Background

Sasori was a Sunagakure prodigy and the grandson of Elder Chiyo. After his parents were killed in the Third Shinobi World War by Hatake Sakumo, he gradually embraced an extreme path. He eventually murdered the Third Kazekage, turned the body into a Human Puppet, and defected from Sunagakure. 43

By the time of the Akatsuki mission against Hyuga Chiba, Sasori had modified his own body into a Human Puppet. Though over thirty years old, his true form retained the appearance of a short red-haired youth. 46

Pain assigned Sasori and Deidara to recruit Chiba into Akatsuki or kill him and retrieve the Tenseigan. Sasori accepted the operation while remaining suspicious of the accompanying Akatsuki intern, Tobi. 16 41 42

He is prideful, calculating, and contemptuous of submission. Even after recognizing Chiba’s overwhelming strength, he refuses Chiba’s offer to work for him and attempts to escape rather than be controlled. 47 Sasori is also wary of hidden motives; he questions Tobi’s sudden involvement in the mission and later recognizes that Tobi’s foolish behavior was a disguise. 41 47

After news of Chiba’s Tenseigan reaches Akatsuki, Pain dispatches Sasori and Deidara to recruit him or take his eyes by force. Sasori travels with Deidara and Tobi toward Sunagakure, arguing with Deidara over art while questioning Tobi’s motives. 16 41 42

Return to Sunagakure

Sasori confronts Rasa outside Sunagakure. He deploys the Third Kazekage Puppet and Iron Sand against Rasa’s Gold Sand, but his remaining Human Puppets are steadily destroyed and his defeat becomes increasingly likely. 43 46

Conversion into a Tenseigan Puppet

Chiba intervenes in Sasori’s battle with Rasa, repelling Sasori’s attacks with Shinra Tensei. When Sasori refuses recruitment, Chiba takes over the Third Kazekage Puppet and then forcibly converts Sasori himself into a Tenseigan Puppet. Sasori experiences fear as his body and autonomy are taken from him. 47

Battle with Obito

Under Chiba’s influence, Sasori joins Rasa and Deidara in opposing Obito. He uses a Sand Clone to evade Obito’s attempted capture and later assists in the combined assault that forces Obito to retreat through Izanagi and Kamui. 48 50

Fourth Shinobi World War Declaration

When Chiba declares war on the villages possessing tailed beasts, Sasori calls the decision “even crazier than the Akatsuki.” He nevertheless remains among Chiba’s forces. 51
