Background

Xie Yue and his younger sister Hu Liena lost their parents young, retained only their names and inherited surnames, and grew up in an orphanage. They later spent roughly two years wandering the streets together. 293

The hardship of their childhood made Xie Yue intensely protective of Hu Liena. A scar beneath his distinctive eye makeup came from fighting someone who tried to grope her while they were living on the streets. 325

Mao Qi discovered the siblings because of their exceptional spirit-power potential. Xie Yue distrusted Mao Qi at first, but agreed to accompany him after Mao Qi displayed eight Spirit Rings and offered the siblings food, clothing, and treatment for their injuries. 293

Appearance

Xie Yue maintains a striking, carefully styled appearance despite his combat-oriented path.

  • Wears distinctive eye makeup. 325
  • Has a scar beneath the makeup around his eye, earned while protecting Hu Liena. 325
  • Retains a youthful appearance despite being treated as a peer by Na Du Tong’s regional leadership. 479

Personality

Xie Yue is cautious, observant, and difficult to deceive. As a child, he questioned Mao Qi’s motives rather than accepting help blindly, and he remains vigilant when confronting unknown abilities or people. 293 466 467

His strongest personal priority is protecting Hu Liena. He dislikes the attention she receives from others, leads their teams in battle, and instinctively recognizes her even through disguises and pranks. 325 511

He is intensely competitive and treats dangerous opponents as opportunities to sharpen his blade. This drive leads him to accept Na Du Tong work, seek powerful Outsiders, and challenge Zhang Zhiwei in exchange for helping Xia He control her ability. 474 486 500

Although his fighting style is built around killing intent, Xie Yue deliberately cultivates control over it. He concludes that a blade wielder must direct killing intent rather than become a puppet of it. 499

Abilities & Skills

Moon Blade Martial Soul

Xie Yue possesses the Moon Blade, a top-tier Tool Martial Soul wielded as a pair of crescent-shaped blades. His combat style combines close-range dual wielding, long-range blade control, and highly precise Soul Power manipulation. 323 325 332

  • First Spirit Skill: Slash — Further enhances the Moon Blades’ natural sharpness, allowing them to cut through defenses such as Dai Weisi’s White Tiger Barrier. 325
  • Third Spirit Skill: Break — Used with Slash to accelerate the Moon Blades from multiple angles during attacks. 332
  • Sixth Spirit Skill: Split — Enables extremely precise destructive power; Xie Yue uses it to divide a boulder into identically sized fragments. 408
  • Soul Power coating — Wraps the Moon Blades in external Soul Power to damage opponents whose bodies can ignore physical cuts. This increases his range and effective damage radius, but consumes considerable Soul Power. 389
  • Full Moon — A decisive one-strike technique powerful enough to flatten an old urban village; Gong Qing avoided it rather than taking it directly. 487
  • In the Qi-practitioner world, he demonstrates a blade capable of changing size and flying independently. 472

Demon Charm

Xie Yue and Hu Liena can combine their Moon Blade and Demon Fox Martial Souls into the Martial Soul Fusion Skill: Demon Charm. 356 357

  • Produces a red mist that blocks detection and strengthens the siblings’ mental power. 434
  • Reduces enemies’ senses, suppresses Soul Power, slows movement, and restricts vision. 357
  • Protects the siblings from Shi Nian’s illusion techniques while active. 413
  • Requires both siblings’ coordination; they can communicate mentally while fused. 357

Blade and Sword Training

Xie Yue’s technique draws from several combat traditions rather than a single school.

  • Received weapon training from an East Wolf warrior, who taught him to exploit the Moon Blade’s curved profile and prepare for blocked strikes. 323
  • Learned basic swordsmanship and blade control from Chen Xin, who became his half-master despite not formally teaching him the Seven Kill Sword’s inherited techniques. 327 332
  • Incorporated the decisiveness of Sima Jinchi’s saber methods into his own style. 332
  • Learned Distraction Control from Ning Fengzhi and attained the Six-Orifice Wishful Heart realm. 332
  • Developed Sword Intent through Qi practice and travel; meeting Feng Baobao caused his previously stagnant intent to grow again. 473

State of Mind and Resistance

Xie Yue has tempered his mind to resist techniques that manipulate desire, emotion, or killing intent.

  • Xia He’s ability to manipulate lust has no effect on him due to his still-water state of mind and unusual resistance. 486
  • Gao Ning’s emotion-influencing domain becomes a training opportunity rather than a decisive weakness. 499 500
  • He distinguishes between using killing intent as a weapon and being controlled by it. 499

Poison Bead

Xie Yue possesses a Poison Bead capable of helping restrain Chen Duo’s Gu poison. He agrees to assist Liao Zhong with Chen Duo’s condition. 483

Story Role

Heavenly Demon Sect Disciple

After awakening the Moon Blade, Xie Yue becomes one of the Heavenly Demon Sect’s foremost young combatants. He leads Hu Liena and Dugu Yan during the Star Luo Royal Academy exchange battle, directing their plan through the reflected Fox Fire and using his blades to disarm Ying Wei and force Dai Weisi’s team to surrender. 325

He later trains for two years at the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect under Chen Xin, separating from Hu Liena for the first time. His regular visits develop his weapon technique and establish his close connection with Ning Rongrong and her family. 327 332

