Background

Wu was created by Lin Chen during a period of extreme despair. The black-clothed Wu was meant to create endless strange tales and spread despair, while his gentler white-clothed counterpart represented the remaining hope within Lin Chen. The two aspects share the same face but possess radically different temperaments. 407

His bond with Lin Chen is defined by protectiveness, resentment, and betrayal. Wu insists that he wants to protect his sister because she is too weak to defend herself, yet he is angered by her forgiveness of those who harmed her and by her preference for his benevolent counterpart. 424 638 When Lin Chen attempts to restrain him, the black-clothed Wu rebels against both her and his white-clothed side, collapsing the world behind the mysterious door. 426

Wu later becomes connected to Jiang Cheng as a host-like entity. Though he initially considers cutting Jiang Cheng open to reach the door within him, their relationship gradually shifts from wary coexistence to mutual trust. 426 507 988

Appearance

Wu normally appears as a handsome, sharp-featured man in dark clothing, carrying a saber and black scabbard. His restrained exterior contrasts with the immense, inhuman shadow that manifests behind him in battle. 407 424 1024

  • Long black trench coat, black leather shoes, and a low-pulled hat. 407
  • Deep red eyes. 407
  • Sharp eyebrows and a cold, intimidating expression. 1121
  • Carries a saber and black scabbard. 1019 1034
  • Can manifest a towering blood-red or black shadow far larger than his human form. 1024

Personality

Early in the story, Wu is cold, violent, and deeply suspicious of others. He is motivated by despair and possesses a fierce hatred of those he considers evil, but his cruelty is also tied to his inability to accept Lin Chen's suffering. 423 424 He is willing to intimidate, interrogate, or kill without hesitation when pursuing an objective. 1021 1333

Despite this, Wu gradually develops restraint and attachment to Jiang Cheng's companions. Jiang Cheng's trust changes his behavior; Wu begins protecting Jiang Cheng, Fatty, and Huai Yi voluntarily rather than merely fulfilling a transaction. 988 He eventually refers to the group as “we,” tolerates Fatty's physical familiarity, and attempts awkward acts of comfort or romance based on his limited understanding of human emotions. 1151 1153 1557

Wu remains possessive and easily irritated by people he views as threats to Jiang Cheng, particularly Lin Wan'er and Wu Yingying. 1151 Even so, his later actions repeatedly demonstrate that he prioritizes his companions' survival over his own safety. 1524 1734

Abilities & Skills

Anomaly Collection and Assimilation

Wu possesses a comic-book-like ability that allows him to collect captured ghosts and monsters, master their powers, and manipulate them as new urban legends. 579

  • Absorbs defeated anomalies and incorporates their abilities into his own arsenal. 579 1506
  • Can assimilate powerful entities such as the Midnight Killer, Scarecrow, and Water Lord. 1506
  • Stores collected entities as small doll-like figures. 1729
  • His absorbed powers can be used in combinations that opponents cannot easily predict. 579

Shadow Manipulation

Wu can interact directly with shadows, using them to locate, restrain, interrogate, and destroy targets.

  • Pulls shadows from living or anomalous beings to force information from them. 1021
  • Devours hostile shadows, including the shadows haunting the bar incident. 1018
  • Manifests multiple shadow forms, including the Heart-Corroding Demon, Scarecrow, Starving Ghost, and Killer. 885 1519
  • Sends his collected entities to reinforce allies or stabilize a collapsing battlefield. 1519
  • His own shadow can become an independent, dangerous blood-red presence that he must actively restrain. 1024

Saber and Scabbard Mastery

Wu is an exceptionally lethal close-range combatant whose scabbard is as dangerous as his blade.

  • Can control weapons against their owner's will, as demonstrated when Blade Demon cannot move his ghost-head saber against Wu's intent. 1035
  • Uses his scabbard to shatter the Night Watchman's Eight Trigrams Heart Protection Mirror and kill it. 1116
  • Fights with extreme precision, including cutting Cocoon threads without injuring the person trapped within. 1021
  • Can overpower or kill powerful anomalies through direct combat, including Judge, Spider Ghost, and the Water Lord. 1024 1506

Manifestation and Mobility

Wu can emerge from shadows, walls, and ceilings, allowing him to move through supernatural environments in ways ordinary people cannot.

  • Melts into ceilings or shadowed surfaces to disappear. 1019
  • Reappears suddenly at close range to attack or rescue allies. 1524
  • Can manifest despite the bus's suppression as his strength grows. 1013 1020

Xia Tan's Door and Black Energy

Wu carries Xia Tan's Door and black energy connected to it, granting him extraordinary power but exposing him to corruption and loss of control. 1154 1532

  • Uses the black energy to exert stronger control over absorbed anomalies. 1532
  • The blood-red shadow associated with Xia Tan's Door can intervene to protect Wu and purge harmful black energy. 1531 1532
  • The energy can erode Wu's body, impair his will, and threaten to consume him. 886 1751
  • The bus and certain hostile domains can still suppress his strength, though this limitation weakens over time. 988 1522
