"Hello, is this where the mercenary squad used to be?"
Just as Lynch was secretly plotting against Klein, the door was pushed open, and a man wearing a top hat with greying hair walked in.
He was still holding an umbrella, and the water from it dripped onto the floor. Rozanne sighed in despair; cleaning this up would be her job in a moment.
"You could say that. Is there something you need?"
Even though she was annoyed, Rozanne still approached him with a gentle expression to receive him.
"I have a commission."
The man said hurriedly.
Rozanne immediately looked at Lynch. Most of the official Nighthawks members were currently in the Golden Indus District, Old Neil had long since stopped going on field missions alone, and Brazier was stationed at the Chanis Gate. Aside from Lynch, there was no one else available.
Lynch walked over helplessly.
"Hello. The team members are all out at the moment. I'm a newcomer; although I have some abilities, I'm not sure if I can help you."
He rubbed his temples.
The Stone of Myriad Phenomena didn't have much energy left, so he hadn't been generating chapters of Lord of the Mysteries lately. He planned to wait until Monday, when Klein ascended to Sefirah Castle, to steal some more energy.
He was currently simulating Leonard's Sleepless pathway. Compared to Dunn, his memory was much better, and he was quite a capable fighter, but he was worried he wouldn't be able to handle other tasks.
As for switching pathways, he was reluctant to do so, fearing that if he switched back, he would end up as the captain's Sleepless again.
However, he could bring Klein along; Klein was idle anyway.
If this commission didn't involve running away, it meant it was part of Klein's plot, so there would be no problem letting Klein take the lead.
However, he soon noticed the man opposite him shaking his head, refusing to let a newcomer take the job.
"Sorry, I'll look elsewhere."
The man bowed apologetically to Lynch, opened his umbrella, and left.
"What kind of judgment is that? I think Lynch is very capable! Even the captain said Lynch surprised him!"
Rozanne walked over huffily, used a mop to clean the floor, and then slammed the door shut, looking as proud as if she had personally chased the man out.
"Alright, don't be angry. I really don't know if I can do it. After all, aside from being decent at fighting, I feel like my memory has declined. If I had known, I would have gotten into Tingen University before taking the potion. That way, I might not have had to work so hard."
Lynch sighed helplessly.
Everyone knew this, and they couldn't help but laugh.
"Alright, stop laughing. Let me read for a while longer. If I don't work hard, I'll really be kicked out of the Nighthawks."
Lynch muttered.
He sat on a sofa in the lounge and began to read the book in front of him seriously.
The more he read, the sleepier he became, and the closer the book got to his face.
Just as Lynch was about to fall completely asleep, the door to the security company opened again.
The wind outside, carrying the scent of damp earth, woke him up.
"Why are you back?"
Rozanne's curious voice rang out.
"Have those official members not returned yet?"
It was the elderly man who had wanted to commission them earlier.
Lynch blinked, quickly making himself more alert.
It seemed the plot belonging to Klein had officially begun.
"They don't know when they'll be back. Currently, there really is only Lynch."
Rozanne explained helplessly.
The man pondered for a moment before finally making up his mind:
"A newcomer is still a newcomer. As long as he can complete the commission, that's enough. I've been to every security company and private detective agency in the area, and none of them can do anything. Unlike you guys who at least have a newcomer—you're all I have left!"
Lynch stood up.
"Don't worry, I'll call my friend to come with me. We're only called newcomers because we don't have much experience, not because we lack skill."
He smiled and sat down opposite the man.
"Can you tell me what happened?"
"Yes, it's like this. My name is Keli, and I am the butler for the tobacco merchant Victor... Our young master, Mr. Elliott, has been kidnapped. We need your help to find his location.
If you succeed, we are willing to pay one hundred pounds. If you can also rescue him, you can receive two hundred pounds."
Deal!
Lynch agreed almost without thinking.
He remembered that unofficial members could seemingly get a share of these commission fees. Even if it were only two pounds, he was willing to do it!
When it came to finding people, that was a job for Klein, and as for catching the kidnappers, that was naturally a job for Mountbatten.
I believe Mountbatten would be more than willing to take the credit for such a task.
"Are you done talking? I'll go draft the contract!"
Hearing their conversation come to an end, Rozanne immediately went to type up a contract and brought it over.
Lynch and Mr. Keli both signed their names.
"So, when do you plan to set off?"
Mr. Keli asked anxiously.
Lynch indicated that he could leave immediately.
"Then I'll help you call a carriage; that will be faster!"
Mr. Keli hurried out, and Lynch wore a satisfied expression as he watched his retreating back.
Look at that, now that is someone who knows how to get things done—he even thought of a carriage.
After Mr. Keli left, Lynch turned his gaze toward Klein.
"Let's go!"
Klein looked at him in confusion. "Go where?"
"To complete the mission, of course. If we can rescue Elliott, we should be able to get two pounds. How about we split it, one pound each?"
Klein stood up immediately.
"We get a cut of the money too?"
"Yes, if you go on a mission, half of the reward goes to Mrs. Orianna, and the other half is split. However, since you aren't official members, you only get one-tenth."
Rozanne explained from the side.
Klein immediately began calculating in his head how much he would get.
If they rescued young master Elliott, they would receive a commission of two hundred pounds. Mrs. Orianna would get one hundred pounds, leaving one hundred pounds remaining.
He and Lynch would only get one-tenth of that hundred pounds, which was ten pounds!
Ten pounds! Who would turn down such lovely money?
Klein immediately put on his hat and chased after Lynch, rushing out of the security company.
It was still raining outside, but fortunately, the carriage had already arrived at the entrance of the security company.
Klein saw Lynch jump onto the carriage and was just about to climb up when he heard Lynch say in a tone tinged with a hint of nostalgia:
"Remember how thrilling and exciting it was when you first got into Dunn's carriage? I'm really not used to you getting into a carriage so obediently now."
Klein: ...
Would it kill you not to bring up things from my dreams?
This guy really doesn't know how to talk.
"Stop talking so much. Have you thought about how we should find the person?"
Klein climbed into the carriage and changed the subject.
How to find the person?
Lynch turned his gaze toward Klein.
Isn't this a Seer's job?
"You aren't planning on making me think of every solution while you just sit there and split the money for free, are you?"
Lynch looked at Klein with suspicion, which made Klein so angry he nearly jumped up.
Money, money, money—why is this guy only ever thinking about money?