During the siblings’ Blood Trial, Xie Yue and Hu Liena eliminate pirates and defeat their Soul Saint leader with Demon Charm, locating and destroying the weaknesses of his jellyfish Martial Soul Avatar. 355 357

Continental Advanced Spirit Master Academy Elite Tournament

Xie Yue enters the tournament as a Level 68 Spirit Emperor. When Mad Blade Academy demands that Heavenly Demon reveal its Martial Souls and levels, he accepts the challenge and defeats multiple opponents alone with controlled Moon Blade strikes. 418 419

His mentor Chen Xin checks on him after the match, reinforcing their master-disciple relationship. 419

Qi-Practitioner World

Xie Yue and Ning Rongrong are transported to a world where plants and animals contain no Spirit Power. He investigates local Qi cultivation, trades a portion of a Ginseng King for Uncle Xu’s knowledge, and learns that this world’s practitioners are not bound by Spirit Ring requirements for advancement. 466 467 483

He protects the Xu family’s village from bandits, but his unconventional blade methods frighten the villagers. Before departing, he leaves supplies and horses for the family that sheltered him. 472

Over the following years, Xie Yue and Ning Rongrong travel widely, establish the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile jewelry business, and found the Yue Clan orphanage to cultivate personnel and solve their identity problems. 473 474

Na Du Tong Service

Zhao Fangxu recruits Xie Yue into Na Du Tong by offering cultivation resources, legal identities, and commercial support for Seven Treasure Glazed Tile. Xie Yue accepts because the Company gives him access to difficult opponents and Outsider incidents. 474

As a Company director and frontline combatant, he handles threats that ordinary regional branches cannot resolve. His tendency to appear wherever trouble emerges earns him the hostile Quanxing nickname “piece of plaster.” 475 479 500

During the operation against the Medicine Immortal Association, Xie Yue assists Feng Baobao in pursuing clues to her past, ends Zhang Xilin’s suffering at his request, and helps capture the Association’s surviving members. 478 480

Quanxing and Longhu Mountain

Xie Yue is dispatched to retrieve Liu Yanyan after she runs away to Quanxing. He confronts Xia He, Lü Liang, and Gong Qing, rendering Xia He’s lust-based ability useless and driving Gong Qing to evade his Full Moon strike. 486 487

At Longhu Mountain, he uses Quanxing’s retreat and Lu Jin’s berserk state to test his own killing intent. He later offers to help Xia He control her Innate Outcast ability in exchange for a serious sparring match with Zhang Zhiwei. 500

Xie Yue and Ning Rongrong eventually face Zhang Zhiwei together. Xie Yue employs his Spirit Rings and Moon Blade Martial Soul directly, while Ning Rongrong supports him through her understanding of the Six-Storey Immortal Thief. 505

Return to Douluo Continent

After returning, Xie Yue reports his experiences to Ye Qing and hands over the Six-Storey Immortal Thief and the Origin of Qi. 509

He returns to Seven Treasure City significantly stronger, requests Chen Xin’s help in experiencing a Tool Soul Avatar battle, and reunites with Hu Liena after her own training journey. 510 511

Relationships

  • Hu Liena — Younger sister, lifelong companion, and Demon Charm fusion partner. Xie Yue’s protectiveness toward her stems from their years of hardship as orphaned street children. 293 325 357
  • Ning Rongrong — Childhood companion and fiancée. They travel together, establish the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile business and Yue Clan orphanage, and later fight Zhang Zhiwei as partners. 460 473 505
  • Chen Xin — Sword mentor and half-master. Chen Xin trained Xie Yue in foundational swordsmanship, regularly spars with him, and remains protective of Ning Rongrong’s engagement. 327 332 458
  • Ning Fengzhi — Future father-in-law and mentor in Distraction Control. He supports Xie Yue’s training while expecting him to protect Ning Rongrong. 332 461 510
  • Ye Qing — Xie Yue reports his off-world experiences and turns over the Six-Storey Immortal Thief and Origin of Qi to him. 509
  • Feng Baobao — A fellow traveler connected to Xie Yue’s Sword Intent development. He later assists her search for information about her origins. 473 478
  • Liao Zhong — Na Du Tong regional head and trusted associate who treats Xie Yue as a peer and seeks his aid in high-risk operations. 479 483
  • Xu Xiang — Son of the Xu family that sheltered Xie Yue and Ning Rongrong. Xie Yue later reunites with him after Xu Xiang becomes a Qi practitioner. 466 476

Notable Quotes

“Too slow.”
“Too weak.”
“You call that dual-wielding? My grandmother uses her scissors more skillfully than you.”
— Xie Yue to Mad Blade Academy 418

“A blade is a weapon of slaughter, and Blade Intent is the intent of killing… He was the one who wielded the blade, not a puppet of the blade.” 499

Trivia

  • Xie Yue’s orphanage was named the Yue Clan after staff rejected his preferred “Heavenly Demon” name and altered the paperwork rather than restarting the application process. 473
  • He learned to fly a plane in Hawaii, which allowed him to force-land a hijacked aircraft during an unusually disastrous trip to a Na Du Tong operation. 479
