| First Appearance | Mentioned as an emerging threat in Icathia 18 |
Nature and Origin
The Void was initially a “pure sea of nothingness.” Its contact with Runeterra’s matter and emotions created ripples within it, from which the first Watchers emerged. Seeking to restore the Void’s original stillness, the Watchers resolved to destroy Runeterra. 143 203
Void entities are shaped by what they consume and encounter in the material realm. Matter, energy, knowledge, memories, concepts, and even theories can become nourishment, allowing them to develop thought, desire, and increasingly specialized forms. 183 185
The Void’s connection to Runeterra also affects the spiritual realm. It can reveal possible futures to those it touches; Ne'Zuk attributed his despair and eventual madness to a future shown to him by the Void. 194 202
Factions and Purpose
| Faction / Entity | Relationship to the Void | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Watchers | The first beings born from the Void’s disturbance after contact with Runeterra 203 | Destroy Runeterra and return the Void to tranquility 143 203 |
| Bel'Veth | A later creation desired by both the Void and Runeterra’s projected consciousness 203 | Assimilate the Void with Runeterra and usher in a new era after annihilation 184 202 |
| Voidborn | Material-realm creatures produced or altered by the Void 143 183 | Consume, evolve, spread corruption, and obey the will directing them 182 183 185 |
| Void-corrupted Ascended | Ancient Ascended whose bodies and powers were overtaken by Void corruption 185 186 | Serve as powerful assault units during the invasion of Ixialia 185 187 |
Bel'Veth and the Watchers originate from the Void but are not presented as identical in nature or purpose. The Watchers embody pure hostility toward Runeterra, while Bel'Veth represents a Void-Runeterra hybrid possibility that seeks a successor era rather than simple restoration of emptiness. 203 223
Properties
Assimilation and Evolution
Void creatures grow by consuming material and spiritual resources.
- Corpses provide the Void with matter, knowledge, memories, and ideas. 183 185
- A Void creature’s innate Void Origin trait can evolve beyond its initial common quality, with no known upper limit. 183
- Void forces prioritize recovering or devouring corpses on the battlefield, even at substantial losses. 185
- Void creatures can rapidly adapt after destruction; hatchlings emerged from crushed burrowers and continued the assault. 182
Corruption
The Void corrupts bodies, powers, and the material realm itself.
- Void-corrupted Ascended retain immense physical strength while their bodies become fused with rotten flesh, tar-like material, and Void growths. 185 186
- Monroco’s Rust Dust spread Void traits into the environment, slowing Yuan Chen’s body, perception, flying blades, and Dawn Power enchantments. 208
- Void rays can dissolve the material realm’s substrate rather than merely inflict physical damage. 218
- Void essence is generally dangerous for ordinary beings to absorb, contaminating their energy and gradually corrupting them. 247
Spatial Manipulation
Certain Void creatures can undermine the boundary between realms.
- Void Abominations corrupt, twist, and erode spatial anchor points with their tentacles. 186
- Their activity can establish teleportation beacons, enabling further Void forces to descend. 186 187
- Ixialia’s reinforced material-realm veil and Vidalion Loom were used to prevent the Void from freely multiplying and collapsing local spatial structure. 187 204
Mental and Spiritual Influence
The Void can influence minds directly or through its creatures.
- The Void Dreadbeast’s Mind Blast attacks intelligent targets through a crystal on its forehead. 183
- Neeko’s consciousness was suppressed when it merged with a Void hatchling, allowing Bel'Veth’s consciousness to speak through her body. 202 203
- Severing the local anchor to the spiritual realm ended Bel'Veth’s possession of Neeko. 203
- Visions attributed to the Void contributed to Ne'Zuk’s hopelessness, self-destructive behavior, and fractured sanity. 194 202
History
Lissandra’s encounter with the Void predates the ancient Shuriman conflict. She sealed the Watchers in True Ice beneath the Howling Abyss, but the seal later began weakening. 171
Ancient Shurima later fought a devastating Void War. Although Shurima appeared to win, the Void’s source remained intact; the empire exhausted nearly all of its accumulated resources merely to force a temporary retreat. 77 142
During that war, Ne'Zuk and other Ascended used Monolith Fortress in an attempt to shatter the Void at the cost of everyone aboard it. The fortress crashed into Icathia, damaging the region’s rifts and preventing the Void from rapidly overrunning eastern Shurima. 143 194
After Ixialia deactivated its concealment spell, surviving Void remnants remembered the nation and moved against it. Yuan Chen, King Yuen, Sage Sem, and the Yuentar concluded that the invasion was driven by revenge and plunder, with Yishuaoken as its ultimate target. 143 187
Invasion of Ixialia
The Void assault began with burrowers, hatchlings, and a Swarm Herald erupting from beneath Ixialia’s borders. Ixialia’s defensive spell crushed the first burrowers between newly raised mountains, but the hatchlings continued adapting and attacking. 181 182
The invasion escalated as Void Dreadbeasts, Undertitans, Void Abominations, corrupted Ascended, and Rek'Sai’s Xer'sai swarm joined the battle. Void Abominations threatened to establish spatial beacons, forcing Ixialia’s defenders to abandon the southwestern border and retreat toward Yishuaoken. 183 184 185 187
Bel'Veth directed the swarm’s campaign and ultimately used the invasion to pursue goals beyond simple conquest. Her Hive Herald remained active even after the destruction of Void Rock, and nearby Void creatures fused with its remains to revive it as a larger giant. 202 215
The final Void giant was destroyed when Yuan Chen released an energy vortex through his Seven-Fingered Demon Hand, annihilating the giant and Bel'Veth’s Hive Herald. 220
Void Symbiosis
After the Battle of Yishuaoken, Yuan Chen acquired the Epic trait Void Symbiosis. It resulted from Bel'Veth severing part of her already-corrupted consciousness to preserve herself after Oshirresh’s interference. 223
- Grants command authority over Void creatures below Epic quality. 223
- Allows Yuan Chen to pressure the wills of Epic Void creatures. 223
- Enhances his abilities while he is within the Void. 223
- Opens a path to Void magic and prevents him from losing his way within the Void. 223
- Allows him to awaken independent consciousness and influence spiritual imprints in Void creatures. 223
- Enables him to convert Void essence into evolutionary growth, though the location of his symbiote is unknown. 247
