And after the apocalypse, women had a much harder time surviving. They had to deal not only with
zombies, but also with the abuse of Mutant Monsters,
so it wasn't strange that their numbers had plummeted.
At least, everywhere I'd been, the ratio of men to women had been severely skewed. There were at least two or three times as many men
as women.
And it was about the same here.
But something still felt wrong.
"How are you two finding it?"
I didn't know when Guo Aoliang had come over. Holding a wine bowl, he looked at us and asked with a broad smile.
"Pretty good. The wine's good, and the surroundings are nice, too. It's rare to find such a harmonious place in the apocalypse."
I smiled and
