Background / History
Sunagakure hosted the Chunin Exams during the tenure of the Third Kazekage. To secure a favorable result on home ground, he entered Karura into the examinations under a ninja identity, relying on her sand-manipulation Kekkei Genkai and automatic defensive sand shield. 36
Before the Third Great Ninja War, the Third Kazekage disappeared while traveling near the Land of Rivers to recruit the small Red Eye Clan. Sunagakure initially claimed that he was in seclusion for training, but its explanations became inconsistent as the absence continued and rumors spread that he had died. 93 118 138
The Third Raikage exploited the resulting instability by leading an elite Kumogakure force into the Land of Wind. During the crisis, Jonin Rasa rallied Sunagakure’s defenses with Magnet Release and sand-iron, gaining the public backing of elders Chiyo and Ebizo before becoming the Fourth Kazekage. Both Sunagakure and Kumogakure publicly claimed victory in the confrontation. 121
Leadership and Political Situation
- Rasa, Fourth Kazekage — Rose to power during the leadership crisis through his Magnet Release, battlefield leadership, and the support of Chiyo and Ebizo. His new administration sought a military success to consolidate its authority. 121 158
- Chiyo — Senior elder and major military adviser. She advocated an immediate response after Konoha’s advance toward the southwestern border disrupted Sunagakure’s planned offensive. 134
- Ebizo — Senior elder who supported Rasa’s appointment and commanded an elite assault force against Konoha’s medical logistics unit. 121 138
- Wenzhong Suoxunyu — Adviser who provided Rasa with intelligence on other villages’ preparations and encouraged a defensive reorganization after the failure at Kikyo Mountain. 158
Sunagakure’s military and economic position is constrained by the barren Land of Wind and scarce resources; its overall strength is described as the lowest among the Five Great Ninja Villages. Its planned war against Konoha aimed to seize the fertile Land of Fire’s borderlands and resources while using the Third Kazekage’s disappearance to unite the village against an external enemy. 121 158 163
Military Assets
- Magnet Release — Rasa controls golden sand-iron for large-scale offense and defense, including the Magnet Release: Sand Gold Great Wall, which blocked a massive fire attack at Kikyo Mountain. 121 153
- Puppet and poison units — Puppet forces and poison techniques were among Sunagakure’s principal assets during its assault on Kikyo Mountain. 158
- Pakura — An elite combatant possessing both Scorch Release and Swift Release; she led or pursued with a major elite force during the war. 146 157
- Bunpuku — The One-Tail jinchuriki monk stationed at Sunagakure’s main camp. 148
- Red Eye Clan — A small border clan compelled into Sunagakure’s war machine after its ocular Kekkei Genkai was discovered. The Red Eye can perceive at long range, see through obstacles, and generate false images and Chakra signatures that disrupt enemy perception. 138
Red Eye Operations
Sunagakure sought the Red Eye specifically as a countermeasure to the Hyuga Clan’s Byakugan. Although the Third Kazekage disappeared before completing its recruitment, the village continued exerting pressure until the entire clan was brought into Sunagakure’s service. 138
Hongmaru, the Red Eye Clan’s most gifted younger member, enabled Sunagakure’s elite force to evade and deceive Konoha’s Byakugan reconnaissance. His illusions and false Chakra signatures allowed the ambush and killing of Hyuga scouts, opening a route for Ebizo’s force to strike Konoha’s medical logistics unit. 138 139
Third Great Ninja War
Declaration of War
Konoha’s unexpected declaration of a wartime state and deployment of 5,000 ninja under Jiraiya disrupted Sunagakure’s intended surprise offensive. Sunagakure had already been stockpiling supplies, conducting reconnaissance and sabotage in the Land of Rivers, and preparing to break Konoha’s southwestern line before it could mobilize. 134
Three days later, Rasa ordered a full-scale assault on the Land of Fire’s southwestern border and formally declared war on Konohagakure. Sunagakure accused Konoha, Sarutobi Hiruzen, and Shimura Danzō of murdering the Third Kazekage; Konoha countered by alleging that Sasori of the Red Sands had killed him. 134
Ambush of the Medical Logistics Unit
Ebizo led a force of more than 500 battle-hardened Sunagakure ninja against Tsunade’s Konoha medical convoy, which had a similar total number but only around 100 dedicated frontline combatants. The attack relied on Red Eye interference to bypass the convoy’s Hyuga reconnaissance screen. 138 142
The ambush initially placed Konoha at a severe disadvantage, but Shinichi’s counterattack and Tsunade’s command disrupted Sunagakure’s formation. The arrival of Konoha reinforcements ultimately forced Sunagakure to retreat, allowing the convoy to reach the southwestern main camp. 142 144
Battle of Kikyo Mountain
Sunagakure later mobilized in three columns against Konoha Headquarters:
| Formation | Strength | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Left flank | Approximately 1,000 ninja | Cut Konoha’s rear supply connection from the northeast |
| Right flank | Approximately 1,000 ninja | Strike forward outposts and supply depots from the southeast |
| Central force | Approximately 8,000 ninja | Force a decisive battle against Konoha’s main position at Kikyo Mountain |
Sunagakure’s deployment and objectives are documented in Chapter 152.
Rasa recognized Kikyo Mountain as a formidable natural stronghold, but proceeded with the assault. Sunagakure employed puppet units, summoned beasts, poison forces, Wind Release, and Earth Release in repeated attempts to breach Konoha’s layered defenses. 152 158
After more than half a day of fighting, Sunagakure failed to take the mountain. Of the 8,000 troops committed to the direct assault, fewer than 5,000 remained during the withdrawal; more than 3,000 were left dead on the battlefield, with wounded casualties uncounted. 158
Defensive Reorganization
Following the defeat at Kikyo Mountain and the destruction of its main camp by “Higashino Shinichi,” Rasa abandoned large-scale frontal operations. He ordered the southwestern front into a defensive posture focused on fortifications, elite-unit harassment, sabotage, reconnaissance, and accelerated deliveries of medicine, puppet materials, and reinforcements. 158
