Background
One Heart Dojo
Kuina was born to Koushirou and his wife at the One Heart Dojo in Shimotsuki Village. Wright returned to the dojo shortly after breaking through to Iron Cutting and Observation Haki, where he was introduced to her as his new junior sister. 6
Before she could properly train under Wright, he sent the dojo a Wrightforged Pointing Crystal pendant for her protection. The Crystal later activated when Kuina suffered a catastrophic fall down a warehouse stairway while retrieving a whetstone; it kept her alive until Wright returned from Marine Headquarters. 47 92
Wright healed her completely with Eternal Fire. Following her recovery, Kuina returned to training with renewed energy and confidence, remaining the strongest disciple at the dojo. 92 93
Rivalry with Zoro
Kuina and Roronoa Zoro promised that one of them would become the World’s Greatest Swordsman. Her early fear that girls would become weaker than boys fueled her determination to surpass the limitation Koushirou described. 92 94
After entering the Marines, Kuina’s practical combat experience and specialized training widened the gap between them. In their 2,002nd duel, she overwhelmed Zoro’s Three-Sword Style with Killing Intent and seriously wounded him using One-Sword Style: Mountain Splitting Strike before Wright healed him. 183
Marine Career
Wright brought Kuina to Marine Headquarters after a month of special training. She embraced the Marines as a path to strength, resources, and real combat experience rather than remaining on Shimotsuki Village. 94 95
At sixteen, Kuina graduated at the top of the Marine Academy and was recommended for Zephyr’s Elite Training Camp. Wright later selected her as the sole Elite Training Camp graduate to join his command at the G-5 Branch. 182 225
| Rank / Position | Chapter | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Marine Headquarters First Class Petty Officer | 182 | Held this rank upon graduating from the Marine Academy at age sixteen. 182 |
| Elite Training Camp trainee | 182 | Admitted through recommendation for exceptional graduation results and strength beyond her peers. 182 |
| Lieutenant, G-5 Branch | 225 | Officially joined Wright’s command after graduating from the Elite Training Camp. 225 |
| Commodore | 331 | Attempted to stop the Straw Hats from leaving Loguetown. 331 |
| Rear Admiral | 463 | Continued pursuing the Straw Hat crew in Dressrosa. 463 |
| Vice Admiral | 534 | Arrived in Wano as “Flying Sky” Kuina and delivered Enma to Zoro. 534 |
Appearance
By sixteen, Kuina had grown into a graceful, beautiful young woman with bright, perceptive eyes. In Marine service, she is typically depicted in a Justice Coat with Wado Ichimonji at her waist; in Wano, she wears a light-blue kimono. 182 225 528
- Black hair and large eyes. 534
- Frequently carries the white-handled, white-sheathed Wado Ichimonji. 190
- Her resemblance to Tashigi is so close that others regularly mistake them for one another; Kuina is distinguished by not wearing Tashigi’s glasses. 190 225
Personality
Kuina is intensely competitive and unwilling to accept gender as a barrier to becoming a great swordswoman. She trained harder than her Marine Academy peers specifically to overcome the physical disparity she believed could limit female swordsmen. 94 129
Her confidence can become arrogance, as shown when she boasted about easily defeating Zoro after recovering from her injuries. She is nevertheless capable of recognizing her mistakes when Wright points them out. 93
Marine service gave her a purpose beyond personal strength. After witnessing training, battles, and civilians affected by piracy, Kuina chose to wield her sword only against evildoers and for her own interpretation of Justice. 187
She is also observant and methodical. During the Rommel Kingdom investigation, she identified White Horse’s physical traits, narrowed the suspect pool, organized surveillance, and exposed Cavendish’s connection to the nightly attacks. 242 243
Abilities & Skills
One-Sword Style
Kuina follows a single-minded One-Sword Style built on the One Heart Dojo’s foundation and advanced instruction from Wright. She treats One-Sword Style as her personal route to becoming a Swordsman. 250
- Mountain Splitting Strike — A powerful decisive slash that disarmed and severely wounded Zoro during their 2,002nd duel; she also used it to intercept White Horse. 183 243
- Severing Sea Waves — An Iron Cutting technique that cuts with the force of a great wave; it defeated Mr. 1 in a single exchange. 243 250
- Severing Wind and Cloud — A massive, nearly invisible Flying Slash accelerated with Float-Float Fruit power. 331
- Defense: Storm Flash — A defensive technique that countered the Straw Hats’ combined assault. 464
