• Early conflicts: Magic Runes originated with the Demon Race. During the Dragon Race's rule, demons rebelled, massacred other peoples, and conducted a blood sacrifice. The dragons subsequently hunted them across the world 11.
• Four centuries of rule: After a plague devastated the dragons, the Demon Race seized power. Its rule lasted four hundred years and saw widespread enslavement, destruction of books, and the slaughter of dragons 11 311 658.
• Human counterattack: Human forces united with other factions and expelled the Demon Race. Later, in the Fourth Epoch, the hero Lance destroyed teleportation gates used for troop movements and broke into the Demon Race's royal palace 315 658.
• Fifth Epoch conflicts: The Demon Race infiltrates other powers, supports rebellions, and fights the Northern Alliance. Its campaigns include an assault on Dwarf Island and involvement in the Dragonborn rebellion 311 345 669.

The account of who ruled the Demon Race remains contested. Historical records identify the Blood Race as its former royal family, while Yuffie's dream depicts a Blood Race ruler betrayed and ordinary demons subsequently enslaved. Lynn and Yuffie conclude that the present nobles may not be the same people as the ancient rulers, but their investigation does not establish a complete replacement history 345 690 691.

Composition and Hierarchy

• Diverse membership: The Demon Race is explicitly described as not a single race. Its forces have included succubi, Pigfolk, Merfolk, Fire Devils, and ordinary demons 314 368.
• Ordinary demons: A populous group used as basic soldiers. Captured members tell Lynn that they retain only a legend of a dead “true king,” whose identity they no longer know 593 690.
• Blood Race: Presented in ancient records as the Demon Race's royal family. A First Epoch image shows a Blood Race girl presiding over a disciplined military parade 314 345.
• Present nobility: The Abyss Race has disguised itself as Demon Race nobles. Leon distinguishes these rulers from the demons serving beneath them 368.
• Unequal status: Arthur Wellington's Black Winged people rank below the Serpent Race but above succubi; he describes the Demon Race's constituent peoples as effectively subject to its nobles 723.

Appearance

There is no single Demon Race appearance: its constituent peoples have markedly different forms 368 417.

• Ordinary demons can resemble humans apart from horns and tails 593.
• Some demons depicted in a First Epoch parade have pointed ears and horns but no tails 314.
• Black Winged people have jet-black wings; Fire Devils are distinguished in the parade account by fiery red eyes 314 723.
