The guy in the baseball cap walked over, seemingly wanting to knock on Jiang Cheng's door to confirm something.
The man in the suit stared at the door of room 404, then quickly glanced around. He said in a low voice, "Let's go back first. Something feels off here."
Back in their room, the man in the suit turned and closed the door, cautiously locking it from the inside.
The young man in the baseball cap yanked off his hat and threw it onto the bed with force. He turned around, his tone unfriendly, and asked, "Could that sound have been caused by those two in 404?"
The baseball cap guy had several deep scars on his head. The most exaggerated one started from the back of his skull and extended all the way behind his ear, which was one of the reasons he always wore a hat.
He was clearly not as young as he looked, probably around thirty, though he dressed in a rather rowdy fashion.
The man in the suit leaned against the wall, his face terrifyingly grim. After a long pause, he finally spoke, "Probably not. We just got here, and we don't know the conditions for triggering a vengeful spirit yet. I don't believe they'd dare do something like that." He paused. "Unless they're out of their minds."
Reminded by the man in the suit, the baseball cap guy's anger gradually subsided. He wasn't stupid and naturally understood the logic in what the man in the suit said.
His expression slowly became unnatural. "So that scraping sound really wasn't made by players, but by..." He looked at the man in the suit, but ultimately couldn't bring himself to say the word "ghost."
There was an unwritten rule in the nightmare world: once a mission started, unless absolutely necessary, no one wanted to utter that word, as if saying it would bring them bad luck.
"As far as we can see, nothing has happened, so don't scare yourself," the man in the suit said.
He unbuttoned his suit jacket and the top two buttons of his shirt, then took a deep breath. He said to his companion, "Room 405, which we chose, is theoretically in the safest position. We have neighbors on both sides, and room 404, judging by its name, sounds ominous and likely had a murder occur there before. So, no matter what happens to them, we'll get firsthand information. We just need to make sure we aren't the first ones to act."
Hearing this, the baseball cap guy seemed to recall something and reminded him, "We need to be careful. That skinny guy in 404 seems to be deliberately targeting you."
The man in the suit smiled, revealing a row of pearly white teeth, and said disdainfully, "I'll keep an eye out, and then I'll find an opportunity to keep him here forever."
Hearing the man in the suit say this, the baseball cap guy didn't have anything else to say.
After discussing guard duty and other matters with the man in the suit, he went to sleep first.
After all, one's energy level directly affected their chances of survival in the nightmare.
Room 404.
After returning to the room, Jiang Cheng didn't lie down immediately. He sat in a chair, as if contemplating something.
Fatty felt it was time to discuss important matters. He sat up on the bed, poked his head out, and asked, "Do you think someone will die tonight?"
In the previous villa mission, a middle-aged man had mysteriously died on the first night. His neck was twisted 180 degrees, his toes pointing forward, and his face backward.
What was even more terrifying was that Fatty was the first to discover him. He had been groggily heading to the restroom when he was so scared he almost lost control of his bladder.
That horrifying image still appeared in his mind from time to time.
"I don't think so," Jiang Cheng replied after thinking for a few seconds.
Fatty mumbled, "Doctor, you also said we wouldn't enter the nightmare tonight, but here we are."
Jiang Cheng turned his head and stared at Fatty for a moment before suddenly saying, "Fatty, I just remembered something very important."
"What is it?" Fatty nodded naturally. It was rare to see the doctor so serious, and he felt the latter might have discovered an important clue.
"Be careful when you sleep tonight. It's best to cover yourself with the blanket up to your chin," Jiang Cheng said, gesturing with his hands, his eyes very serious.
Fatty couldn't help but feel a little scared. He quickly scanned his surroundings, then wrapped himself in the blanket. Only then did he cautiously ask, "Why do you say that?"
Jiang Cheng clapped his hands and stood up. "Because if a ghost tries to twist your neck tonight, you'll at least have a chance to struggle."
Fatty: "..."
Perhaps seeing the trembling Fatty looked too pitiful, or perhaps out of a pang of conscience, Jiang Cheng offered to take the first watch so Fatty could sleep. He told Fatty he would wake him up later, and they would switch shifts.
But Fatty shook his head and sighed, "No need, Doctor. The story you just told was too invigorating. As soon as I close my eyes, I see a ghost twisting my neck. I'm not sleepy at all."
Since Fatty insisted, Jiang Cheng compromised. They agreed on a time for Fatty to wake him up, and then Jiang Cheng went to sleep.
Fatty sat on the bed, wrapping himself in all the blankets. Even so, he couldn't shake the chill that seemed to emanate from outside.
To be honest, the moment he entered this dormitory building, he had a very bad feeling, as if something was not quite right.
But after carefully observing everything, he couldn't pinpoint where the eerie feeling was coming from.
When Jiang Cheng said he had a premonition, Fatty actually felt it too. He had a strong feeling that someone would likely die tonight.
There was no basis for it, purely the intuition of Fatty's kind.
The neck-twisting joke had taken root in Fatty's heart. He shifted his sitting position several times, but still felt unsafe.
Finally, he propped up a pillow and leaned against the wall, then leaned back on the pillow. With his back against the wall, he figured no ghost could break his neck.
Before long, faint snores could be heard from Jiang Cheng's side.
Fatty couldn't help but admire Jiang Cheng. No matter the time or place, he could fall asleep whenever he wanted.
Compared to the clear division of roles in rooms 404 and 405, the people in room 406 were far worse off.
Although there were three of them, they did not trust each other.
Furthermore, there were only two beds in the room, meaning one person would have to make do with a stool for the night.
Two men and one woman, yet the woman held the advantage.
The woman looked unremarkable, with a neat ponytail and eyes as sharp as knives.
If Jiang Cheng were there, he might have been able to deduce from the woman's straight posture and the calluses on her hand and fingertips that she was a trained fighter, possibly even someone who had handled a gun.
But these two men lacked such insight. They could only tell that the woman was not to be trifled with.
And she was definitely not new to entering nightmares, otherwise, she wouldn't be so calm.
The woman occupied the best bed in the room, against the wall and away from the window.
After all, one never knew when a pale green face might appear outside the window.
The middle-aged man in the tank top and the other man were both first-time nightmare entrants. They sat side-by-side on the edge of the bed, looking flustered and uneasy.
