Background / History
Li Qiwei is a young master of a prominent Han family in Guangzhou. His family supports the Southeast Mutual Protection policy, placing it at odds with elements of the Qing court and making him a target while studying in Britain. 35
After the original Li Qiwei dies, he is replaced by a transmigrator: a physics PhD graduate from the University of Science and Technology of China. Armed with scientific knowledge more than a century ahead of 1900, he rejects the original owner's insecurity toward Westerners and resolves to place Huaxia at the pinnacle of science. 1 2
While abroad, Li develops Quantum Theory, communicates his ideas to Einstein, and proposes the Spark Plan to nurture a modern Huaxia scientific system. His early work rapidly establishes him as an internationally recognized physicist. 8 27 46
Upon returning to Huaxia, he uses official legitimacy, educational reform, industrial development, and private institutions to cultivate scientific and engineering talent. Though he accepts Qing appointments, he views them as a means to advance reform rather than an end in themselves. 154 169 190
He later shifts the center of his long-term plans to Borneo, developing Science City, research institutions, industry, educational systems, and scientific governance while retaining international influence. 201 634 712
Appearance
Li Qiwei is portrayed as a tall, strikingly handsome Huaxia man whose formal Western dress and composed bearing overturn European stereotypes of Qing subjects. 59 157
- Approximately six feet tall. 59
- Has “mysterious Eastern features” and an imposing presence. 59
- Usually wears fitted formal suits and ties in public academic settings. 59
- Does not wear a queue, even while serving in the Qing system. 1 157
- Is repeatedly described as radiant, high-spirited, and difficult for others to meet eye-to-eye without confidence. 161
Personality
Li Qiwei is ambitious, rational, and intensely future-oriented. He treats science as the foundation of national strength and consistently prioritizes building systems—schools, industries, research institutions, and talent pipelines—over pursuing empty prestige. 2 109 160
He is outwardly approachable and often speaks to others as equals, from students and bodyguards to overseas compatriots. This habit reflects his personal values, although he recognizes that his lack of an authoritarian bearing can create difficulties in the era's political environment. 260 200
He is politically cautious rather than apolitical. Li avoids rash revolutionary action, preferring to accumulate strength through education and industry until conditions are favorable; he nevertheless supports patriotic and revolutionary forces in secret. 161 171 190
As his influence grows, his confidence becomes increasingly absolute. His breakthrough into Grandmasterhood marks his decision to abandon excessive fear and calculations in favor of openly pursuing Huaxia's rise through superior scientific and material power. 380
