Chapter One: Going Home
A dark red moon hung low above the city's dense skyscrapers, almost filling half the sky.
A dark circular train, its body mottled with rust, sped through the entire city beneath the Red Moon's gaze. Inside, passengers in all kinds of clothing read newspapers or dozed beneath the dim lights.
"Ding, Moon Platform Station has arrived!"
Lu Xin startled awake from his nap, picked up his bag, and flowed out of the carriage with the surging crowd.
Carrying his bag, he walked up the filthy, dilapidated stairs and across the newspaper-covered platform, reaching the city's surface. Looking up, the glow of the neon lights gave the streets and crowds a bizarre kaleidoscopic feel. Yet no matter how colorful the streets were, the Red Moon hanging above the city still represented the world's underlying hue.
Ever since the Red Moon Incident thirty years ago, the whole world had remained like this.
Of course, Lu Xin did not know what was different about it. He had been born after the Red Moon Incident, and the world had always been this way.
With his bag on his back, he crossed an alley that had just been washed by rain and entered a shabby old building. The elevator was broken again, so he could only take the stairs. Slowly, he reached Room 401 on the fourth floor, took out his key, and opened the heavy door.
The corridor was silent and chilling, but the apartment was warm and gentle.
In the kitchen, Father was stewing meat. Steam burbled from the pressure cooker, carrying an enticing aroma of meat.
His younger sister lay sprawled on the sofa, hugging snacks as she watched a very old cartoon, SpongeBob.
