Background and History
Hong Guang served as the branch fort lord responsible for Dezong Fort’s Doomsday Planet. When the planet’s opening was at risk, Kun Tong brought Zhang Hao, Mi Feng, and Yin Zhifeng in as paid support. Hong Guang accepted terms that included substantial payment and the planet’s collected resources, demonstrating how desperate he was for their assistance. 105
He accompanied the three fort lords to the infected planet in a robot body, piloting an outdated giant spider mech. Watching their nearly 300,000 robots and mechs deploy made him recognize the immense military and technological gap between himself and established fortress lords. 107 108
After his father, Hong Dezong, beat him and sent him to Zhang Hao’s late-Qing branch planet, Hong Guang became effectively stranded: the light gate had erased his soul imprint, leaving him unable to return without being re-imprinted. Zhang Hao took responsibility for supervising him, requisitioned his ten advanced robots, restricted his daily spending, and assigned Zhang Shihu as his guard. 191 192
Hong Guang initially struggled with the era’s poverty, poor sanitation, lack of modern conveniences, and unfamiliar social customs. He gradually made a life for himself through teahouses and Peking Opera, becoming a lavish patron whose spending earned him a large circle of hangers-on. 192 195 210
His ostentation repeatedly brought trouble. He was kidnapped after attracting a bandit gang’s attention, then later caused a major disturbance in a Beijing theater after being slapped by a nobleman’s men. 200 221 222
By the time of his later return to fortress society, Hong Guang had lost his sub-fortress lord title and lacked the funds to buy a quality mech. He turned to Zhang Hao for help and shared rumors of a possible “time-space tsunami.” 455 456
Appearance
Hong Guang is described as a burly, bald man with an exceptionally robust physique. At 1.85 meters tall, he stands noticeably above most people in the late-Qing setting. 105 192
- Wore a fake queue and skullcap to avoid standing out after arriving in the late Qing era. 192
- Later adopted a top hat, gold pocket watch, and chain, giving him the appearance of a wealthy Shanghai merchant. 193
- Frequently dressed in Peking Opera costumes and performed martial roles with a Pear Blossom Spear. 221 244
Personality
Hong Guang is spoiled, impulsive, and highly dependent on stronger figures around him. He has little patience for historical study, etiquette, or financial restraint, and initially treats the late-Qing era as a place to play rather than a dangerous society with rigid customs. 191 192 194
He craves recognition and enjoys using wealth to gain status. He pays entire teahouse bills, throws money onto opera stages, and openly admits that spending money feels satisfying. His generosity earns him public respect, though Zhang Hao considers much of that respect purchased rather than genuine. 195 210 211 218
Despite his cowardice around Hong Dezong and Zhang Hao, Hong Guang is fiercely prideful when personally insulted. Being slapped at the Beijing theater drove him into a violent rage, yet he stopped escalating once Zhang Hao intervened. 218 221 222
His experiences gradually make him more mature and socially aware. He learns the importance of “face,” develops a genuine appreciation for Peking Opera, and adapts well enough to form connections among Beijing’s nobles. 204 245 269
Abilities and Skills
Auxiliary Mecha Combat
Hong Guang wears an auxiliary mecha that gives him overwhelming physical advantages over ordinary people.
- Can wield and control heavy stage weapons, including a Pear Blossom Spear, with exceptional steadiness. 221 244
- Defeated several men in black and more than a dozen constables through punches, kicks, throws, and weaponized body movements. 221 222
- Uses flashy spinning kicks, flying kicks, and throws that contemporary observers mistake for extraordinary martial arts. 222
- The armor can withstand the era’s bullets over most of his body, though his head remains vulnerable. 222
- His enhanced strength is dangerous when angered; Zhang Hao’s intervention is one of the few things that reliably restrains him. 222 223
Robot Retinue
Hong Guang originally arrived with ten advanced robots, though Zhang Hao requisitioned them because their behavior and appearance were too conspicuous for the late Qing era. 191
- His robot guards can form skirmish lines and use scanning systems that make darkness or concealment ineffective. 205
- During the Beijing theater incident, one robot shielded Hong Guang while another charged the armed soldiers and captured Beile Engang. 222
- Zhang Hao later gave him a high-level warrior-style robot, far superior to the visibly mechanical body Hong Guang had been using. 272
Mech Piloting
Hong Guang’s earlier mech was a technologically obsolete giant spider mech that struggled to keep pace with Secret Workshop humanoid models. 107 108
- He sought to purchase a humanoid mech after losing his branch fort lord status. 455
- Zhang Hao identified the model Hong Guang wanted as an internally rated three-star basic mech, despite its external seven-star marketing, and arranged for Hong Guang to collect one. 455
Equipment
- Auxiliary mecha — Enhances strength, agility, weapon handling, and resistance to ordinary firearms. 221 222
- Ten advanced robots — Originally brought from Dezong Fort; later reassigned and redressed by Zhang Hao. 191 205
- Zhang Shihu — Top-tier robot assigned by Zhang Hao as Hong Guang’s guard and assistant. 192
- Warrior-style robot body — High-level robot given by Zhang Hao. 272
- Humanoid mech — A three-star basic model arranged for him by Zhang Hao. 455
Relationships
- Zhang Hao — Treated by Hong Guang as an elder brother despite Zhang Hao explicitly denying that they are biological brothers. Zhang Hao disciplines, protects, funds, and repeatedly rescues him. 191 192 218 455
- Hong Dezong — His father and the fort lord of Dezong Fort. Hong Guang fears him deeply; Hong Dezong beat him, stranded him on the late-Qing branch planet, later placed him under restrictions, and eventually stripped his sub-fortress lord position. 191 192 253 266 455
- Kun Tong — Fellow fortress heir who helped secure support for his Doomsday Planet and loaned him funds under collateral and interest terms. 105
- Mi Feng — One of the fort lords who assisted with Hong Guang’s Doomsday Planet. Hong Guang is notably fearful of him. 105 252
- Yin Zhifeng — Assisted in the Doomsday Planet operation and later relayed communications between Hong Guang and Zhang Hao. 105 266
- Zhang Shihu — Robot guard assigned to protect Hong Guang without helping him bully others. 191 192
- Engang — Beile initially involved in the Beijing theater conflict. Hong Guang later formed a friendship with him after the dispute. 222 223 238
- Dunmin — Beile who witnessed Hong Guang’s theater rampage and later became part of his Beijing social circle. 221 222 238
