It was only after running a fair distance that Klein remembered Lynch was still in the carriage, but after a moment's thought, he felt Lynch would surely be fine; after all, his own affairs had little to do with Lynch.
At most, he might be questioned by Dunn, but without evidence, such matters should be harmless.
Besides, he couldn't worry about anyone else right now.
He didn't know what had happened that afternoon, nor did he know if the original owner's failed suicide attempt would arouse suspicion, so he could only run faster, even faster.
He didn't know how much time had passed when he arrived at the entrance of Iron Cross Street, where several carriages were waiting to be hired.
Without a second thought, he jumped onto one of the carriages.
Immediately, his gaze froze.
Before him was a shocked-looking Lynch, who was still clutching Dunn's arm tightly, with the green-eyed officer's revolver pressed against his temple.
"Why did you come back? Run!"
Lynch urged him on with an anxious expression.
Lynch reached out, attempting to snatch the gun from the green-eyed officer's hand, clearly intending to resist for his sake.
But...
A gunshot rang out.
A splash of blood.
Klein looked at the smiling Dunn before him, then at the playful-looking green-eyed officer, feeling a sense of inexplicable terror.
"What is going on?"
Klein opened his eyes abruptly and sat up from Benson's bed.
"A dream?"
He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, unsure of what this situation meant.
Could it really be that he had just had a nightmare?
The Lynch in his dream had been so loyal, sacrificing his life to cover his escape.
But why would he have such a dream?
Could it be that Lynch's offer to pay only half the medical expenses had touched him that much?
Klein shook his head with a wry smile, stood up, and prepared to go to the living room for a drink of water, and perhaps to use the washroom while he was at it.
However, as he approached the washroom, he saw a figure in a trench coat standing beside his window.
"Allow me to introduce myself: Nighthawk Dunn Smith."
Klein thought of the Beyonders that Miss Justice and Mr. Hanged Man had spoken of above the gray fog, and immediately understood what had just happened.
"You dragged me into a dream and made me do all those things?"
"I only dragged you into the dream; the things you did were all your own doing."
Dunn explained with an amused expression.
Klein felt awkward for a second, then immediately thought of Lynch.
"Then the Lynch in the dream—was that a disguise you created?"
Dunn shook his head.
"No, I simply pulled you both in together. I was quite surprised that he acted that way.
However, it is understandable. According to your accounts, he kindly tried to stop you last night, and even though you beat him up, he didn't hold a grudge. It seems he gets along with you quite harmoniously."
Klein's expression tightened.
"Then what happened to him now?"
The green-eyed officer in the dream had fired his gun; was Lynch, was Lynch really dead?
"He's fine. It was just a little joke, and a warning to him as well. Helping a suspect escape and attempting to seize a service weapon are serious crimes."
Dunn smiled again, then walked toward Klein's room and knocked gently on the door.
From inside the room came Lynch's nervous voice, "Who is it?"
"It's me, Dunn Smith!"
The room went quiet for a moment, then the door opened, revealing Lynch's somewhat pale face.
"What is it?"
It was clear that Lynch wanted to pretend nothing had happened, but anyone could see the lingering fear on his face.
Even so, Klein noticed that this guy was still constantly signaling for him to move toward the door.
Sigh, what a good brother.
Even after dying once, he was still this loyal.
"Mr. Trance, helping a suspect escape is no small matter. In reality, if you die, you really die."
A warning came from the top of the stairs.
Lynch looked over subconsciously.
"Leonard, you shouldn't have fired that shot just now."
Dunn looked at Leonard with disapproval.
Leonard offered a casual apology, then looked at Lynch with a grin.
"I've tried it; it doesn't actually hurt, it's just a bit scary and quite thrilling. What do you think?"
Lynch really wanted to retort.
He certainly thought it was too thrilling.
The gun went off so suddenly that he almost thought he was a goner.
However, he held back for now, only showing an expression of astonishment.
"You guys... the dream was real?"
"My ability can drag you into a dream. I hope it didn't give you too much of a fright."
Dunn smiled.
Lynch wiped the sweat from his face and immediately returned to his usual state.
"Can I get some compensation? I was scared to death in that dream. And Klein, what's wrong with you? Didn't you run away? How did you end up back here? If that were real, I would have sacrificed my life for nothing to help you escape; I definitely wouldn't have been able to die in peace!"
Klein was so embarrassed by his words that he couldn't lift his head.
It was Dunn who came to his rescue.
"There is no compensation; this is part of the investigation. The dream amplifies your emotions and character. Compared to the real you, I trust the you in the dream more. As for why Klein couldn't run away, it's because the scene in the dream is controlled by me. Even if he ran, he couldn't get far from me; it was just to set the atmosphere. Alright, let's head down quietly now. I assume you wouldn't want to wake the other tenants, right?"
After Dunn finished speaking, he gestured for them to leave quietly.
Walking to the door, Klein asked in a low voice: "So, do you really believe I have amnesia?"
"Yes, I believe you, but you still need to see an expert to confirm it. Even I cannot guarantee that I can get everything right. Besides, you are still linked to the matter of that Antigonus Notebook."
"What?"
Lynch and Klein asked simultaneously.
"It's like this: after we handed in the Antigonus Notebook, we discovered a very serious problem. All the content inside has disappeared. We want to know what happened."
Lynch looked at him in astonishment.
"Impossible, I even flipped through it a few times before you guys arrived!"
"There is truly no content left. It even makes us doubt that it was the Antigonus Notebook; it doesn't even look like a Beyonder item anymore."
Dunn explained softly, gesturing for them to board the carriage again.
Lynch sighed, not daring to think about the reason why the Antigonus Notebook had become what it was, choosing instead to act like an ordinary person caught up in the mess.
Yet, the moment he stepped up, he secretly worried: could it really be the Stone of Myriad Phenomena that drained the notebook dry?
He rubbed his temples with a guilty conscience, waiting for Klein to board the carriage.
Klein hesitated for a moment before climbing up.
He wanted to run away again, but ultimately gave up.
"You didn't run; that was a wise decision. I am very curious as to why you wanted to run in the dream?"
Dunn looked at Klein and asked curiously.
"I don't remember what I did. I was worried that Welch and Naia's deaths were truly caused by me, so I just wanted to leave this place and start a new life in the Southern Continent."
Dunn nodded, then looked at Lynch.
"And you? Why did you try to stop us?"
Lynch sighed.
"What else could I do? I'm good friends with Benson, and his younger brother is like a junior to me. Seeing that expression—he looked as guilty as if he'd committed a crime—I had to help if I could. I couldn't just watch him die, could I?"
Klein was touched, but somewhat dissatisfied with his words.
What did he mean by Klein being his junior?
Lynch was at most three years older than the original owner, and two years younger than he was in his past life. And he wanted to act like an elder?
He was taking advantage of him for no reason!
