Background
A military notice adopts the name “zombies” for living corpses that can move and spread the virus 47. Early encounters include visibly decayed individuals in the hospital and people Fang Yuxuan recognizes after their transformation, including neighbors Grandpa Li and Big Brother Liu 15 26.
Over time, Fang questions whether the evolved population should still be called corpses: she observes that they have blood, maintain body temperature, can become dormant, and remain active after severe bodily damage 227. She later emphasizes that, despite their increasingly humanlike activity and intelligence, they were reanimated after death rather than cured or surviving humans 605.
Appearance
Zombies generally retain a human shape, though their condition varies with their evolution and injuries 223 605.
- Early stage: Severe decay, sometimes with recognizable clothing and facial features 15 26 223.
- Later stage: Gray-blue or deep blue-green skin, dark exposed facial musculature, little visible fat, and prominent veins 96 223 605.
- Eyes and blood: Scarlet eyes are repeatedly observed; their blood is described as dark or black in combat 23 61 596.
- Individual changes: An examined female zombie has four prominent fangs and sharper remaining teeth 684.
Abilities & Behavior
Persistence and vulnerabilities
- Zombies can keep moving after losing internal organs, limbs, or their lower bodies. Destroying or removing the head stops them 26 688.
- A severed arm may slow a zombie without preventing it from trying to bite 83.
- Later zombies have strengthened bones, though Fang can still cut through them with her electrically charged Mo Dao 688.
Senses and group movement
- Zombies pursue moving people and are drawn by sounds such as an engine or another zombie's roar 23 69.
- They respond strongly to blood and flesh; a bloodstained scrap causes a group to fight over it 53 63.
- Roars attract nearby zombies. Later groups also surround targets and cooperate to overcome obstacles 83 426 687 688.
Infection
- Bites can turn people into zombies; one bitten soldier kills himself to prevent that outcome 1220.
- In a later outbreak, Wild Wolf says a bitten person must receive a vaccine within five minutes or the transformation becomes irreversible. He also warns that corrosive zombie blood can infect through damaged skin, and that the virus affects evolved people and mutants 1127.
- Infection may activate mutant traits in a host, producing a mutated monster rather than an ordinary zombie 1127.
Variants and Related Creatures
- Rioters: Described as evolved zombies with greater speed, strength, and activity; they may lead hordes 176 597.
- Flying zombies: Attack Luoyang while carrying heavy stones 1220.
- Walking corpses: Later enemies include the corpses of powerful mutants, retaining varied abilities. One four-star walking corpse overpowers Fang in a direct clash 1352 1362.
- Blue-gel-controlled corpse: A speaking corpse identifies itself and others like it as viruses. Fang has Tuanzi consume it after discovering the blue gel-like substance associated with such moving corpses 1345 1355.
Major Horde Encounters
- At the JN Military Region, a tide numbering in the hundreds of thousands forces Fang and other survivors to flee a village 596 597.
- A later migration heads toward Luoyang; the approaching force is described as numbering in the hundreds of millions and includes mutated monsters alongside zombies 1217 1218 1219.
