Background

More than two decades before the final battle in Wano, Kaido invaded the country and joined forces with Kurozumi Orochi. Their rule turned Wano into a major weapons-production and export center, spreading conflict far beyond its borders. Kozuki Oden wounded Kaido badly enough to leave the X-shaped scar on his right abdomen, but Kaido ultimately used trickery in Oden’s execution. 172 410 430

Kaido developed a reputation for surviving repeated Marine captures and execution attempts without injury. He embraced that invulnerability as part of his identity, seeking opponents capable of killing him while dismissing weaker foes as beneath his interest. 172

Appearance

Kaido is an immense, heavily built man whose human appearance is deliberately demonic. He also possesses a gigantic Azure Dragon transformation.

Personality

Kaido is battle-hungry, drunken, and contemptuous of weakness. His attack on Newcastle Island began from boredom and frustration that the Marines confronting him could not kill him. He is willing to recognize capable enemies, however; Wright’s ability to wound him made Kaido sober up and take the Marine seriously. 170 171

Despite his image as a reckless brute, Kaido is pragmatic and calculating. He abandoned Doflamingo once the broker became expendable, cultivated Drake as a replacement for the fallen Jack, investigated the Marines’ rapid-deployment capability, and pursued intelligence concerning the Road Poneglyph. When overwhelmed in Wano, he chose survival over pride and attempted to flee so he could rebuild his forces later. 239 418 504 547

Kaido is also cruel toward subordinates and family alike. He placed explosive handcuffs on his daughter Yamato and intended for them to kill her if she tried to escape his control. 546

Newcastle Island Incident

Kaido massacred Marines and destroyed warships on Newcastle Island while drunk and searching for excitement. Vice Admiral Wright arrived to evacuate the surviving G-5 Marines and confronted him alone. Wright’s Holy Fire-enhanced attack wounded Kaido for the first time in more than a decade, earning Wright his recognition as a serious opponent. 170 171

After Wright used Secret Art: Conviction, Kaido was driven underground but survived, emerged in dragon form, and destroyed the island while searching for Wright. 172

Retaliation for Jack

After Wright beheaded the All-Star Jack, Kaido traveled to Kadena Island to avenge him. Wright publicly admitted responsibility and fought Kaido in a battle broadcast to Marine Headquarters. 233 236

Wright’s Execution Sentence severed Kaido’s left horn and heavily wounded his left eye. Rather than continue a costly battle he could not quickly win, Kaido withdrew, damaging his reputation as the “Strongest Creature.” 238

Rebuilding the Beasts Pirates

Following the loss of Jack and the shift in New World power after Whitebeard’s death, Kaido sought additional Devil Fruits, recruits, and military strength. He heavily cultivated Drake, whose Marine-trained tactics improved the Beasts Pirates’ organization, and eventually promoted him to All-Star. 393 410

Kaido later refused to rescue Doflamingo from Dressrosa, deeming him expendable and allowing Drake to take over parts of his business network. 418 419

Wano Country War and Death

During the Fire Festival, Kaido and Orochi gathered their forces on Onigashima, confident that the Kozuki resistance, Marco, and the Straw Hat Pirates could not threaten them. Kaido fought Marco before the Marine operation and Wano uprising fully converged. 536 538

Fleet Admiral Wright, Kuzan, and Borsalino then attacked Kaido together. Under pressure, Kaido revealed his human-beast form and attempted to move the entire Onigashima to the Flower Capital, intending to use its inhabitants as leverage against the Marines. 545 546

Severely injured and unable to withstand the three Admirals, Kaido abandoned Onigashima and fled into the sea. Wright pursued him underwater, restrained his dragon form with a Holy Storm, entered Secret Skill Holy Form, and cut off Kaido’s head with a single strike.
