Appearance
Jiang Buchen usually presents himself in deliberately unkempt, loose-fitting clothing, with half-lidded eyes and an air of someone perpetually on the verge of sleep. His appearance contrasts sharply with the force of his true-word techniques. 66 67
- Wears loose black robes or dark-patterned purple official robes. 66 120
- Keeps his hair loose and disheveled, often falling to his shoulders. 66 120
- Frequently leaves his sleeves rolled above the elbows. 66
- Has half-open, sleepy-looking eyes that become focused when facing danger. 66 80
- Has also worn a Gold-Woven Cloak bearing a Fierce Tiger Treading Evil pattern. 67
Personality
Jiang Buchen is lazy, sleep-loving, and openly impatient with needless work. Shen Mo specifically notes that waking him at the wrong time can ruin any chance of a reasonable conversation. He initially accepts assignments only when they can be handled with minimal inconvenience. 67
Beneath this indolence is a highly capable and observant demon slayer. He rapidly identifies suspicious behavior, tracks supernatural traces, and reads battlefield conditions accurately. He is especially suited to immobilizing opponents so that Lu Yuan can finish them. 80 120 183
He dislikes people who exploit loopholes, obstruct official business, or show disrespect toward the Demon Suppression Bureau. When provoked, his casual manner gives way to cold, severe authority. 138 184 198
Abilities & Skills
Nine Character Mantra
Jiang Buchen's principal art is the Nine Character Mantra, expressed through golden true words. Shen Mo describes his use of its suppressive and killing aspects as increasingly masterful. 67
- Lin / Approach Mantra — creates invisible suppressive force that immobilizes targets, including Mystic Realm demons and enemy talismans. 66 79 200
- Dou Character Technique: Breaking the Eight Desolations — releases destructive power inside a target or manifests as a powerful golden fist seal. 67 90 198
- Jie Character Technique: Embracing the Mysterious Yellow — enhances his cultivation and can be combined with Dou for stronger attacks. 154 200
- Movement Mantra — grants extreme mobility, allowing him to travel vast distances in a single stride. 80
- Formation Mantra — seals streets, traps enemies in golden formations, binds groups with true-word chains, and can open pre-existing formations. 79 128 166
- Zhe Character Mantra — can control a demon's body; he used it in coordination with Lu Yuan against the Frost Wolf King. 76 82
Limits
- His Approach Mantra could hold the Transformation Realm Frost Wolf King for only about one breath. 80
- Sustained suppression of the Frost Wolf King nearly exhausted his Spirit Power. 82
- The Nine Character Mantra is not suited to prolonged, continuous combat against endlessly emerging enemies. 219
Truth-Word Suppression
Jiang Buchen can speak or invoke individual true words to halt, pin down, or restrain enemies with minimal movement. He casually froze a Mystic Realm Spotted Leopard Demon while still seated and half-asleep. 79
- Immobilized peak Mystic Realm sword cultivator Xin Jiu in midair with the word “Descend.” 90
- Restrained Vast Wave Sect disciples through the pressure of his aura. 142
- Pinned an escaping Mystic Purity Temple disciple face-first into the ground. 190
- Bound more than a dozen cultists and their weapons into a single bundle with Lin and Formation. 196
Tracking and Investigation
Jiang Buchen is skilled at identifying irregularities and pursuing targets through spiritual means. 120 183
- Noticed that clerk Sun Qi deliberately avoided populated streets and followed him using a tracking talisman. 120
- Attached golden true-word light to black qi extracted from a demon, allowing him to track it directly to Pale Fang Mountain. 183
- Recognized an illusion array concealed within the Iron Sword Sect's hidden stone-wall entrance. 221
- Identified the significance of the Nine-Molt Golden Cicada's transformation process. 128
Combat Prowess
Though best known for mantra arts, Jiang Buchen is physically formidable and can defeat strong opponents after suppressing them with true words. 67 90
- Killed a Mystic Realm Ape Demon in two breaths using suppression followed by the Dou Character Technique. 66 67
- Defeated peak Mystic Realm sword cultivator Xin Jiu, then rendered him unconscious with internal destructive force. 90

- Captured fleeing Longevity Cultists, including two Transformation Realm warriors, at Jade Peak Mountain. 217
Equipment / Items
- Gold-Woven Cloak — embroidered with a Fierce Tiger Treading Evil pattern. 67

- Azure Sky Parasite Ginseng — two stalks aided his advancement to the second layer of the Transformation Realm. 182
- Spirit Vein Core — received from Lu Yuan to support further cultivation; Jiang expects it to secure advancement to the fourth layer, with the fifth potentially attainable. 232

Story Role / Major Arcs
Linchuan Demon Calamity
Sent by Shen Mo as Prefecture Bureau reinforcement, Jiang Buchen travels to Linchuan amid the clash of Corpse Malevolence and Yin-Yang chaos. He suppresses and kills demons along the way, including an Iron-Feather Eagle he uses for transport. 67 76
At Old Street, he kills four Mystic Realm demons, seals the street with the Formation Mantra, and leaves lesser demons to the White Moon Villa disciples while he sleeps. 79
He then joins Lu Yuan against the Transformation Realm Frost Wolf King. Jiang repeatedly times his true words to stop the Wolf King's counterattacks, allowing Lu Yuan to land the killing strike; the effort drains nearly all of Jiang's Spirit Power. 80 82
Cangwu Sword Pavilion Conflict
Jiang Buchen assists Lu Yuan during the assassination attempt involving Ding Shiqi and Xin Jiu. When Xin Jiu attempts to take him hostage, Jiang immobilizes and defeats the peak Mystic Realm sword cultivator with ease. 90
When Lu Yuan leaves Linchuan to seek Prefecture Bureau support, he entrusts the city's affairs in part to Jiang, recognizing that Jiang will act when circumstances become critical. 93
Southwestern Counties Demon Suppression
After reaching the Transformation Realm, Jiang receives a commander's title and is sent to aid Lu Yuan across the three southwestern counties. 119 120

Jiang later accompanies Lu Yuan to Vajra Gate, where he helps expose Shi Yanchu's false Void Realm facade by testing the strength behind the monk's Buddhist seal. 153 154
Pale Fang Mountain and Mystic Purity Temple
Jiang investigates the Pale Fang Mountain Ancient Tomb with Lu Yuan and helps trace black qi back to the site. He identifies the threat posed by the tomb's sealed yin energies and helps manage the Mystic Purity Temple disciples who obstruct the Bureau. 182 183 190
He forces the detained disciples to clear the dangerous tomb passage as punishment, then theorizes that the purple-robed corpse beneath the mountain may have been a former Mystic Purity Temple Celestial Master. 191
When Mystic Purity Temple reinforcements arrive, Jiang defeats Zhou Yuanqing and Meng Shoujing's talisman attacks, helps seal every escape route, and ensures the group cannot flee down the mountain. 198 200
Longevity Cult Cleanup
During the Clear Stream operation against the Ten Thousand Parasites Sect and Longevity Cult, Jiang captures multiple Mystic Realm enemies in a true-word formation and incapacitates numerous lower-level cultists. 166 167
At Jade Peak Mountain, he captures fleeing Longevity Cult remnants at the cliff, including two Transformation Realm warriors. 217
Left Ridge Investigations
Assigned to remain in Left Ridge and close out hidden demon dens across the southwestern counties, Jiang accompanies Lu Yuan to investigate the Iron Sword Sect and the Bone Demon Patriarch. 219 222
He recognizes the illusion array leading into the Bone Grotto, holds back bone demons during the conflict, and later guards Qingyao Mountain's exits while Lu Yuan hunts the Bat Demon. 221 224 230
