Background / History
Gu Yuan is the patriarch of the Ancient Clan and Gu Xun Er’s father. As a peak Nine-Star Dou Sheng, he is one of the continent’s foremost experts and one of the few figures able to contend directly with Hun Tiandi. His cultivation has stagnated at the threshold of the Dou Di realm because the world lacks a necessary element for advancement. He identifies the Tuoshe Ancient Emperor Jade as essential to opening the Ancient Emperor Cave Mansion and pursuing that final realm 102 103.
He carries lingering guilt over the Xiao Clan’s decline. After recounting the Ancient Clan’s involvement in events a thousand years earlier, he seeks Wu Yong’s perspective; Wu Yong argues that alliances and promises require sufficient strength to endure, helping Gu Yuan reconcile with the past 107.
Gu Yuan first meets Wu Yong privately after observing his extraordinary spatial attainments and Heavenly Realm Great Perfection soul. Though initially wary of Wu Yong’s unusual constitution, he tests the Son of Wind’s control over ambient energy and finds that even his own command of nearby energy weakens in Wu Yong’s presence 102 103.
Recognizing Wu Yong as a force who may surpass him, Gu Yuan repeatedly attempts to bind him to the Ancient Clan through a marriage alliance with Gu Xun Er. His efforts are driven by both political necessity and his belief that the union of Xun Er’s God-grade bloodline with the Son of Wind could produce an exceptional descendant 103 116.
Appearance
Gu Yuan appears as a middle-aged man with an unremarkable, restrained bearing despite his status as a pinnacle Dou Sheng.
- His aura can be completely imperceptible, leaving only faint spatial ripples to reveal his arrival 102.
- He is described alongside Hun Tiandi as possessing an air of “returning to simplicity,” rather than an overtly imposing presence 139.
Personality
Gu Yuan is politically pragmatic, patient, and deeply conscious of the Ancient Clan’s long-term survival. He believes that a rising power such as Wu Yong cannot safely be ignored: if the Ancient Clan cannot suppress him, it must win him over before another faction does 116.
Despite his immense strength, he can be magnanimous toward talent. He accepts Wu Yong’s blunt arguments about the Xiao Clan, shares high-level cultivation experience freely, and promises assistance when needed 107 108 127.
His composure falters most visibly over Gu Xun Er’s relationship troubles. He views her attachment to Xiao Yan as a dangerous distraction before the war with the Hun Clan and prioritizes securing Wu Yong’s trust and support for the Ancient Clan 144.
