Background / History
Initial condition
Class D begins as a poorly coordinated group whose students have conflicting goals: some want to advance, some want to coast, and others undermine collective progress. Hanyu Xiuyi and Horikita Suzune identify unity as the condition necessary for the class to rise. 3
Hanyu agrees to cooperate with Horikita under three conditions: the entire class must benefit, point spending must be planned rather than unlimited, and the class must learn more about the school's ranking and Special Exam systems. 3 He finances early class activities and commits point support for necessary operations, while Horikita develops strategy. 3
First Special Exam
Before the uninhabited-island exam, Class D purchases survival supplies worth 498,000 points and organizes them according to a checklist. 10 On the island, the class establishes a camp, assigns labor, builds shelters, manages supplies, and expands its exploration through smaller groups. 11 13
Class D defeats Class C in a three-round challenge: Sudo Ken wins the fighting match, Yukimura Teruhiko wins the knowledge quiz, and a five-member team wins the teamwork challenge. The victory earns Class D the contested supplies and 500,000 points from Class C. 15
The class finishes the exam with 873 Class Points and gains a higher monthly personal-point distribution. 19
Internal threats and consolidation
Class C attempts to fracture Class D by bribing Ike Kanji and Yamauchi Haruki and having them assess classmates by usefulness and points. Hanyu and Horikita identify the scheme before it divides the class. 22
Rather than expelling the two students from the group, Hanyu persuades Ike and Yamauchi to return to Class D and report Class C's activities. 23 24 When Ryuen targets Karuizawa Kei through her middle-school bullying history, Class D publicly supports her, strengthening its cohesion. 25
Kushida Kikyo later admits that she had acted as an informant for Class C. Class D accepts her apology after the Sports Festival, allowing her to return as a full member of the group. 35
Sports Festival and midterms
Class D counters Class C's planned sabotage during the Sports Festival. Sudo wins the men's 100-meter dash and obstacle course; Matsushita Chiaki, Sotomura Hideo, and Hasebe Haruka also place in their events. 34 The class exposes Class C's foul in tug-of-war, defeats Class A in the final, and wins the festival. 34
For the midterms, the class adopts a coordinated review plan led by Yukimura, Horikita, Hanyu, and Hirata. 40 The effort produces a grade-best average of 86.3, while Horikita, Hanyu, Yukimura, and Kushida place second, third, seventh, and ninth respectively. 46
Organization
Class D initially forms a ten-person core team after the first Special Exam, consisting of Hanyu, Horikita, Hirata, Kushida, Yukimura, Sudo, Ayanokoji, Matsushita, Hasebe, and Sotomura. 19
