The quality of any work was never going to stay at the same level throughout. Some storylines would appeal to fans, but most would strike them as merely average, or even boring.

For a work to become a huge hit, it was really enough for its overall quality to be solid and for one stretch of the story to be god-tier.

Take Slam Dunk, for example. People who had seen it in the Parallel World might have forgotten much of the story over time, but Mitsui Hisashi's "I want to play basketball" was surely unforgettable. And in the National Tournament, Sakuragi Hanamichi had fought tooth and nail against Sannoh Industry to get the ball, refusing to leave the court even with a serious back injury. To convince Anzai to let him keep playing, he'd said, "Old man, your greatest moment... was probably during your time in Japan! And mine is right now..."

Those were the kinds of scenes and storylines in anime that stayed with people long after they'd watched them.

Of course, the current storyline in Kimi ni Todoke was nowhere near that level. When it came down to it, it was just romantic entanglements, a little scheming, and some petty rivalry!