- Her Killing Intent, earned through real combat, gives her attacks greater force in early-stage swordsmanship engagements. 183 184
Float-Float Fruit
Kuina ate the Float-Float Fruit despite knowing that developing it would divide her attention from pure swordsmanship. She accepted that tradeoff because the ability better served her Marine duties and larger goals. 529
- Grants aerial mobility, allowing her to pursue and attack opponents from the sky. 331 464
- Lets her imbue sword attacks with greater aerial speed and maneuverability. 331
- Can support large-scale transport; Wright proposed using her ability to raise uninhabited islands to Sky Island. 269
- Stormy weather is especially unfavorable to the Fruit’s operation; her warship’s Holy Wright shielding mitigates this risk. 331 429
Tactical Command
Kuina has led Marine investigations and field operations independently, including the response to “Rommel’s Kamaitachi” and the arrest of Cavendish’s subordinates. 242 243
She also performs reconnaissance and strategic analysis. During the Summit War, she was the first Marine to locate Kaido and Shanks’ clash, and later worked with Wright to investigate Shanks’ possible connection to Elbaf. 401 402
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wado Ichimonji — A Grade Sword 21 and Kuina’s primary weapon. It was forged by her grandfather, Shimotsuki Kozaburo, and passed down through Koushirou’s family. 93 534
- Wrightforged Pointing Crystal pendant — Given by Wright before she began sword training. It saved her life after her stairway accident and has subtly nourished her body since childhood. 47 92 378
- Flying Sky — Kuina’s streamlined flying warship, designed by Vegapunk to reduce the stamina burden of her Float-Float Fruit. 429
- Azure Sky Fortress — A larger aerial fortress that remains approximately 5,000 meters above Kuina’s operating area and supports surveillance around G-5. 429
Relationships
- Wright — Senior brother, mentor, and protector. He saved Kuina twice, arranged her Marine education, trained her in swordsmanship, and supports her career as a Marine. 92 94 225
- Koushirou and Shimotsuki Madam — Her parents and the masters of the One Heart Dojo. Koushirou’s view of women’s physical limits initially shaped Kuina’s insecurity, but the dojo remains central to her swordsmanship foundation. 6 92 94
- Roronoa Zoro — Rival and junior brother. Their promise to compete for the title of World’s Greatest Swordsman defines much of Kuina’s early ambition, though she later acknowledges his potential and supports his right to wield Shusui and Enma. 92 183 528 534
- Monkey D. Garp — Adoptive father figure who is notably indulgent toward Kuina and treats her more gently than his grandsons. 114 185
- Nami — Close friend since childhood. Kuina recognized Nami’s determination and maintained correspondence with her even after Nami became a pirate. 128 129 182
- Tashigi — Look-alike Marine sister-in-arms and junior. Kuina requested Wright’s help for Tashigi’s training, and the two later fought together against Baroque Works agents. 225 250
- Cavendish — Opponent in the Rommel Kingdom incident. Kuina investigated White Horse’s attacks, defeated Cavendish’s violent alter ego, and arrested his entourage. 242 243
- Onimaru — Retainer of the Shimotsuki family in Ringo. He recognizes Kuina as a descendant of the Shimotsuki line and supports her decisions regarding Shusui. 528
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rommel Kingdom and Alabasta
Assigned by Colonel T-Bone to investigate “Rommel’s Kamaitachi,” Kuina battled White Horse, exposed him as Cavendish’s alternate persona, and broke through in her One-Sword Style. 242 243
She later intercepted Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger with Tashigi. Kuina’s Iron Cutting attack defeated Mr. 1, proving that his Blade Human body was not invulnerable to a true swordsman. 249 250
Straw Hat Pursuit
As a Commodore in Loguetown, Kuina attempted to prevent Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji from setting sail. Her Float-Float Fruit mobility and Severing Wind and Cloud forced Zoro to defend, but Dragon stopped her pursuit. 331
She continued to regard the Straw Hats as a Marine responsibility, intercepting them again near Dressrosa from the Flying Sky. Her aerial position and Storm Flash defense withstood the crew’s coordinated response. 463 464
Wano Country
In Wano, Kuina reconnected with Onimaru and confronted her Shimotsuki heritage. She chose not to contest Zoro’s possession of Shusui, placing Wano’s larger cause above her personal connection to the sword. 528
She later appeared before the Straw Hats as Vice Admiral “Flying Sky” Kuina, having resolved the Shusui issue. Rather than fight Zoro, she gave him Enma and warned that the sword could kill him if he lacked the strength to master it. 534
