When Ding Lao'er raised his question, Third Brother Xi did not answer directly. His face merely darkened. "Lao'er, I'm just a commoner... The constables got their benefits. How could I possibly question them?"
He had accepted Ding Lao'er's favor, yet he had not even remembered the man's face. That said plenty about their relationship.
Of course, if it had been Ding Lao'er's own matter, he might have considered stepping forward. But when it came to someone else's business, he had no interest in getting involved.
Ding Lao'er was a sensible man as well. After freezing for a moment, he gritted his teeth and said, "Third Brother, I'll vouch for this man. Ask them how much it will take."
Third Brother Xi was slightly taken aback. He knew these mountain folk all too well. Their lives were extremely hard, and they barely had any spare money in hand.
So he lowered his voice and kindly advised him, "Lao'er, Wang Er is leading the group today. That guy is ruthless. If you ask me, your son's illness has already been cured. Why wade into this mess?"
"That won't do. They didn't even charge for the medicine," Ding Lao'er said, shaking his head decisively. "If I ignore this, how can I face people afterward?"
After saying that, he cupped his hands toward Xi Old Third and spoke sincerely. "I hope Third Brother can ask for me."
Third Brother Xi glanced at him, sighed, and shook his head. Then he walked over to the tall, burly constable and began whispering to him.
The tall, burly constable understood what was going on at once. He listened with one ear cocked, then shot Ding Lao'er a questioning look.
Ding Lao'er nodded firmly. That was right. He would vouch for this man.
After thinking it over, the
